Difference Between Affinity & Romance in Dragon’s Dogma 2

One of the biggest changes that happened in Dragon’s Dogma 2 from the first game is that the Affinity and Romance systems are now separate. This means that you don’t need to give gifts to an NPC to make them fall in love with you. All you need to do is complete their specific romance quests without giving them gifts.

Of course, you can give gifts in Dragon’s Dogma 2, which will raise the level of your Affinity towards the chosen NPC. As a result, you’ll be rewarded with the following benefits:

  • The NPCs will give you various gifts, including Tomes and other valuable items.
  • You’ll see surprise packages with items inside appear at your home in Vernworth.
  • If you raise Affinity with the shopkeepers, they’ll give you discounts.

I discovered that the Affinity levels can be checked in your Adventure Logbook. But if I really need to know if the NPC really likes me, all I need to do is grab them. If they stay in my arms, it means they like my character. But if they try to break free, it means that I need to give them some more gifts. This is the main difference between Affinity and Romance systems in Dragon’s Dogma 2.

How to Romance NPCs in Dragon’s Dogma 2

Now that we’ve got that out of the way, it’s time to look at how the Romance system actually works in Dragon’s Dogma 2. As I already mentioned, to romance an NPC in the game, all you need to do is simply complete their romance quests. In this case, there are only two options for now:

  • Wilhelmina at Rose Chateau Borderlie, Vernworth.
  • Ulrika at Harve Village.

How to Romance Wilhelmina

The entire romance with Wilhelmina will take you on a journey through three different quests that are all interconnected. Here, I provide you with step-by-step instructions on how to do them properly:

  1. Acquire and equip a Courtly Attire and the Eventide Mask.
  2. Go to the masquerade ball at Vernworth Castle.
  3. Complete “The Stolen Throne” quest by letting Whilhelmina help you hide from the guards.
  4. Speak to Captain Brant at Stardrop Inn and ask him about the masquerade.
  5. Complete “An Unsettling Encounter” quest by obtaining the Battahli-Crested letter at the Allard’s Chambers in Vernworth Castle.
  6. You need to jump out of the castle window to meet Wilhelmina at the Courtyard.
  7. Start the romance quest “Every Rose Has Its Thorns” at the Rose Chateau Borderlie.
  8. Find evidence against Allard and take revenge on him.
  9. Go back to Wilhelmina to trigger the romance cutscene.

How to Romance Ulrika

Ulrika’s romance is a bit more complicated, involving a long chain of events. The entire line includes four different quests that will not only allow you to romance Ulrika but also collect significant loot. Here’s how I’d go about romancing Ulrika in Dragon’s Dogma 2:

  1. Complete any of Captain Brand’s quests and go back to Melve.
  2. Initiate a new quest, “Readvent of Calamity,” and fend off the dragon attack.
  3. After speaking to Ulrika and accepting her gratitude, go back to her house in Melve the next day.
  4. When she offers you to spend a night at her house, agree to it.
  5. The next morning, they set out to find Ulrika, who disappeared, at the Harve Village, which unlocks after completing the “Scaly Invaders” quest after exiting Stormwind Cave.
  6. Once you speak to Ulrika at the Harve Village, go back there in a few days.
  7. Complete the “Trouble on the Cape” quest by helping Ulrika save a man from the Stormwind Cave.
  8. Return to Melve by giving the guard 5,000 G to initiate the “Home is Where the Hearth Is” romance quest.
  9. Speak to Lennart at Ulrika’s house and give him four swords from your inventory.
  10. After the quest is done, speak to Ulrika at the pier of the Harve Village to trigger the romance cutscene.
