Baldur’s Gate 3: How to Defeat the Observer Beholder in Underdark

Take out this creature and its previously petrified minions in Baldur's Gate 3.

You’ll want to know how to beat the Observer Beholder in Baldur’s Gate 3. This creature is one of the most iconic in the Dungeons & Dragons bestiary, the infamous floating eye with tentacles. It can also take out your entire party if you’re not careful. Here’s how to seek it out and beat it.

How to Beat the Observer Beholder in Baldur’s Gate 3

The Observer Beholder can be found in the eastern portion of the Underdark region (X:119; Y-246). This area has several ledges along a cliffside. Upon reaching the top, a short cutscene will trigger, during which your character notices several “statues.”

Well, these aren’t actually statues — they’re people that have been petrified by the Observer. It will then spawn and attack your group. Likewise, it can remove the petrification of the soldiers, which means you’d have more enemies to deal with.

Taking Out the Observer Beholder and Its Minions

The biggest problem with this encounter is your team’s positioning. Because everyone is climbing ledges, there’s a chance that some of your party members are still below you when the battle commences. As such, I suggest keeping a manual save beforehand. In my case, I made sure that my characters were fairly close to each other, just as I leapt to the top of the cliffside area to trigger the cutscene.

I also advise you to bring Glut, a Myconid follower, with you. You can find him in the Myconid Colony, and he wants revenge against the Duergar. The Duergar are in the middle of the Underdark region and, if you eliminate them first, Glut will gain additional abilities.

One of Glut’s new abilities is called Haste Spores, which grants your allies increased movement range and an additional action if they pass through the affected area. I was able to take out the Observer and its minions in just a couple of turns, thanks to bonus actions and increased mobility.

Observer Beholder Rewards

After killing the creature and its minions, you can pick up The Spectator’s Eyes, which grants the Ray of Fear and Wounding Ray spells. Also, one of the drow victims, Dhourn, might not be hostile during the fight (i.e. his petrification wasn’t removed by the creature). However, he will still attack you after a chat.

Dhourn drops a Memory Shard, as well as the Icy Helve. The Icy Helve is one of three materials required to craft the Mourning Frost.

That’s how to beat the Observer Beholder in Baldur’s Gate 3. There are still a lot of things to do in the Underdark, such as dealing with the Glut vs. Spaw debacle. For more tips and tactics, visit our BG3 guides hub.
