Ah, the fabled all-but-game-breaking bug that’s both hilarious and incredibly annoying. This time in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. If you’ve ever wanted to be a sneaky snake while moving at a full sprint, ensuring you have full mobility but the lowest possible profile, MW3 players have your exploit.
Modern Warfare 3 Players Discover the Sprinting While Prone Bug — And It’s Worse Than it Sounds
As spotted in various Reddit threads, and noted in the official Modern Warfare 3 ongoing issues Trello and on X (Twitter) account, it’s currently possible to glitch the game so that you can move at full sprint while prone. And no: I’m not going to tell you how to do it because I don’t want to face you in multiplayer later doing it. I mean, that’s fair, right? Right.
The bug presents several major issues. The first, of course, is that it shouldn’t be possible. The second and most important is that it allows players to use all of MW3‘s movement tech while keeping the low profile of the prone position. I’m not sure if the hitbox of a player using the glitch is also affected (I’ve not faced anyone exploiting this yet), but I would suspect that it is.
Which brings me to the third problem: if indeed you count as prone during the exploit, you’re much harder to hit and see, creating a massive balance issue.
The fourth and final problem is essentially a glitch unto itself. Because MW3 doesn’t account well for someone moving as fast as players can move while sprinting while prone, your character model can partially clip through the floor. This knock-on effect only compounds the problems you’d already expect. With so many map exploits in the game already (some of which have been fixed, others likely still waiting to be found), I’d imagine someone’s going to find another under-the-map camping spot in no time. Great.
When Will the MW3 Sprinting While Prone Bug Be Fixed?
As for the timing on a fix for the sprinting while prone issue, all the known issues in the MW3 Trello say is that Sledgehammer and their teams are “investigating.” The official channels only started talking about the problem on November 22, and depending on how deep the issue runs, it could take more than a week to fix.
It comes at a bad time, as well, because I’m sure at least some of Sledgehammer’s’ QA and technical teams will be taking time off for the Thanksgiving holiday here in the U.S. Some might be on emergency call for the Black Friday and Cyber Monday rushes, but it would be a skeleton crew at best.
In short, expect more and more sneaky snakes moving at Mach 2 in your Modern Warfare 3 lobbies for at least the next few days and probably over the weekend. Hopefully, Sledgehammer and their partners at Activision can fix the sprinting while prone issue before Season 1 launches with the new Warzone experience.
