PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, also known as PUBG, is a first-to-third-person MMO shooter currently on Steam Early Access that features survival elements in a battle royal environment. The game is based on mods for the tactical military shooter Arma 2, specifically the Day Z: Battle Royale mod, created by Brendan “PlayerUnknown” Greene. While PUBG shares elements and mechanics from both the Arma franchise and the Arma spinoff H1Z1, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds takes the realism of Arma and the arcade-like nature of H1Z1 to new heights by adding its own unique recipe to the FPS/TPS mix. Battling it out on a 5x5-mile island, up to 100 players are able to parachute into the warzone to search for and find weapons, armor, vehicles, and other equipment scattered around the map. As rounds lengthen, players are forced to specific zones around the map, bringing them closer to other players and increasing the chances of conflict. Since its release on Steam for Windows in March 2017, PUBG has been an incredible success with the online gaming community, making more than $11 million in its first three days of Early Access. Since then, the game has grown even larger, bringing in thousands of players from around the world -- eiyh many taking to YouTube and Twitch to broadcast insane highlights involving frying pans, sniper rifles, crossbows, and even fisticuffs.
