Dredge: The Pale Reach DLC — How to Get the Icebreaker Pieces

You need the Icebreaker to explore the iceberg in Dredge: The Pale Reach.

When you first discover The Pale Reach area, you’ll find a giant iceberg with seemingly no way to explore it. However, the traveling merchant can outfit your hull with a way to push further. This is how to get the Icebreaker Pieces in Dredge: The Pale Reach.

Where to Find the Icebreaker Pieces in The Pale Reach

The first location you’ll come across is the Bleak Pontoon, manned by the Traveling Merchant. It’s set up next to an old shack, and exploring it reveals a set of plans for an Icebreaker. Much like the name suggests, this modification allows you to drive through the chunks of ice blocking you from exploring the new area fully.

There are three parts you need to find to construct the Icebreaker. None of these will be found by cruising around the exterior of the iceberg. Thankfully, you’ll find an unexpected ally to get you into the core of the glacier.

How to Find the Photographer

The Traveling Merchant isn’t the only one who wandered down to the floe when it appeared. The Photographer also bundled up against the chill to snag pictures of a legendary Narwhal. This is how to find her:

  • From the Bleak Pontoon, head to the right and into the glacier.
  • Stay to the right path.
  • Head left where you’ll find a random boat.

She’s set up a makeshift feeding platform to attract the Narwhal. Fill it with fish and then wait for it to show. This creature, very unlike the Narwhal’s we’re accustomed to, crashes through the barrier as it feeds on the offering. While frightening, this opens the way to a significant portion of the iceberg’s interior.

Icebreaker Piece Locations

With more area to chug through, you can finally find the Icebreaker parts. The general areas where you’ll find the necessary items are circled in the map below. If you don’t have the map yet, this is how to get it.

  • Icebreaker Plow Half: Found at the Central Camp
    • Takes up five spaces in an S shape
  • Icebreaker Plow Half: Found at the Western Bearing
    • Takes up five spaces in a Z shape
  • Icebreaker Bracing: Found at the Eastern Terminus
    • Takes up four spaces in a square

Each of the pieces is signified by the same glowing yellow marker that other important items have had. You’ll need to feed the Narwhal at two more barriers, one to the west and one to the east, to reach all the areas.

Once you have acquired the three parts, head back to the Traveling Merchant. She’ll install the Icebreaker for free, and mentions she can take it off at any time at any of her Pontoons. Now you can travel freely throughout the whole Pale Reach area without worrying about smashing your hull into an ice field.

That’s how to get the Icebreaker Pieces in Dredge: The Pale Reach DLC. For more on the expansion, check out our extensive coverage in our guide hub. You don’t need to feed the hungry Narwhal to gain entry here.
