Greybox's free-to-play game of tactical space combat has finally come to the PlayStation 4, opening the doors for countless new console players who want to command their own capital ship to victory!

But where do you even begin? GameSkinny has been getting a feel for the galactic conquest that Dreadnought provides, and we've put together some tips and tricks for all you new captains out there.

Spend Your Money Wisely

This goes for both your in-game credits and for your actual, folding cash.

In-game, most players hit a wall fastest when it comes to their credits, as opposed to their experience points. The best way to counteract this (and make that grind as painless as possible) is to buy only the modules you need for your ship. If you're planning on putting some real-life money into the game, put it toward your credits! Experience points are rarely as big an issue as other games might have led you to believe at this point.

Recycle, Recycle, Recycle

When you upgrade to a ship at a higher Tier, it's easy to go straight into the next battle, grinding away again to get new modules for your Tier 4 (or even Tier 5) ship.

But don't forget: modules from your old and busted ships can be used on your new ones, even if they're a lower Tier! Sure, sure: no one likes the idea of tricking out their new Ferrari with rims from their Chevy Malibu, but those Ferraris in question are rarely being pelted from all sides with heavy torpedoes and blast pulses!

A little extra ammunition never hurt anyone, even if it is just the the hand-me-downs you've got until the next best thing comes along.

Don't Like a Ship? Don't Play It!

This seems like obvious advice, but what we're really going for here is the fact that all ships, even the ones passively in your fleet, will receive experience points after every battle. It won't be a huge amount, but it'll certainly get your least favorite ships leveled up to a point where they're not entirely useless.

This is particularly good advice if you try out a new ship at Tier 3 and it feels awful. After some grinding and passive leveling, you might be really surprised at how much that ship improves when it finally gets to Tier 4. So in the beginning, the best thing to do is experiment with your ships, find one that suits you, and level up the others in the background.

Take Advantage of the Officers

Officer Briefings can add some excellent passive abilities, and any one of them can be put toward any ship. There are plenty of them to unlock, so as you play, get to know your style, and keep an eye on what you'll need to do to bring aboard the Briefing that will enhance your strategies the best.

Mix It Up!

Try different combinations of ship styles until you find one that works for you, and don't go too heavily in one direction (e.g., all Artillery). Those kinds of strategies work occasionally but will leave you vulnerable more often than not.

One fundamental rule, however, is the same as just about any class-based multiplayer game: keep a healer on hand. A single Tactical Cruiser can mean the difference between a slim victory and your entire fleet being reduced to floating scraps of metal.

Stick Together!

Everyone wants to be the hero, and everyone has had that moment when they thought they knew the best target for their party. But more often than not, the key to taking control of a map and executing your targets has a lot to do with unit cohesion. Just watch what happens to stragglers in your opponent's group, and you'll see what I mean.

Best Free-to-Play PC Games Released in 2017 https://www.gameskinny.com/515so/best-free-to-play-pc-games-released-in-2017 https://www.gameskinny.com/515so/best-free-to-play-pc-games-released-in-2017 Mon, 13 Nov 2017 16:12:07 -0500 Brandon Janeway

This year gave us some amazing games, including a handful of free-to-play games for PC. We came up with 7 games that we think are the best free-to-play PC games released in 2017.

Hand of the Gods

Hand of the Gods: SMITE Tactics is for anyone who is a fan of Hearthstone or who wants to play a strategic card game. Mixing the style of SMITE with that of turned-based card games, the game itself is free and only has players pay for additional content if they want to. Additional content comes in the form of card packs and exclusive items, but otherwise, the game can be played without spending a penny. Hand of the Gods is available here.

Fortnite

Fortnite is a co-op multiplayer survival game with PvE and PvP modes. The PvE campaign requires payment, but Fortnite is at its best in its PvP survival mode. This is a 100-person battle royale on a single map, with unique combat mechanics and environmental features. The PvP alone makes it a great game. You can play Fortnite here.

Dauntless

Dauntless is a co-op, action role-playing game where players team up to battle fearsome monsters and reap rewards. You can craft powerful weapons from your hunts and use them to take down your next kill. There are numerous weapon types to chose from, and the grim setting does a lot for the game's atmosphere. Dauntless is currently in open access, and you can access it here.

Total War: ARENA

If you are looking for a strategy game that utilizes team mechanics, Total War: ARENA should be on your radar. It thrusts two teams onto an ancient battlefield to take part in large-scale warfare. Your team will need to make use of all its resources in order to take down the enemy army. Total War: ARENA is available in early access here.

Lost Ark

Lost Ark is a new action-oriented MMO with a beautiful fantasy setting. The game utilizes a non-targeting combat system and a quarter-view angle to intensify the action and provide a more dynamic feel. If you are a fan of Diablo, or if you're looking for a new MMO, this game may be for you. You can play Lost Ark here

Black Squad

If you want a free-to-play first-person shooter, then check out Black Squad. The game has a standard premise of CIA vs terrorist cell, but it's a nice break from typical first-person shooters. Black Squad is very free-to-play friendly and very easy to jump into, even if you have never played an FPS before. To play Black Squad, go here.

GWENT: The Witcher Card Game

If you are a fan of The Witcher franchise, then GWENT may be calling your name. A strategy-based card game set in the fantasy world of The Witcher, GWENT has a promising eSports field and deep mechanics that allow for a lot of player freedom. The game is currently in open beta, and you can access it here.

These were our top picks for the best free-to-play PC games released in 2017. Let us know in the comments what free-to-play game you are playing this year.

Dark Souls III: Transitory Lands

\n

Download this theme on the PlayStation Store

\n

Here's on for the Dark Souls fan! Saying this theme is dynamic carries a double meaning, as it's probably the most dynamic of the lot. It features your hero walking across what looks like old linen (or maybe parchment). He comes across various environments as he progresses, all of which look like old engraved images, and their deep blackness throws their intricate details into sharp relief against the rest of the scenery. They vary, too, so it's almost entertainment in itself.

When it comes to PS4 themes, it's definitely not true that you get what you pay for. There is a wide variety of free themes just waiting to find their new home on your console, whether you're a fan of RPGs, platformers, sci-fi, or fantasy.

\n

Let us know in the comments which ones you plan on downloading or which ones you'd like to see added to this list!

The Witcher 3: Geralt and Ciri

\n

Download this theme on the PlayStation Store

\n

How is it possible to capture the essence of an entire trilogy and its themes in just one image? Like this. The Ciri and Geralt theme from The Witcher 3 manages to convey the folklore and high-fantasy elements of the entire series through two of the game's most important characters. This particular image from the theme emphasizes Ciri's determination and independence, which, in turn, helps make the game itself stand out. That determination is yours to shape through your in-game choices, an ambitious undertaking on the developer's part that works oh-so-well in action.

Van Helsing

\n

Download this theme on the PlayStation Store

\n

This Van Helsing theme's not just for fans of vampire lore. The game itself combined a wide variety of concepts in an ambitious attempt to merge folklore with science -- adding a touch of RPG goodness to round it all out. The theme conveys those concepts very well.

\n

Apart from the titular hero, you've got a rather bizarre, alien-looking creature and a sinister robot, while giant clockwork dominates the background. The parchment-themed icons add a nice touch too. It's another one that's especially suitable for a Halloween theme, but fans of what goes bump in the night and Diablo-style RPGs can enjoy it year-round.

Poi

Here's another one for explorers to check out. The Poi dynamic theme brings with it the bright colors and cheerful cartoon aesthetic of the game itself. Each screen depicts one of the principal characters in a characteristic pose, set against a bright backdrop. It's an excellent way to page homage not just to the game itself, but to the genre it represents, one that -- for many -- formed an important part of our early gaming years. If you're in need of a break from the grittier side of gaming, or just want to be reminded of your platforming days of yesteryear, you could do far worse than this.

RiME

\n

Download this theme on the PlayStation Store

\n

That's not all on offer from Grey Box, though. The RiME dynamic theme comes close to one-upping its predecessor. It focuses on the beach from the game's opening scenes, but that's not all. You'll hear the sounds of the waves and gulls, along with being greeted by your ever-present, friendly fox guide. It does a fine job of transferring the game's sense of wonder and the urge to explore into just one scene, and you may be hard-pressed to actually navigate away from it to choose a game.

Dreadnought: Sinley Bay

\n

Download this theme on the PlayStation Store

\n

Here's another theme to satisfy the sci-fi lover in you -- Sinley Bay from the tactical space game Dreadnought. This, too, is a dynamic theme.

\n

Stare into the endless depths of space, and as you scroll through your menu options, you'll see ships cruising slowly by. Combined with the subtle space tones in the background, it really creates an atmosphere equal parts wonder and isolation. That feeling will resonate particularly well with fans of the game since Sinley Bay is where the war-weary renegades train their future leaders to ensure the solar system's freedom -- not a bad little motivator to get you started with whatever game you choose.

Star Wars Battlefront: Leia Organa

\n

Download this theme on the PlayStation Store

\n

And one more Star Wars theme. We know it doesn't look like the "real" Leia Organa, but there's still quite a bit to love about this zooming dynamic theme. It forgoes the flashiness of the Jakku theme in favor of a toned-down approach that lets Leia's determination shine through. Plus, it hearkens back to one of the most memorable moments in the original Star Wars films, with the Imperial siege on Hoth.

Star Wars Battlefront: Battle of Jakku

\n

Download this theme on the PlayStation Store

\n

Here's another one that's sure to please fantasy fans. It draws on the exclusive Battlefront packaging that explores the important lore behind The Force Awakens, connecting the original and new trilogies. Despite its connection to the latest films, it's got something for everyone to enjoy, from TIE Fighters and X-Wings for those faithful to the originals, to the raw fan appeal of such an awesome conflict between Empire and Republic that never could have happened in the first three films. (And, by far the best for some, there's nothing to connect it to the prequel trilogy).

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies

\n

Download this theme on the PlayStation Store

\n

Tolkien fans rejoice! The Hobbit still has a free theme on the PlayStation store. And it's a darn good one, too. Azog the Defiler takes center stage -- well, right-center if you want to be technical - -in the depiction of the slow, tense build to the film's climactic final battle. However, in the background, you're also treated to the sight of Esgaroth on fire, with Smaugh above. Sure, it's not the happiest of scenes -- but it looks amazing.

Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensword

\n

Download this theme on the PlayStation Store

\n

This Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensword theme offers up a more traditional look in more ways than one. As you can see, it focuses on a dragoon, which, apart from being an important class in FFXIV in general, is one of the series' oldest and most well-known character classes -- thanks in part to FFIV's Kain. More importantly, though, it gives you the chance to admire Akihiko Yoshida's fantastic artwork close up, bridging the gap between the olden days of Final Fantasy and the modern.

Nioh Yokai Theme

\n

Download this theme on the PlayStation Store

\n

This Nioh theme might just essentially be the game's boxart plus a monster. But it's pretty good art, nonetheless. That's because it manages to give you a distinct impression of what the game's all about. The gear and coloration leave no doubt as to combat's central role in the game -- if you had doubts, given that it's a Koei game -- and the otherworldly glaze of Nioh's eyes suggesting that something out of the ordinary will play a significant role in plot and characterization. It provides a bit of intensity for your background and proves the old saying that simple is often best.

Everybody's Golf

Download this theme on the PlayStation Store

If you're looking for something a bit brighter, consider checking out this cheerful Everybody's Golf dynamic theme. It changes scenes depending on which menu you are working with at the time, from the primary one you see here -- complete with golf ball being driven right at you -- to a more urban scene, and a desert course as well. It's a good way to show off the game's cheerful colors and quirky characters juxtaposed in the realistic looking courses. Plus, it's just fun in general.

A Rose in the Twilight

This free PS4 theme might be static, but that doesn't keep it from being wonderful to look at. It perfectly captures A Rose in the Twilight's unique art style - -which is more than enough to recommend it. However, it also manages to convey the game's key themes as well, from the main character's general vulnerability and her giant companion's impressive strength to the narrative importance of the color red streaking through the mysterious castle. It's fitting for a Halloween theme, but definitely worthwhile year round.

This free dynamic PS4 theme showcases the natural beauty of Dishonored 2's main setting. It's not the view you normally see while playing, but it is one of the most iconic views of the game, nonetheless. Eschewing the touristy glitz of the main city, this theme focuses on the gently flowing water and the slowly turning windmills instead. It's a nice break from the intense action of the game itself, but the muted tones go far in setting a nice aura for whatever game you're about to play.

Best of PAX South: Dreadnought captivates https://www.gameskinny.com/8ofm4/best-of-pax-south-dreadnought-captivates https://www.gameskinny.com/8ofm4/best-of-pax-south-dreadnought-captivates Mon, 01 Feb 2016 18:36:43 -0500 Lad Johnson

PAX South was full of games and developers all gunning for the spotlight. There were lots of great titles, but none of them captivated me like Dreadnought did. Developed by Greybox and Yager studios, Dreadnought isn’t just another space combat simulator. In an age of swords, guns, and zombies Dreadnought is bringing sci-fi back to gaming. And pretty soon, it will be available for beta testing.

In the game, you are the commander of a gargantuan battleship in an ever-expanding sci-fi universe. Choose between five ship classes with varying abilities. Move around in quick bursts while tanking, or zoom around with torpedoes and turrets. Configuring your ships takes no time at all. There are so many options and ways to build out your ship you can be ready for every contingency.

dreadnought tank

In Dreadnought, you are the commander of a gargantuan battleship in an ever-expanding sci-fi universe.
Gameplay is very strategic

Pinned down and can’t escape? Move your ship's power from thrusters to shields. Has your artillery cruiser lined up that perfect shot? Go ahead and put all your juice into your weapons. Everything is up to you. You command all the functions of your ship, and it's great. For a strategy title, it is really easy to pick up and learn.

The controls are smooth and responsive, but it isn't like Star Wars or other space combat games. Most of the game's core ships aren’t all that fast. The namesake -- Dreadnought -- is actually a slow moving tank with massive weapon potential. The strategy here is in the placement. Moving your ship into effective range to demolish the enemy can be daunting. But teamwork can make this a cinch when applied well.

Dreadnought, PAX South, gaming

My only PAX regret is not spending more time with Dreadnought. Getting hands on at their media room was the height of the weekend. And I don't think anybody is as excited about the project as the team themselves. I spoke with one of the project's Creative Directors while I played.

He explained the team's vision and the long-term development plans for Dreadnought. Their philosophy is simple: be good to the community and they'll stay with the game.

Dreadnought, corvette, space, starship
No lone player has the advantage

Dreadnought is designed so that veteran players won’t be able to wipe out anyone new to the game. The longer you play, the more variety you will have. But that's just variety. New players are encouraged to try everything when they start playing. There is so much available from the start, yet finding out what your favorite ship or play style is in the first few rounds of playing is expected.

How and what you play is important. Dreadnought cannot be won alone. There is no single ship or player that can decide a match on their own. An artillery cruiser is unlikely to defeat a corvette by itself. But with some help from a destroyer or a Tac cruiser, the game changes. Watching the map and planning is the only path to victory.

Dreadnought is entering beta soon. I'm sure the developer got hundreds of sign-ups from PAX alone. Of all the games on the show floor, I'd say Dreadnought had the most presence. It was big, loud, and gorgeous. Beta signups are available here.

Have you had a chance to try Dreadnought? Are you waiting to get your hands on it? Let us know down in the comments!

The above is an all-new gameplay video from Grey Box and YAGER -- the folks behind the upcoming aerial arcade game Dreadnought. Gameplay in this trailer is primarily focused on the 5v5 team deathmatch, with all five ship classes viewable throughout the video.

Commentary is provided by Director Peter Holzapfel and Designer Einos Joas.

Interested? The YAGER team will be doing an AMA on Reddit Thursday, November 6.
