Mortal Kombat 1: How to Unlock Brutalities

Brutalities are locked for each character in Mortal Kombat 1. Here's how to find them.

Mortal Kombat 1 is just as gruesome as its predecessors, but that’s not limited to just the fatalities. Each fighter also has its own set of ghastly finishers. It’s not inherently obvious how to gain access to them, though. This is how to unlock brutalities in Mortal Kombat 1.

Aside from the universal brutality that every character has access to (The Klassic), each also has multiple brutal finishers that are tied to their Fighter Mastery ranks. Leveling up Fighter Mastery ranks is the only way to unlock Mortal Kombat 1 brutalities.

How to Increase Character Ranks in MK1

You’ll need to keep playing with each individual character to increase their ranks. Although it won’t increase from playing them in the campaign, it will from the character towers and online play.

If you’re looking to bring those levels up quickly in MK1, I definitely recommend grinding through Invasions mode. The fights are only one round, and they’re relatively easy due to their reliance on gimmicks for difficulty. It’s also a bit more enjoyable than mindlessly grinding CPU fights in Towers.

How to Check Fighter Mastery

To access Fighter Mastery, you’ll need to be at the main menu or in the Invasions mode. While at either one, press the View button on an Xbox controller or the Touch Pad on a PlayStation controller to view your daily and weekly quests. Then press RB or R1 to move over to the Mastery tab.

From this page, you can view the MK1 Mastery Ranks for each fighter and the Kameos. The former go up to 35 while the latter go up to 15. You can only view the rank rewards for every five levels, although that’s more than enough to see if there’s a brutality you can unlock soon.

That’s how to unlock brutalities in Mortal Kombat 1. For a look at some other finishers, check out our MK1 Fatalities list. Even more kontent can be found within our MK1 guides hub.
