Final Fantasy 16 has no turn-based elements, Producer Naoki Yoshida said in a recent interview on Tokyo’s One Morning radio show (translated by Gematsu). Yoshida also said the newest Final Fantasy features a different kind of narrative that reflects its audience’s age.

Like its numerical predecessor, Final Fantasy 16 swaps turn-based combat for a real-time action system. However, Yoshida plans a robust support system for those less familiar with, or less fond of, real-time battles and just want to focus on the story.

He didn’t elaborate much on Final Fantasy 16′s support options but said the system will help make it a “smooth and enjoyable” experience for everyone.

It seems Yoshida and the development team are shifting Final Fantasy 16‘s story away from Final Fantasy 15‘s lighthearted cars-and-noodles adventure in favor of something a bit darker and more considered. Yoshida said he understands that many Final Fantasy fans have grown up with the series and developed a different worldview, something he wants to reflect by balancing the “good and bad” of life in Final Fantasy 16‘s story.

He said:

I believe there are certain hardships that are experienced when becoming an adult, so I want to make the main theme of this game something that those who grew up playing Final Fantasy and understand reality can still enjoy, get something out of, and think about.

Final Fantasy 16 will release on PlayStation 5 at a still-undetermined date. While details are scarce, Square Enix did provide an overview of Final Fantasy 16‘s characters and world. Meanwhile, Yoshida’s other Final Fantasy project, Final Fantasy XIV, is gearing up for the brand-new story expansion Endwalkers later in 2021.
