Rogue Lords

\n
    \n
  • Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One, Switch
  • \n
  • Release Date: TBD 2021
  • \n
\n

Rogue Lords is one of those games where you're unquestionably playing as the "bad guys" in the story. As the title suggests, it's a roguelike in which you literally take control of the Devil and his forces of evil.

\n

Your party will be full of characters like the Headless Horseman, Dracula, Bloody Mary, and more as you aim to terrorize brave mortals known as Demon Hunters in this somewhat humorous plot. It's one fans of both horror and RPGs will want to keep an eye on.

\n

There are plenty of RPGs, turn-based or otherwise, launching in 2021. This list doesn't exactly name all of them, so let us know in the comments below if we missed anything you're really looking forward to!

Fuga: Melodies of Steel

\n
    \n
  • Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One, Switch
  • \n
  • Release Date: TBD 2021
  • \n
\n

Delays have been coming for plenty of games recently, and unfortunately, Fuga: Melodies of Steel is no exception. With an original release window of late 2019, it eventually got delayed to 2020, then again to 2021.

\n

The game is being developed and published by CyberConnect2. These days, the company is best known for their Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm series, but Fuga is a turn-based RPG set in wartime, so there are almost no similarities between the two.

\n

Fuga: Melodies of Steel follows the story of children living in a war-torn land. In true anime fashion, the children stumble upon a tank that they soon use to fight back against the forces that have invaded their home. Hopefully, we'll learn more about it soon.

Loop Hero

\n
    \n
  • Platforms: PC
  • \n
  • Release Date: March 4, 2021
  • \n
\n

If you're into card games and roguelikes, then Loop Hero is definitely one of the RPGs that you should be looking out for this year. It's a deck-builder with an interesting twist.

\n

Each level has a pre-determined path that the hero must take in order to complete it. The path is made up of multiple tiles, and the player decides what goes on in each tile by using cards that the game deals.

\n

The cards can contain monsters, power-ups, buildings, and much more. To succeed, you'll need to cleverly plot a path in order for the hero to survive each loop. If Loop Hero has you even the slightest bit interested, you can try it out for yourself through the demo on Steam.

Disgaea 6: Defiance of Destiny

\n
    \n
  • Platforms: Switch
  • \n
  • Release Date: Summer 2021
  • \n
\n

This is a bit of a weird entry because Disgaea 6 already launched in Japan on January 28, 2021. With that said, Nippon Ichi Software recently released a character trailer to build hype for the game's western launch, while also providing some details for non-Japanese fans.

\n

It's been six years since the last Disgaea game, and in this entry, the plot focuses on a zombie named Zed and his sister Bieko. The sibling's journey through the Netherworld after a God of Destruction threatens their way of life.

\n

Disgaea 6 offers gameplay features that could help ease new players into the long series, just in case you were thinking of starting at the sixth entry. With Auto, Retry, and Replay options for combat, battles can be as easy or as difficult as you want them to be.

Wolfstride

\n
    \n
  • Platforms: PC
  • \n
  • Release Date: TBD 2021
  • \n
\n

Wolfstride seems so over-the-top in such a good way. It's got plenty of style in all 39 seconds of its only trailer. Developer OTA IMON Studios and publisher Raw Fury haven't shown off very much of the game yet, but it's still an RPG that you should look out for this year.

\n

The main trio of characters includes an ex-Yakuza, a rookie combat pilot, and a grizzled mechanic. They come together to form a team for the Ultimate Mech Tournament. It sounds like a wild anime plot you'll be able to play through.

\n

When you aren't upgrading/customizing your mechs or competing, you'll be exploring Rain City as you build relationships with its citizens. There's more to this game than meets the eye, and with that art style, you'll want to see all of it.

Shin Megami Tensei V

\n
    \n
  • Platforms: Switch
  • \n
  • Release Date: TBD 2021
  • \n
\n

Here's another entry with little to no details whatsoever provided by the developer. ATLUS announced Shin Megami Tensei V last summer during a short Nintendo Direct that focused solely on third-party releases.

\n

Since then, there's been no buzz at all surrounding the game. Even today's 50-minute long Nintendo Direct had no mention of it whatsoever. That being said, there'll still be plenty of chances for ATLUS to surprise fans with more info on the fifth mainline entry in the SMT franchise throughout the year.

\n

The only thing that we know for sure at this point is that SMT V will have a simultaneous worldwide release, which is a welcome surprise for an ATLUS game.

Darkest Dungeon 2

\n
    \n
  • Platforms: PC
  • \n
  • Release Date: TBD 2021
  • \n
\n

Darkest Dungeon came out back in 2015, and now, Darkest Dungeon 2 is "welcoming" players back to a new, nightmarish dungeon, six years later.

\n

Developer Red Hook Studios hasn't provided much info on the sequel just yet, but the turn-based roguelike RPG will be available in Early Access on the Epic Games Store at some point this year. Hopefully.

\n

Darkest Dungeon 2 will be exclusive to the EGS throughout its Early Access run, and no console plans have been finalized just yet, even though the original is available on PC, PS4, Xbox One, Switch.

King's Bounty II

\n
    \n
  • Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One, Switch
  • \n
  • Release Date: August 24, 2021
  • \n
\n

Here's another RPG that puts real emphasis on player choice. King's Bounty II wants fans to feel as though there's weight to every decision that they make.

\n

The game has players assume the role of one of three main characters, each with their own unique tale to tell. All three stories are full of non-linear plot points, tough moral choices, and a number of classes to choose from. All of this is in a world that mixes realism and fantasy.

Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous

\n
    \n
  • Platforms: PC
  • \n
  • Release Date: June 2021
  • \n
\n

This is another RPG that started out with a successful Kickstarter campaign, and developer Owlcat Games intends to give fans exactly what they crowdfunded this summer.

\n

Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous is a classic CRPG that draws players into the demon-infested realm of Sarkoris, where they'll be tasked with fighting back hordes of creatures in a righteous crusade.

\n

As the game progresses, players will be faced with plenty of choices as they're literally given control of the Fifth Crusade — a fierce push against the demons.

\n

If you're a Kickstarted backer, you can even get some hands-on time with the game in the backer-only beta ahead of its official launch.

  • \n
\n

A lot of us know about the bigger names in the land of RPGs, but what about some of the smaller, indie turn-based RPGs coming in 2021? Kickstarter game Black Book falls into that category.

\n

Developer Morteshka and publisher HypeTrain Digital have come together to create a narrative-driven card combat RPG set in a world where mythical creatures and humans live alongside one another.

\n

Black Book's setting is rooted in Slavic folk tales, with players following a sorceress named Vasilisa as she aims to obtain the mysterious Black Book — an artifact said to grant any wish.

\n

The game doesn't have a release date just yet, but it's set to launch in the first quarter of 2021.

Cris Tales

  • Platforms: PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Switch, Stadia
  • \n

Time travel is always a cool and interesting mechanic in games  unless it becomes overly complicated. Cris Tales is aiming to keep things relatively simple with gameplay features that allow players to see into the past, make decisions in the present, and watch the future change on-screen all at once.

\n

Cris Tales tells the tale of Crisbell. That's a bit of a tongue-twister, but the young heroine sets out on a journey in the land of Crystallis in order to stop the Time Empress.

Digimon Survive

\n
    \n
  • Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One, Switch
  • \n
  • Release Date: TBD 2021
  • \n
\n

Digimon is back once again. This time, it feels like pure nostalgia coated in a fresh, new coat of paint. Digimon Survive even borrows small story beats from the original anime.

\n

Saki, Takuma, and their friends are spending time at a summer camp when boredom forces them to venture out into the wild. They eventually end up in a different world after walking through a mysterious shrine. And of course, they meet Digimon once they arrive.

\n

Digimon Survive is a tactical RPG that provides both turn-based combat and choice-filled "Drama Parts" containing Persona-style social bond systems.

\n

The game is presented as a somewhat ominous trip to the digital world, with "death and danger" waiting for the children as they attempt to return home.

Digimon Survive is delayed to sometime in 2021 for PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch, Bandai Namco has announced. The development team cited the COVID-19 pandemic for the delay, but it promised new information about the game in Spring 2021.

The game's producer, Kazumasa Habu, said:

We had originally planned to launch Digimon Survive in 2020, but current world events have shifted our development timing and we have made the difficult decision to push Digimon Survive‘s launch to 2021.

Habu mentioned reorganizing the development team on Twitter a few days before the announcement (as translated by Gematsu) and mentioned "refocusing" Digimon Survive's development schedule.

Bandai issued a statement alongside the announcement, saying "Digimon Survive is a highly ambitious project and the development team is dedicated to providing fans with a complete experience at launch."

They've shown that dedication already. Earlier in 2020, the Survive team said they were overhauling development because they thought Survive was turning out "sloppy."

Digimon Survive combines a visual novel experience with tactical gameplay. It follows a group of young people transported to a dangerous new world and the Digi-partners who accompany them and balance their personality foibles.

So far, Bandai Namco has revealed:

Digimon Survive might have been delayed a bit (again), but that hasn't stopped Bandai Namco from releasing another character spotlight. This Digimon Survive character spotlight introduces us to Miu Shinonome, Kaito Shinonome's sister, and her partner Digimon Syakomon.

The translation of this spotlight comes from Gematsu.

Miu is the one who tells Saki Kimijima about the mysterious shrine in the woods, near her and Kaito's home. That's partly because Miu developed a significant interest in the occult and partly because she's fed up with Kaito's overprotectiveness and wants to do something on her own.

Kaito's reputation means Miu doesn't have many friends at school; once they arrive in the other world, she tells Kaito she hates him and runs off.

In contrast to Miu's fixation with the world of the unseen, her partner Digimon Syakomon is grounded and sensible. Much like Shuuki Kayama and his Digimon Lopmon, Miu and Syakomon balance each other's personalities.

The original story is over on Gematsu. Hopefully, we'll hear some news about Digimon Survive's release window sometime soon, but stay tuned to GameSkinny for more Digimon Survive news either way.

"Sloppy" Digimon Survive Delayed for "Overhaul" https://www.gameskinny.com/ruggo/sloppy-digimon-survive-delayed-for-overhaul https://www.gameskinny.com/ruggo/sloppy-digimon-survive-delayed-for-overhaul Wed, 22 Apr 2020 12:04:40 -0400 Josh Broadwell

[Update 4/22:] According to Gematsu, Famitsu confirmed Digimon Survive's release date was changed to "TBA," though Bandai says that's not correct. Digimon Survive is still set for a 2020 release date. The original story follows below.

There's some rather disappointing Digimon Survive news today. According to the Japanese gaming site Ryokuta, as translated by Nintendo Everything, Digimon Survive is delayed indefinitely, with a TBD release date now.

Bandai Namco hasn't actually confirmed the information about the Digimon SRPG-Virtual novel spinoff yet, but the Ryokuta post cites issues in development as the delay's cause.

Specifically, the Digimon Survive dev team said character development has become "sloppy," and the entire design needs to be "overhauled." This view reportedly comes in light of the new Digimon anime, but it's unclear how that might have affected Survive.

It's something of a surprise development either way. Ever since last year's in-depth Digimon Survive dev diary, we've been getting gradual information drips focused on key characters and their Digimon partners.

Still, if these changes help the development team create a finished product they're proud of and that fulfills their goals, it can only be a good thing. We've endured Digimon Survive delays already, after all.

The original story is over on Ryokuta, and the translated version lives on Nintendo Everything. Stay tuned to GameSkinny for more Digimon Survive news as it (hopefully) Digi-volves.

Digimon Survive Spotlights Kaito Shinonome and Dracmon https://www.gameskinny.com/xdcqu/digimon-survive-spotlights-kaito-shinonome-and-dracmon https://www.gameskinny.com/xdcqu/digimon-survive-spotlights-kaito-shinonome-and-dracmon Mon, 23 Mar 2020 12:37:36 -0400 Josh Broadwell

It's been a little while since we had any fresh Digimon Survive news, but Bandai Namco recently published another character snapshot (translated by Gematsu). This time, it's all about the violent, headstrong delinquent Kaito Shinonome and his role in the tactical digital-monster spinoff.

Kaito is a ruffian with a heart. He has a strong sense of justice and will do anything for his little sister, including thrashing a group of kids who were relentlessly teasing her. Unfortunately for Kaito, his short temper often lands him into trouble, especially when he finds himself transported to a new world.

In an effort to stop his sister from exploring the mysterious shrine, he instead goes with the protagonist and a group of others. Kaito's darker side often explodes to the surface thanks to the stress this new world causes, but he's not alone.

Enter Dracmon. This trouble-loving Digimon helps cool Kaito down and encourages him to think things through, when Kaito is in danger of losing his temper. Even still, Dracmon tries to maintain a healthy distance from Kaito — just in case.

While we still don't know when Digimon Survive's release date is for Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC, this latest character spotlight is helping round out what we do know so far. Last time, we met Shuuji and Lopmon, and before that, Bandai showed off Saki Kimijuma and her Digi-partner Floramon.

Stay tuned to GameSkinny for more Digimon Survive news as it develops.

The visual novel and strategy-RPG hybrid Digimon Survive is coming out... eventually, for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Ahead of its vague 2020 release date, Bandai Namco released some more information about two characters who will accompany Takumi to the mysterious other world: Shuuji Kayama and Lopmon.

Shuuji is a driven young man, determined to surpass everyone around him thanks to his father's strict ideals and education. He usually succeeds — until he finds himself in the other world, that is. There, Shuuji's facade of reliability falls apart. He can't handle the pressure of not knowing everything about this world and starts blaming everyone and everything else.

His partner is the laid back Lopmon, a Beast Digimon. Unlike the brash Saki Kimijuma and her partner Floramon, Shuuji doesn't really get along with Lopmon at first. He sees Lopmon as lazy and, therefore, not worth his time. How you could make this face sad and live with yourself afterwards is beyond us, though.

Bandai Namco also outlined another of Digimon Survive's mechanics, the Digital Device Camera. The students trapped in the other world will use their smartphones, aka Digital Devices, to take photos and uncover things they can't see with just their eyes alone. In addition to finding Digimon this way, the Digital Device will be key to clearing the game's investigation portions.

Hopefully, regular drip of information we're getting means a Digimon Survive release date will be announced soon, perhaps coinciding with the new Digimon film coming up. Whatever the case may be, stay tuned to GameSkinny for more Digimon Survive news as it comes our way.

Digimon Survive is set for worldwide release on Nintendo Switch, PC, and PlayStation 4 sometime this year, and Bandai Namco just offered some juicy details about the upcoming title, which cover some of the game's main characters and the Persona-like Free Time system.

First up, we have Saki Kimijuma. She's a first-year middle school student who seems popular but actually drives most of her friends away with her unique and outspoken personality. One day, during a particularly boring summer camp — which should seem pretty familiar to fans of the classic Digimon anime — she meets up with Takuma and his friends. Together, they walk through an old shrine and end up in a completely different world.

It's a world with kind and deadly Digimon. Saki befriends the peculiar Floramon, peculiar because it has reptilian characteristics mixed in with its Plant-type qualities. Curious though it may be, her new friend plays an important role in keeping her safe from the less pleasant denizens Saki and friends encounter in the game's tactical RPG combat.

Outside of combat, Digimon Survive focuses on "Drama Parts," how you spend your time with friends and interact with the world. It's split into two systems, the "Search Action" and "Free Time Action."

Search Action has you finding a solution to a specific crisis or problem facing your group, while Free Time Action is where you get to spend time with friends. You'll learn about their troubles and strengthen your bonds with them, and those bonds will have important effects during battle as well.

Stay tuned to GameSkinny for more Digimon Survive news as it digi-volves.

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga

\n

Developer: Traveller's Tales
Release Date
: TBA 2020

\n

Another Lego Star Wars game? I hear you cry in exasperation. Yes, it is another Lego Star Wars game — with a twist.

\n

Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga includes Lego versions of The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker, the two films that haven't yet been turned into Lego games (partly because The Rise of Skywalker hasn't actually debuted yet, of course).

\n

More importantly, the other seven Lego Star Wars games have been completely rebuilt. These aren't the same games you've already played with a fresh coat of paint. They take advantage of more recent changes to the Lego formula, like open worlds with big hubs, more emphasis on character abilities, and things like that.

\n

The galaxy changes as you progress too. While you might explore Tatooine in A New Hope and everything looks hunky-dory, when you go back under a later game to explore, portions of it (i.e. Luke's home) are completely unrecognizable.

\n

It's taking advantage of Star Wars mania, sure, but in all the right ways thanks to these changes. Here's a chance to experience the entire Lego Star Wars saga afresh, even after the Skywalker story ends this December.

\n

\n

While Nintendo is still playing its cards close about first-party Switch releases in 2020, there's definitely not going to be a shortage of games to play on the Switch.

\n

Whether you're longing for escape to an island paradise, keeping Tokyo safe from Fire Emblem demons bent on world domination, or just casually carrying out corporate conquest on a planet far, far away, 2020 is going to be another busy year for Switch owners.

DOOM Eternal

\n

Developer: id Software
Release Date
: TBA 2020

\n

Doom Eternal is a good metaphor for the series' relationship with Nintendo. It starts promising but ends up hitting so many complications on the way.

\n

Doom Eternal was supposed to be out this year for all platforms. Then it got pushed back to March 20, 2020 — and the Switch version got a TBA for 2020.

\n

Really, it's okay because a finished game is better than a crap one, and hopefully it gives the dev team time to work without having the life completely crunched out of them.

\n

Whenever it launches, Doom Eternal looks like it's going to be well worth the wait. It takes a slightly different approach from other Doom games, since it takes place on Earth, plus it's said to be twice as long as the usual Doom games.

\n

Other than that, it's the same over-the-top combat against hordes of demonic aliens, with wild weapons, showers of blood, more blood, and more demonic aliens bent on murdering you — definitely not for the squeamish or anti-violent.

\n

Disappointing though the delay may be, Doom 64 is still set to launch on the Switch on March 20, 2020.

No More Heroes 3

\n

Developer: Grasshopper Manufacture
Release Date
: TBA 2020

\n

E3 2019's announcement of No More Heroes 3 was a welcome surprise.

\n

Suda51's cult classic No More Heroes series first debuted in the Wii era as a tribute to hardcore action fans. Protagonist Travis Touchdown takes on the role of hero by using his modified lightsaber-ish beam sword to essentially hack anything and everything to pieces.

\n

That irreverent attitude towards the establishment, plus some equally unorthodox gameplay mechanics (like how you recharge your weapon and save), carved a niche for the series and created an intense demand for more.

\n

There was a sequel in 2010. 2010. Almost ten years ago, ten years with no more No More Heroes.

\n

That changed a bit with Travis Strikes Again, but it didn't really scratch the itch. Finally at E3 this year, a proper sequel was announced. Other than knowing No More Heroes 3's release date is 2020 and that it features Travis returning to Santa Destroy after ten years to find an artificial city hovering over the real one.

\n

From there is anyone's guess what happens and why. This is Suda51 after all.

The Outer Worlds: Nintendo Switch

\n

Developer: Obsidian Entertainment
Release Date
: Early 2020

\n

Obsidian Entertainment's The Outer Worlds is coming to Nintendo Switch early in 2020. Let that sink in for a minute.

\n

The Outer Worlds is a sci-fi game set in a distant world you're tasked with bringing under the control of a massive intergalactic corporation. The story and gameplay elements aren't anything revolutionary, true. But The Outer Worlds gets its characters just right, with each party member and even NPC playing an important role alongside your own. It's the kind of depth Obsidian is known for, and it makes every playthrough unique.

\n

Not only is it one of 2019's most anticipated — and successful — AAA titles, but it's a tremendously short span of time from its launch on other consoles to its Switch launch. Where Skyrim took six years to arrive on a Nintendo console, The Witcher 3 took four, and now The Outer Worlds is potentially going to take less than a year. It's quite an achievement and bodes well for the Switch's future, as we predicted would happen.

Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition

\n

Developer: Monolith Soft
Release Date
: TBA 2020

\n

Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition is a remastered version of the Wii original Xenoblade Chronicles — and that's about all we know. It was first shown off in the September Nintendo Direct, and other than boasting gorgeous new graphics, releasing sometime in 2020, and potentially using material cut from the original, there's still a lot that's unclear about this remaster.

\n

Fortunately, we know the most important part: it'll be amazing. The original Xenoblade Chronicles is one of the best JRPGs of its era. Granted, that isn't saying much seeing as it launched in a period with relatively little competition. But the narrative scope, massive and intricate settings, blending of fantasy with sci-fi, and unique battle system still stand strong after almost ten years.

\n

If you've played Xenoblade Chronicles 2, you'll notice a few key differences, namely that combat is simplified with no Blades and relatively fewer combo opportunities. That's a trade-off for a streamlined narrative that starts strong and never lets up and massive areas to explore that somehow seem more open than the sequel's.

\n

Most important is the graphical update, though. It's not like the original was nightmare-inducing, but...oh wait, yes it was.

Rune Factory 5

\n

Developer: XSEED
Release Date
: TBA 2020

\n

Marvelous has been keeping a tight lid on Rune Factory 5, so tight, the above trailer showcasing a few bits of monster art and maybe the protagonist's house is all we've seen about the upcoming Rune Factory game. Other than knowing it'll be out sometime after Rune Factory 4 Special and has some kind of crossover connectivity, that's it.

\n

Sure, we could put Rune Factory 4 Special on here instead, but RF5 is kind of a big deal. By the time it releases, it'll be the first new Rune Factory game we've seen in seven years. That's a long time in general, but even longer considering the release gaps between the first four Rune Factory games were even longer.

\n

The series might be a spinoff, but it has plenty of strong points to make it worth looking into. For one, it's the reason we have monsters and dangerous exploration in Stardew Valley, being the first of its kind to introduce monster hunting and ranching into the usual farming mix. It also goes a step further Harvest Moon and Story of Seasons with the detail of its world map and characters. While there might be plenty of other farming-sim games vying for your attentionRune Factory offers a completely different kind of experience.

Digimon Survive

\n

Developer: Bandai Namco
Release Date
: TBA 2020

\n

Digimon games have been on a roll in recent years. The Cyber Sleuth games revitalized the series in the West — which I ramble about at length elsewhere — and encouraged the development team to keep localizing games for international distribution.

\n

That's a good thing, because Digimon Survive is looking like another big step forward for the franchise, and it's set to launch sometime next year on all platforms, including Nintendo Switch.

\n

Survive takes elements of visual novels, adventure games, and strategy RPGs as it tasks players with choosing which friends to bond with, how they bond with their Digimon, and then how they manage these bonds on the battlefleds to try and, well...survive...in some sort of alternate, post-apocalyptic world.

\n

Outside time and bond management, Digivolving will play an even bigger role than usual, as Digimon can evolve or devolve at any point during a battle, if certain requirements are met. Normally, Digivolution depends on the Digimon's stats, but in Survive, it'll all relate to how you've forged your bonds outside battle.

\n

It's been delayed already, but it certainly seems worth the wait and might just be the most ambitious Digimon game yet.

Atelier Dusk Trilogy Deluxe Pack

\n

Developer: Koei Tecmo
Release Date
: January 14, 2020

\n

Gust and Koei Tecmo have been busy pumping out games in the long-running Atelier franchise this year, with Atelier Lulua earlier, that building-sim disaster we won't talk about, and Atelier Ryza just last month. All these and the original Arland trilogy are available on the Switch, which leaves one noticeable gap: the Dusk trilogy.

\n

Koei Tecmo America is filling that gap first thing in the new year with the Atelier Dusk Trilogy Deluxe Pack. It's the DX, expanded versions of Atelier Ayesha, Atelier Escha & Logy, and Atelier Shallie, all of which were previously only available on the Vita, though the vanilla versions were on the PlayStation 3.

\n

The Dusk trilogy is praised for moving the series forward in terms of narrative scope and character development. While it's still very much a case of cute girls doing cute things and making items, there's an overarching narrative tying their stories together. Plus, it brought some much-needed changes to the brutal time system and improved item synthesis a good bit as well.

\n

Like the Arland trilogy, all three will be available separately on the eShop as well.

Minecraft Dungeons

\n

Developer: Mojang
Release Date
: April 2020

\n

Minecraft Dungeons is Minecraft meets Diablo, and that's not a bad thing by any account. The above footage is from an Xbox event, but it does a much better job showcasing what the game is about than the original reveal trailer.

\n

The idea is your party of adorable little Minecraft figures explores a variety of dungeons built in Minecraft fashion, takes on hordes of enemies, gathers loot, then uses said loot to get even stronger by making weapons, armor, and the like.

\n

The focus is on everything you can't do in regular Minecraft, like explore for a purpose or deck your avatar out in gear that makes them a complete killing machine. It's looking like you'll need that gear too, since Minecraft Dungeons doesn't appear to skimp on the mob hordes. Luckily, you'll get special abilities and magic to help keep you alive too.

\n

It's a clever twist to the usual build-and-craft formula. It's surprising this didn't happen earlier, really, though it's in keeping with Microsoft's desire to expand the Minecraft property in new ways.

Trials of Mana

\n

Developer: Square Enix
Release date
: April 24, 2020

\n

Remember how we pined for any release of Seiken Densetsu 2 — now known as Trials of Mana — before 2019, even if it was just a fan translation? Well, not only did Square Enix (finally) bring the Collection of Mana west over the summer, complete with the (finally) localized Trials of Mana, but the game is being completely remade from the ground up for a standalone release in 2020.

\n

Secret of Mana is widely regarded as a masterpiece of an RPG, and Trials of Mana manages to do one even better. It builds on Secret of Mana with branching storylines, multiple job classes, and an overall more epic narrative scope. Part of that scope is because the story can change depending on how you construct your party; it's not necessarily a huge deal now, but for the SNES era, it was something we didn't typically see outside the SaGa games.

\n

The Trials of Mana remake boasts completely redesigned 3D maps and models and a revamped battle system. While some of the character modeling looks a bit iffy, and it seems the characters are definitely on the chatty side during battle, this is an RPG to keep an eye on.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons

\n

Developer: Nintendo
Release Date
: March 20, 2020

\n

E3 2019 gave us a delicious glimpse of the newest Animal Crossing game, Animal Crossing: New Horizons — and then told us it wasn't out until March 2020. Investors might have flipped out over that fact, but it definitely looks worth the wait.

\n

New Horizons moves away from the town mayor feature of New Leaf — which is the only thing it could do to stay fresh — and instead puts everyone on a deserted island. You're tasked with building a town there, but the major gameplay elements and flow of progression remain largely the same, with a few notable exceptions.

\n

One is crafting. You'll be making a lot of your items, tools, and possibly even furniture in New Horizons with the materials you find on the island. Then, a la Happy Home Designer, you can put your furniture anywhere you want, on the beach, near a tree — whatever floats your handicraft boat. In typical Nintendo fashion, it's a small change that simultaneously opens up a huge range of new possibilities (and it's one of the Animal Crossing changes this writer was hoping for the most).

\n

Whatever New Horizons does or doesn't change, we just hope that jazzy tune from the trailer makes a reappearance.

Fairy Tail

\n

Developer: Koei Tecmo
Release Date
: March 19, 2020

\n

Gust, makers of the Atelier and Ar Tonelico games, are behind the brand-new video game version of the popular manga and anime series Fairy Tail. Fairy Tail follows protagonists Natsu Dragneel and Lucy Heartfilia as they join a guild and journey across the dangerous land of Fiore.

\n

It's your typical shonen-style anime, with big hair, bigger attacks, and even bigger personalities, but those characters are what make Fairy Tail stand out for so many people. There are a lot of stories to follow, and each one's usually interesting enough to stand on its own. You can catch a glimpse of some of those characters in the release date trailer that was just unveiled too.

\n

Like Sword Art Online it's looking like Fairy Tail for Nintendo Switch is really going to be for fans of the franchise, with a boatload of familiar figures, places, and concepts featuring in every trailer so far. The game's goal is to be faithful to the manga, though, so it very well could be a decent entry point for anyone unfamiliar with the series too.

Langrisser 1 & 2

\n

Developer: NIS America
Release Date
: Early 2020

\n

Langrisser was one of those somewhat elusive strategy RPG series most Western fans couldn't get their hands on — legally, at least. Most of the games and their remakes stayed in Japan, but now, partly thanks to the mobile version's success and probably thanks to Fire Emblem's roaring rebirth in recent years, that's about to change.

\n

Langrisser 1 & 2 is a full remake of the series' first two titles (y'know, in case that wasn't obvious) with new designs, plenty of quality of life improvements, dual voice, and brand-new orchestrations.

\n

Gameplay-wise, Langrisser is a lot like Fire Emblem, with an emphasis on character class and army organization. One thing that Langrisser does differently, though, is its story. The entire series centers around an ages-old conflict between divine beings that regularly plays out in the normal world. This time, it takes the form of invasions from kingdoms suddenly turned aggressive and the forces of darkness working behind the scenes.

\n

"So... like Fire Emblem" you say. Yes, but these stories and the lands they're set in are connected; the games take place on the same continent with connections between characters and kingdoms stretching back to the past.

\n

Right now, it's not completely clear when the collection will launch; some listings say February, others don't. Just expect it sometime early 2020.

Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore

\n

Developer: Atlus
Release Date
: January 17, 2020

\n

It's name is certainly a mouthful, but Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore is definitely not an RPG to overlook. On the surface, it's a bizarre mashup of Atlus' Shin Megami Tensei series and Nintendo's Fire Emblem, with a huge portion of J-pop on top.

\n

Underneath that, it's still a bizarre mashup of all those things, but its seamless execution and exhilarating, over-the-top battles make it a strong RPG that was sadly trapped on a dying system, the Wii U.

\n

It's coming to the Switch almost first-thing in 2020 and brings with it even more content than the original.

\n

The mashup works like this: basically, the setting and battle system are SMT, while characters and narrative influences are Fire Emblem. You've got the evil forces from beyond this world trying to invade, and battle requires careful exploitation of enemy weaknesses to get an advantage, just like SMT. But you'll be summoning Mirages instead of demons, and these Mirages just so happen to be famous Fire Emblem heroes.

\n

Oh, and your party is an aspiring band of J-pop Idols and every battle is a performance, because Japan.

\n

When Tokyo Mirage Sessions first released, Fire Emblem Fates and Awakening were "the" big Fire Emblem hits, so most of the FE portions revolve around those characters. Even though Three Houses has taken over that top spot and Encore includes new material, don't get your hopes up for an Edelgard Mirage.

The Nintendo Switch had a stellar year in 2019, from excellent ports like Dragon Quest XIS to new entries in long-running franchises like Fire Emblem: Three Houses and Pokemon Sword and Shield. With such a jam-packed year, it's hard to imagine 2020 could have anything similar in store.

That goes double when you consider a lot of the big hitters are still missing from next year's schedule. Persona 5 Scramble might not release in the West next year, Shin Megami Tensei V might get a new trailer for 2020, and Breath of the Wild 2 and Metroid Prime 4 are still just distant blips on the radar.

\n

Fortunately, there's still plenty of goodness ahead, making owning a Switch in 2020 still worth it.

\n

There's first party goodness like Animal Crossing: New Horizons to look forward to and a veritable ton of third party software on its way, from The Outer Worlds and Trials of Mana to Doom Eternal and a new Minecraft game.

\n

So buckle up (your wallet) as we take you through the top 13 upcoming Switch games for 2020 in the order of release dates.

Deadside

\n
    \n
  • Developer: Bad Pixel
  • \n
  • Platforms: PC
  • \n
  • Release date: TBA
  • \n
\n

Set in a huge open world, Deadside is a hardcore online shooter with survival elements. In many ways, Deadside is not a typical survival game because it mainly focuses on shooting, hunting for enemies, and completing missions.

\n

However, it will have the generally accepted traits of all survival games, such as eating food in order to survive.

\n

The game's primary locations, such as forests, riverlands, and small cities, will be static and remain unchanged, but the inhabitants of these locations will dynamically change. Such places can be occupied by hostile NPCs, and you will have the choice to either to pass by or clear the territory and collect valuable loot.

Grounded

    \n
  • Developer: Obsidian Entertainment
  • \n
  • Platforms: PC, Xbox One
  • \n
  • Release date: TBA
  • \n
\n

Grounded was recently announced at Microsoft's X02019 event in London. It comes from Obsidian, the developers of The Outer Worlds and Fallout: New Vegas

\n

Grounded features four playable characters and will focus on co-operative gameplay. For example, one player can begin an outline of a building, and other players can finish it.

\n

Each creature in the game, down to the last insect, has its own specific behavior, which varies depending on your actions. For example, killing all aphids in one area will cause ladybugs to migrate to other areas.

\n

In addition, Grounded has a crafting system that is based on items that naturally generate in the world. Having collected the necessary ingredients, you can create a gas mask and visit previously inaccessible biomes with a poisonous atmosphere.

\n

It's survival meets Metroidvania.

  • Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One
  • \n
  • Release date: TBA

Polish developer VeCube's new survival game takes place in the Polish section of the Carpathian Mountains. Odludzie is based on Unreal Engine 4 and promises highly realistic graphics.

\n

Involved in a plane crash, Odludzie's protagonist finds himself far from civilization. Deep in the Carpathian forest, he has to rely solely on his skills. As with other survival games like The Forest, his strength and endurance decrease, forcing him to forage and hunt for food, as well as build a suitable shelter.

\n

As expected, players can create primitive weapons and other creative means of obtaining even more and better food. In addition to the standard set of survival elements, the game will also have a variety of puzzles to solve.

The Last of Us Part 2

    \n
  • Developer: Naughty Dog
  • \n
  • Platforms: PS4
  • \n
  • Release date: May 29, 2020
  • \n
\n

The sequel to The Last of Us, one of the best survival games ever created, The Last of Us Part 2 is set in a similar post-apocalyptic setting and looks to use similar gameplay elements as TLoU. This time, a grown-up Ellie seems to be the primary focus, though Joel is said to be more than just a passing influence.

\n

Naughty Dog promises an advanced graphics engine will power The Last of Us Part 2, and that there are a number of new enemies to fight. From what we know so far, parts of the game will take place in Seattle, Washington, and that the story is being worked on by Halley Gross, co-writer of Westworld.

\n

With that knowledge, expect another solid single-player experience in The Last of Us Part 2. According to reports, the sequel will not have a multiplayer component unlike the first game.

Dying Light 2

\n
    \n
  • Developer: Techland
  • \n
  • Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One
  • \n
  • Release date: Q1/Q2 2020
  • \n
\n

Dying Light 2 is the sequel to a sensational Dying Light. From what we've seen, the sequel will still employ the series' parkour elements, advanced artificial intelligence, and, of course, the adrenaline pumping gameplay that made the first game such a success.

\n

The events of Dying Light 2 take place 15 years after Dying Light. This time, however, players control a new protagonist. Dying Light 2 is set in a massive open-world called The City, which is four times bigger than the map of the original game.

\n

Also, Techland promises an advanced ecosystem and improved interaction with the world. Though we don't yet know exactly what that means, it sounds great, and we can't wait to learn more.

\n

In the meantime, be sure to check out 26 minutes of Dying Light 2 gameplay from E3 2019.

Digimon Survive Delayed to 2020 https://www.gameskinny.com/jjui6/digimon-survive-delayed-to-2020 https://www.gameskinny.com/jjui6/digimon-survive-delayed-to-2020 Sun, 07 Jul 2019 12:02:06 -0400 Erroll Maas

At the "Future of Digimon" panel during Anime Expo 2019, it was revealed that the upcoming strategy RPG set in the Digimon universe, Digimon Survive, has been delayed to 2020. The game was previously slated to release sometime in 2019

Producer Kazumasa Habu also revealed some new information about the game. The setting for Digimon Survive is actually a different world from what fans have seen before in the Digimon franchise. Habu revealed that the world was heavily inspired by Japanese mythology.

Additionally, due to a conversation with the director of Digimon Adventure, an idea brought up and featured in Digimon Survive is how Digimon have actually existed since ancient times and were thought of as spirits. In this mythology, humans rarely interacted with Digimon before society was introduced to digital technology.

One other way that Digimon Survive was inspired by Digimon Adventure was how Digimon respond to their human partner's emotional state. Player choices will affect how Digimon respond as well as their digivolutions, so players will experience the consequences of the actions they take.

The opening movie for the game was also revealed to those attending the panel, but it has not yet been released anywhere online.

Earlier this year, new details about the game were released in a developer diary. Including other details, the developer diary shared what players can expect from the game's combat.

Combat borrows a lot from traditional tactical RPGs, but the key feature here is digivolution. Digimon can digivolve at any point during the battle, but doing so uses up the player's energy. It can be refilled by exploiting enemy weaknesses.

Digimon Survive will launch for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch some time in 2020.

At Last, Digimon Survive Gets New Info in Game Dev Diary https://www.gameskinny.com/s1qdj/at-last-digimon-survive-gets-new-info-in-game-dev-diary https://www.gameskinny.com/s1qdj/at-last-digimon-survive-gets-new-info-in-game-dev-diary Fri, 31 May 2019 15:19:31 -0400 Josh Broadwell

Bandai Namco recently released a lengthy new developers' diary all about Digimon Survive, and it provides some interesting insight into the game's origins and overall mechanics.

The video is essentially an interview with game producers Habu Kazumasa and Tsuzuki Katsuaki. To start with, Survive isn't presently a brand-new direction for the Digimon series, so fans looking forward to the next Story game shouldn't worry. It's in production now, Kazumasa states in the interview.

Digimon Story is the team's main focus for the franchise, in fact. How it emphasizes the individual monsters and creates an immersive world players can enjoy with said monsters is credited with making the series viable overseas, which also makes side-projects like Survive possible.

Instead, Survive is acting as a lengthy experiment for the team, where they can create a mashup of several different mechanics that might not work in a mainline Story game and that also don''t have to be innovative or highly specialized.

For example, Survive's two core portions are combat and drama, as Katsuaki refers to them. We already knew the drama portion is more like a visual novel. However, it includes elements of traditional adventure games as well, for example, having multiple locations to choose from at a given time, providing players with branching dialogue options, and making them choose which characters to spend time with.

Bridging the gap between the anime and games, and between longtime fans and newcomers, is another goal the team has for Survive.Kazumasa said he wanted to emphasize these elements because it helps incorporate the sense of adventure fans say they love about the anime.

All of that has a direct effect on the combat portion. Combat borrows a lot from traditional tactical RPGs, but the key feature here is digivolution. Digimon can digivolve at any point during the battle, but doing so uses up the player's energy. It can be refilled by exploiting enemy weaknesses.

Yet there's even more to the evolution system. The team wanted to incorporate another element from the anime as well: how Digimon change based on their partner's heart. Not much else was said about this particular mechanic, but the choices players make in the drama portion will influence how their partners evolve.

Katsuaki says choosing whether and when to evolve, plus keeping an eye on energy meters and considering the choices made, will add an extra layer of depth to the strategy on whole.

Digimon Survive is set for a fall release in Japan, though no Western release date has been announced yet.

New Digimon Story Game Reconfirmed to be in Development https://www.gameskinny.com/5c1bv/new-digimon-story-game-reconfirmed-to-be-in-development https://www.gameskinny.com/5c1bv/new-digimon-story-game-reconfirmed-to-be-in-development Wed, 12 Sep 2018 12:39:24 -0400 Erroll Maas

In the most recent issue of Weekly Famitsu, Digimon Survive producers Katsuaki Tsuzuki and Kazumasa Habu reconfirmed that a new Digimon Story title is currently in development. This comes after it was first revealed to be in development last December.

The two producers also shared more information about upcoming strategy survival RPG, Digimon Survive, claiming that it is being made to tide fans over until the next Digimon Story title, and they hope it will become a series of its own like both Digimon Story and Digimon World.

The producers also talked about how various characters can die depending on player choices, and they feel that certain story developments would be more difficult to implement in an anime series. At the moment, there are three different scenario routes which lead to different outcomes, but they may add another one as development continues.  Digivolutions will be affected by scenario choices as well.

Additionally, the status of enemies and allies will be shown during battle, and victory conditions will change depending on player choices.

Digimon Survive is set to feature over 100 different Digimon, but the developers wanted to focus on Digimon that match the atmosphere of the world rather than the number of Digimon featured in-game. They would also like to add more Digimon original to the game in the future.

Development is said to be only 30% complete at the time of the interview, but Digimon Survive is still set to launch sometime in 2019 for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch in North America and Europe. It will only launch on PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch in Japan.

It will be the first Digimon title to release on Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.

Strategy JRPG Digimon Survive Heads West in 2019 https://www.gameskinny.com/u8k67/strategy-jrpg-digimon-survive-heads-west-in-2019 https://www.gameskinny.com/u8k67/strategy-jrpg-digimon-survive-heads-west-in-2019 Mon, 30 Jul 2018 12:52:17 -0400 Erroll Maas

Bandai Namco has announced that Digimon Survive, a strategy JRPG based on the Digimon franchise, will be heading to North America and Europe in 2019 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

Digimon Survive stars a group of teenagers, including leader Takuma Momozuka, who get lost during a school camping trip and end up in the digital world, similar to the beginning of the Digimon Adventure anime series.

Digimon Survive features grid-based battles where actions consume energy, which must be appropriately managed to achieve victory. Energy can also be used to help Digimon allies digivolve and gain an advantage in battle.

Besides turn-based battles, Digimon Survive will also feature visual-novel style story scenes, as well as areas to explore and investigate where hidden keys will be found. As the game progresses player choices will impact how their Digimon allies digivolve, as well as how the story plays out and how it ends.

Digimon Survive celebrates the 20th anniversary of the Digimon anime, and features character designs by Uichi Ukumo and music by composer Tomoki Miyoshi (I Am Setsuna, Soul Calibur V).

Stay tuned to GameSkinny for more news and info on Digimon Survive as it develops.
