How to Make a Big Chest in Stardew Valley 1.6

Give yourself more room to store items by upgrading your chests to Big Chests.

It’s essential to have plenty of storage space in Stardew Valley for all the resources and gear you’ll need along the way. However, those regular chests don’t always cut it, so here’s how to make a Big Chest in Stardew Valley 1.6 update.

How to Get a Big Chest in Stardew Valley

You can build a regular chest at the very start of the game using 50 Wood in your Crafting menu. These chests hold up to 36 items and have color options, but if you’re looking for storage with more slots, you’ll want the Big Chest.

You can purchase a crafting recipe for a Big Chest at Robin’s Carpenter store. She is open from 9 to 5 every day except Tuesdays, but she closes early on Fridays. The recipe costs 5,000 Gold. If you’re just starting, it may take a few days to sell crops and fish to save up. If you’re trying out the new Meadowlands farm, I found that you can make some quick money selling eggs daily.

The Wood Chest holds up to 70 items at a time, nearly double that of a regular chest. However, with the size also comes a slightly more costly crafting recipe. To make it, you’ll need the following ingredients:

  • Wood x120
  • Copper Bar x2

How to Replace a Chest with a Big Chest

After you’ve unlocked the crafting recipe and gathered the materials needed, you can start making your new storage. The great thing is that you can quickly switch out your old chests with the Big Chests. You won’t even have to move any items around.

To replace a chest with a Big Chest, select the Big Chest in your item slots and approach the other chest that has already been placed. Hover your cursor over the other chest, then place the Big Chest on top. This will put the Big Chest down in its place, keeping all the items inside it. Plus, the chest that was there before will drop so you can pick it up.

The Big Chests are perfect for fitting all your essential items inside, especially when there is such a large variety of items you want to keep organized together. I love that you can quickly place these bigger store chests down on ones you already have set up. It saves time rather than reorganizing everything you’ve already worked so hard on. If you haven’t already, take a trip to Robin’s to pick up that recipe!
