Destiny 2 Undercurrent Guide: How to Get the Grenade Launcher and God Rolls

A new weapon comes to Destiny 2: a wave frame grenade launcher called the Undercurrent.

The Undercurrent is one of the newest weapons to enter the loot pool in Destiny 2, and it might be a godsend for players who don’t Raid or play other endgame activities. It’s also easy to get it, though getting the god roll might take some time.

As with any Vanguard-specific weapon, there are two ways to get the Undercurrent: it drops as a Nightfall completion reward and can also be gotten by focusing Vanguard Engrams at Zavala.

Nightfall Strikes will net you your first Undercurrent Grenade Launcher. Every difficult of Nightfall has a chance of rewarding one, but the harder they are, the more likely you’ll get what you want. If you have a team that can do Grandmater Nightfalls, or you wish to brave the Fireteam Finder LFG, you can get the Adept version, which can take Adept mods, better versions of base mods with different or improved effects.

Focusing Vanguard Engrams at Zavala is another way to get Undercurrent. Once you’ve received one Undercurrent, its data is added to your Collections. You can talk to Zavala and spend five Vanguard Engrams and 25,000 Glimmer in his Focused Decoding menu to roll a regular one for a chance at better perks. If you happen to have the Adept variant, you can spend that amount plus 10 Nightfall Cipher (Adept) for a chance at a better one of those.

Best PvE God Roll for the Undercurrent in Destiny 2

  • Launcher Barrel: Quick Launch
  • Magazine: High-Velocity Rounds
  • Trait 1: Ambitious Assassin
  • Trait 2: One for All

As a Wave Frame weapon, the Undercurrent is better suited to PvE activities than it is for PvP. With the above roll, you can keep the weapon up and killing with very little effort. Ambitious Assasin can overflow the Undercurrent’s magazine with up to two shells so long as you get a few kills with the last one in the barrel. And if you’re using One for All, hitting multiple opponents ups the weapon’s damage by a solid 35%. The Barrel and Magazine perks ensure the projectile reaches its destination as fast as possible.

  • Launcher Barrel: Quick Launch
  • Magazine: High-Velocity Rounds
  • Trait 1: Demolitionist
  • Trait 2: Adrenaline Junkie

Sadly, the Undercurrent doesn’t have a fantastic PvP perk pool, but with this roll, you’re feeding into Shaxx’s favorite thing: throwing grenades. Shoot a single round from the Undercurrent but don’t reload. Instead, throw your Grenade ability at an enemy, then instantly follow it up with the second round from Undercurrent. The combo might not be the most effective thing in the world, nor will it win you many friends, but it is fairly effective.

And that’s how you get the Undercurrent Grenade Launcher, as well as the rolls you want for it in Destiny 2. For more content on the game, such as how to get the Wishkeeper Bow or my list of the best craftable weapons in 2023, click the links or check out our D2 guides hub.
