Animal Crossing Redd Guide: How to Get Redd to Show Up, Buy Art

Getting Redd to Visit and Upgrading the Museum

The first thing you’ll need to do is download the Animal Crossing 1.12 update if you haven’t already. Then, fire up New Horizons and head to your museum (depending on where it’s located, you may or may not encounter another new face on the way).

Speak to Blathers, and he’ll let you know he’s expanding the Museum to include an art gallery. He mentions it’s due to your hard work and donations, but it doesn’t seem like there’s any kind of donation requirement to meet for Blathers to expand the Museum.

After that, you’ll have to wait at least one day. Time travelers are reporting Redd’s Trawler stops by the day after Blathers tells you about the gallery, but some others say it’s random.

We’ll update when we know for sure, but either way, Isabelle will let you know in the announcements that a suspicious character is wandering around the island.

That’s Redd. Find him and chat with him to get your first piece of art, which you can then take to Blathers. It’s guaranteed to be legitimate, and it kicks off the Museum’s big expansion as advertised in the 1.12 update trailer.

Blathers will close the Museum the next day for renovations, and the day after that, Redd comes back to town. Isabelle won’t announce him, but he’ll be wandering around town like before. Chat him up, and he’ll eventually bring you back to the Treasure Trawler.

Buying Art from Redd

After the first visit, Redd will routinely come around like all the other tourist NPCs. Unlike other NPCs, though, he visits via boat, and it’ll dock just offshore near your secret beach.

Head on board with Bells in hand, and you’ll get the option to purchase some artwork of suspect origins from the wily fox.

Series veterans already know this, but a good chunk of what you get off Redd is counterfeit. There is a way to tell the difference between a fake and real piece of art, though, as the fake art always has something wrong with it — coffee stains, add-ons like a towel, discolorations, and so on.

Needless to say, you can’t donate fake art, so it’s best to try and make sure you get the genuine article.

That’s all you need to know about getting Redd to show up in ACNH and how to buy art from Redd. Be sure to check out our Animal Crossing: New Horizons guide collection for more tips, including:
