God of War: Ascension Review

Sometimes it's better to end early, rather than try and force an encore.

Kratos, the lone Spartan with an attitude problem, has already become a god, ascended Olympus in a crazy war, and given humanity hope at the cost of personal sacrifice. So what's next for him? An unnecessary prequel story with a hard as nails, but well-designed, multiplayer mode. See all the gory gameplay above and learn the details of why God of War: Ascension is worth considering, but also why you should stay wary of it.

Game: God of War: Ascension
Platforms: PS3 (Reviewed), PS Now
Price: $7.99 to $19.99
Rating: 6/10

The game reviewed was acquired via a PSN card gifted to me by my friend Robert, who is totally awesome!

I had a feeling this was happening with this game... never picked it up even as a massive GoW fan because I had a feeling it would be... a bit broken.

The sad thing is, it never -had- to be. It could have turned out just fine if they'd shrunk down the campaign and eased players into he MP. It's just a shame it will remain this obscure offshoot of the franchise instead of its own thing.

Or not even tried MP... and just done a robust SP. I don't think Santa Monica are the team to try MP stuff... their strength is SP.
Even if the MP seams fun (and with my brief time with it, it was).

No, I would never say a dev shouldn't try MP. It is a worthwhile thing to try. Experimentation is good. There was no need for another SP GOW game on PS3. You can play literally every entry on PS3 ATM. Which is why I sincerely think Ascension needed to be a MP-only, F2P title.

Who's stopping them from adding it in as free DLC later? Make a solid SP or spend time making a solid MP. But I think a GoW game wouldn't sell past 5 copies if it was MP only (or get more than 15 downloads if F2P).

Because making it a DLC or patch content would require anywhere between five to fifteen gigs of space, depending on the game. There's a reason Halo: MCC tried to include as many MP playlists -on disc- as possible.

The general response and amount of people still playing the MP would say your thinking might be a little off.

Maybe... but that may be because there is the SP as well. I dunno... was just a thought.
