Making a book in Minecraft is nowhere near as complicated as making a potion or getting the best enchantments on your favorite tools. The short and simple steps to make a book are as follows:

  • Have 3 paper
  • Have 1 leather
  • Combine them at a Crafting Table

Doing these 3 things will net you one book. Simple enough when it comes to making one but books are a common item that have vast uses. To really get the most out of books, you’ll want to craft many at a time.

How to Farm Books

Farming books requires a lot of paper and leather, as you might have guessed. You’re going to be spending some time gathering the materials for paper, as well as grinding mobs for leather.

3 sugarcane can be used to create 3 pieces of paper. The best way to expedite this process is to make a sugarcane farm. This is possible by planting sugarcane right next to a water source. You can do this near your home or base to generate endless sugarcane stalks and reap the reward of endless paper and sugar.

How to Farm Leather in Minecraft

Leather is usually earned from killing cows and horses. Killing one of these animals drops one or two pieces of leather at a time. That said, I found it easier to build a farm filled with cows to supply all my leather needs. Simply build a pen for them, and lead a couple cows to your pen using wheat.

You can then feed the two adult cows wheat so that they mate and produce a calf that will mature. Complete the process until you have many adult cows, then slaughter them as needed for beef and leather. It is important to know that killing calves doesn’t produce much of anything so don’t waste them.

If you followed how to farm both of the main resources of books you can start mass producing books so lets get into the practicality.

How to Use Books

Books have many uses in Minecraft, the most important being the creation of an enchanting table. To craft an enchanting table, you’ll need:

  • 1 book
  • 2 diamonds
  • 4 obsidian

After making it, you can then use Lapis Lazuli to enchant books and items with various enchantments.

Books can also be used to make bookshelves, which require 3 books and 6 pieces of wood. You can even get better enchantments if you build a library around your enchanting table. Just remember enchantments take EXP to craft, with stronger ones requirement more enchantments.

On top of that, you can use 1 book, 1 ink sac, and 1 feather to create a book and quill. This item can be used to rewrite books that have already been written. Basically copying books that have already been enchanted. You can also write in books literally with up to 100 pages of free space.

The use and practicality of books is massive so making them is a core part of gameplay in Minecraft. If you’re looking for more information on Minecraft and crafting check out our other Minecraft guides.
