Cult of the Mothman

Pre-war there were rumors of a large moth/man hybrid in the wilds of West Virginia. Word of this spread and soon there was a small following of the mysterious creature. Though no scientific research was done into the sighting, there was enough interest to build a museum to the Mothman in Point Pleasant.

Originally thought to be a myth, documents and relics left from pre-war have fanatics and cultists gained popularity, leading to the creation of the Cult of the Mothman. Since its inception, there have been two main sects to branch off from the original cult. Followers of the Winged One worship the red-eyed Mothman, while the Enlightened worship the purple-eyed Wise Mothman.

Fallout 76 Mothman Locations

Mothman is a random encounter in Fallout 76, but there are a few locations and ways to catch a glimpse of him. You will need to inspect these areas at night, as it does not spawn during the day.

Mothman, Stalking Mothman, Vengeful Mothman, Glowing Mothman Locations

  • Cultist Daily Ops will guarantee a Mothman spawn, along with Mothman Hatchlings
  • Whitespring Resort near road 83A
  • Kanawha County Cemetery church
  • Moth-Home
  • Blake’s Offering
  • Outside Lucky Hole Mine
  • Ingram Mansion
  • Johnson’s Acre
  • Point Pleasant
  • Clancy Manor

Wise Mothman

  • You can see the non-hostile, purple eyed Wise Mothman in the Landview Lighthouse during “The Path to Enlightenment”. This event can be done during the day as it is not effected by the time requirement.
  • During the Seasonal Event “The Mothman Equinox” you can encounter the Wise Mothman around Point Pleasant

Scorched Mothman

  • Enclave Research Facility
  • Can randomly spawn during Scorched Earth event if occurs at night

Mothman Weaknesses

If you encounter a normal Mothman, it is possible that it will simply disappear in a puff of black smoke (the same as the Smiling Man). The Stalking, Vengeful and Scorched variants are aggressive and will attack you.

Mothman attacks using sonic waves sent out from their wings or by vocalizing. They will also fly high into the sky or disappear only to reappear in another location in an attempt to confuse you.

Sneaking up and attacking with stealth bonuses is a good way to get an advantage. If you sneak during the combat, however, Mothman may just despawn.

Mothman Egg Locations

Mothman Eggs are an item that can be found around certain Cult of the Mothman locations. While they can fill your hunger somewhat, using them to craft other foods would be less risky as they have a high disease chance, as well as radiation.

  • Clancy Manor
  • Enclave Research Facility
  • Ingram Mission
  • Kanawha County Cemetery
  • Moth-Home
  • Sacrament
  • Point Pleasant
  • As a reward from Cultist High Priest Packs, dropped from high priests during “The Mothman Equinox” seasonal event.

Mothman Eggs caught in a blast zone will turn into Ionized Crackleberries, which give raw flux.

That is what we currently know of the Mothman. Since the launch of Season 12, we have two new NPCs that are connected to the Mothman. The Smiling Man also references Once in a Blue Moon, which may allude to Season 13. Check out our ever-growing list of Fallout 76 guides here on GameSkinny.
