With only a few days left to go before gamers can get their hands on Injustice 2, the next big release from Netherrealm Studios, the developer has released a beefy new trailer packed full of goodies.

The trailer gives us a sneak peek of the game's story mode, as well as a number of other modes, including a Multiverse mode. In the same vein as the towers mode from Mortal Kombat X, this mode takes players through hourly, daily, and weekly challenges that add modifiers to Injustice 2's gameplay. Ranking up increases player rewards, but it also increases the challenge.

On top of that, up to 50 people can form their very own guild to gain extra rewards. Guilds will be able to climb the leaderboards, gain experience faster, and earn exclusive rewards packages.

The final addition is Injustice 2's mobile experience. This allows players to play the game via their phones -- with all of the gear from the main game, alongside extra rewards. Unlocking character shards also gives players access to brand new talents, expanding the playability of Injustice 2.

Injustice 2 launches on May 16th. Will you be picking it up? Let us know your thoughts on the game in the comments below!

Injustice 2: DLC Characters Revealed, More Teased https://www.gameskinny.com/nnpiv/injustice-2-dlc-characters-revealed-more-teased https://www.gameskinny.com/nnpiv/injustice-2-dlc-characters-revealed-more-teased Sat, 06 May 2017 15:05:41 -0400 Curtis Dillon

Warner Bros. and DC have revealed the first of nine fighters to join Injustice 2 in post-launch DLC: Starfire, Red Hood, and Sub-Zero. The fighters were revealed alongside a new trailer, which also showcased the characters' weapons and outfits.

Sub-Zero finds his way into the DC roster much like Scorpion did in the original Injustice: Gods Among Us -- the third DLC character, preceded by Lobo and Batgirl.

Red Hood joins the rest of the Bat-family, including Batman, Robin, Scarecrow, Joker, Bane, Catwoman, Deadshot, Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn, making for a very Batman-heavy roster. And finally, there's Starfire, who comes as one of the most requested fighters from the entire DC Universe.

This first fighter DLC pack will be included in the $80 Injustice 2 Digital Deluxe Edition, which also includes a Premiere Skin and an exclusive Gear Shader. Meanwhile, the Injustice 2 Ultimate Edition, priced at $100, will feature a total of nine DLC characters, as well as three Premier Skins and two exclusive Gear Shaders. Of course, you can always wait and get the game a year from release for $60 with all the DLC, but that's up to you.

Featured at the end of the trailer, the image above teases the next two DLC packs, both of which include three more fighters.

Fans have been quick to point out the two obvious middle choices from both packs: Black Manta (left) and Raiden (right). The identity of the other four fighters is quite the mystery, although many believe the two on the right to be Beast Boy and Raven, thus allowing players to play as all of the original Teen Titans.

Injustice 2 launches for PS4 and Xbox One on May 16. No release date for the DLC has been revealed by NeatherRealm Studios as of yet.

Who do you think the mystery fighters are? Let us know in the comments!

Top 5 Comic Book Characters that Deserve Their Own Game https://www.gameskinny.com/gs0ep/top-5-comic-book-characters-that-deserve-their-own-game https://www.gameskinny.com/gs0ep/top-5-comic-book-characters-that-deserve-their-own-game Tue, 10 Jan 2017 07:00:02 -0500 Zach Long

I realize that 4 of 5 are DC heroes, but hey, they deserve some love too. I hope you enjoyed my trip of heroes that I think deserve the proper video game treatment. Maybe with the success of comic book movies, we'll get some great comic book games.

Let me know in the comments if you agree with my list. If not, who do you think should be included?

Green Lantern

Now this is the one I most want to see done well. Green Lantern, in any iteration, is my favorite DC Comics character. Whether it's Hal Jordan and his endless rivalry with Sinestro, or the latest duo of Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz, there are tons of great characters and stories to pull from. Imagine racing through space defending the galaxy from earth and utilizing the all-powerful Lantern Ring.

Heck, you could pull in all the other Lantern Corps and make a MMO out of it. Let the player choose their preferred color, or allow them to take a quiz to determine what they should play as, since the ring does choose the lantern after all.

Now this is a bit of an odd choice, I admit, but Constantine makes for a great character. There are tons of great stories you could have too, like the Trinity of Evil storyline. The gameplay would be similar to games like Heavy Rain, solving puzzles using mystical devices. Plus you have a great cast of sidekicks that need his help.

It's always fun playing a jerk sometimes too.

Teen Titans

I realize that this is more a group than it is a single character, but they deserve some video game love. You could have almost any roster. With that, it could bring back the style of the great PS2-era games X-Men Legends and X-Men Legends 2. Give me some online and couch co-op and let me play as Beast Boy, changing from a shark solving a puzzle to a gorilla smashing some baddies.

You could also have an unlock system where you have to help other members with missions before they become a playable character. Think of all the DLC you could have.

The Flash

Sticking with popular superheroes, The Flash TV series is doing exceptionally well, and this game could play off of that popularity. Sure, it may be a little bit harder to develop this game, but I think it could be great.

You play half the game as crime lab specialist Barry Allen, searching for clues a la L.A. Noire and then, once you have a lead, you race through the city and fight bad guys. You could even have side quests where you help out the fire department and police department throughout Star City. The controls would just need to be slightly tweaked from DC Universe Online and you'd have some great gameplay to boot.

Captain America

With the popularity of Marvel movies and war games, the time is ripe for a proper Captain America game. Just think about it; you're in the thick of WWII as a super soldier. You are working your way through a tactical world trying to find Hydra's home base. You can visit classic scenes from the war with new eyes and completely different gameplay from most war games.

Flip around and throw your shield, throw cars and tanks and use the occasional pistol in a pinch. The mechanics are pretty simple to tweak to make right for the character. That's the only way I want a WWII game to come back, honestly: if you play as Captain America.

Comic books are a great source of visual media. Not only do they have great action scenes and immersive stories, but they often build a vibrant universe all their own.

And what does that mean? It means that many of these universes and stories are perfect for video games. The stories are definitely there to be told, and the mechanics could definitely be worked out, so long as they are made with the passion and skill of an Arkham game (man, doesn't the new Spiderman game look great?)

So, without further ado, here's our list of the top 5 comic books characters that should have their own game.

The Best Superhero Games You Should Play https://www.gameskinny.com/d1php/the-best-superhero-games-you-should-play https://www.gameskinny.com/d1php/the-best-superhero-games-you-should-play Wed, 30 Nov 2016 07:00:01 -0500 EdWade

With so many superhero movies out at the moment and a ton still yet to come in 2017, superheroes are well and truly in! Marvel started off the whole trend, with the initial release of Iron Man. For fans of the comics it was set to be a dream come true, as whole host of heroes were set to make their big screen debuts. DC then decided to take things into their own hands and went on to do a ‘Marvel’ of their own. The two companies now have a whole host of films already set to come out in the next few years.

With comic book franchises coming out left, right and centre, games have also been flowing out. So, which ones have been the best, from past experience turning a movie into a game is never easy.

Lego Marvel Superheroes

The Lego games have already proved that just about everything is better in brick! They started off with Star Wars Lego, but things certainly reached a new level with the Marvel games. Given a free world to roam in, with a whole host of characters, make it a relaxing fun game. With so many different characters available, the game works in a very similar way to the movies, making every one of them feel important.

For those hoping for a serious intense game, don’t go any further, but for those hoping for some simple fun, with some great puns, this is the game for you. There is simply nothing more satisfying than smashing things up with Thor’s Hammer!

Injustice God’s Among Us

Ever thought what would happen if the biggest heroes and villains of the DC Universe would fight each other? Although Superman Vs Batman has pretty much answered those questions for us, here is the perfect chance for you to test things out for yourself. The story in Injustice God’s Among Us revolves around an alternate timeline in where Superman actually decided to murder the Joker, bringing in an age in which heroes are almost tyrannical, with the power having gone to their head.

Injustice God’s Among Us is a fantastic fighting game, one which is definitely for the fans. It has so many heavy and satisfying attacks, as well as a wealth of unlockable alternate costumes, which will only whet the appetite of DC supporters.

Batman Arkham Knight

Batman is arguably DC’s biggest and best superhero, so a top quality game was only going to add to his legacy. Arkham Knight is the pinnacle of the Arkham series and is exactly the sort of Batman game that fans want. It’s dark, gritty and violent, everything which the caped crusader is about!

Batman’s skills are well honed and the fighting is well co-ordinated with lots of good combos, in order to complete satisfying moves. It’s great to be able to get some of the other characters involved, with the opportunity for Batgirl or Robin to join you. It’s a great way to round off Batman’s best ever game -- even with the PC issues.

X-Men Origins Wolverine

Much like Arkham Knight is a perfect Batman game, this is undoubtedly a perfect Wolverine game. It feels like it’s made for the hardcore fans and not for the general comic book follower. Full of gore and anger, it’s a game that is all about Wolverine.

Given a rating of an 18, it doesn’t hold back, allowing you to fully unleash the Wolverine. With a great range of kill moves, it fits into how the movies have worked. With so many Marvel films being made for family consumption, it’s refreshing to get a game which genuinely doesn’t hold back.

Spider-Man Web Of Shadows

There have been tons of good Spiderman games, arguably the most famous comic book character of all time. The web slinging, crime fighting youngster has been a huge hit on the big screen and has been just as successful in the gaming world.

Web Of Shadows has to be the best though. It’s got the best graphics and gameplay, and is a fantastic all round package.

The game has lot’s of great Spidey features, with a fantastic real life looking Manhattan. Brilliant combat moves, with some really great Spiderman powers. It also finally properly pits you against the hero’s ultimate enemy, Venom.

There have been a whole host of great superhero games, not all of them even DC or Marvel! But based on purity for the fans, surely these have to be the best? Providing fans with characterizations, and storylines which stay true to the characters in the comic books.

Young Justice Finally Returns for a Third Season https://www.gameskinny.com/1m0ku/young-justice-finally-returns-for-a-third-season https://www.gameskinny.com/1m0ku/young-justice-finally-returns-for-a-third-season Tue, 08 Nov 2016 07:10:15 -0500 J Nicole Miller

Young Justice, cancelled after only two seasons in 2013, is coming back for a third season. The animated DC superhero show, which focused on the young partners (“Don’t call us sidekicks!”) of Justice League members, aired on Cartoon Network from 2011-2013.

Members of the original team’s lineup included Robin, Kid Flash, Aqualad, Superboy, Miss Martian, and Artemis, with Zatanna making a cameo or two. With Season Two, there were some alterations to the team roster, with Dick Grayson stepping up from Robin to his adult hero persona (Nightwing) and taking over the team, while Tim Drake -- the third person to hold the title of Robin -- joined the team along with Batgirl, Bumblebee, Wonder Girl, Beast Boy, Blue Beetle, and numerous other comic book favorites.

Despite a strong and passionate fanbase, the show was cancelled due to disappointing merchandise sales. This seems to have been more because of the type of merchandise being sold rather than a lack of interest. As the show was geared toward an older audience, the line of action figures and other such toys aimed at younger children probably wasn’t the best choice.

And who can forget Young Justice: Legacy, the tie-in video game which was pulled from two of the consoles (Wii and Wii U) it was originally supposed to be released for due to everything from "quality issues" to lack of retailer interest. That ill-fated game quickly found its way into Wal-Mart bargin bins everywhere, which certainly didn't help the fate of the show and its merch sales. Maybe this time around the merchandising will be more appropriate to their audience. Or at least a better video game tie-in.

Producer Greg Weisman has remained active in the Young Justice fandom, answering questions here and there, but ultimately keeping a lot of further information about “what happens next” top secret, as the dream has always been to produce a third season of the show. Now, it seems, that dream has become reality -- and aren’t we glad he didn’t spoil it all before it could begin?

Weisman, along with fellow original producer Brandon Vietti, will return to helm Season Three. It has not been announced whether Young Justice will air on Cartoon Network as it did previously or if it will find a new home elsewhere. Seasons one and two are both currently available for streaming on Netflix.

There never seems to be a sunny day in Gotham

[Warning: This review does contain spoilers]

In this latest rendition in the Batman Arkham series, you are in the great city of Gotham facing down the fiercest of foes after the death of the beloved Joker. After his death in Arkham City, all hell breaks loose in Gotham when Scarecrow assembles an army to go out and kill the Batman -- with the help of the mysterious Arkham Knight, a highly skilled and elite warrior in the militia's ranks who seems to know everything about the Dark Knight.

With the entirety of Gotham in danger, the Dark Knight calls in his most trusted weapon, the Batmobile. That's right -- you get to ride around and blow stuff up with this tank of a car, which just keeps getting stronger in the game. Right off the bat, you get to see Batman call down the Batwing, which drops off the car. (I find this a bit strange -- I mean, if I could use a jet with tons of weapons mounted on it, I probably would).

The game is filled with suspense and a lot of mini heart attack giving scenes, such as...

The Joker shows up and seems to be a bit clingy to Batman. This appearance completely changes everything. And from then on the game is filled with a sense of, What?... How?... When?... Who?... Why?.. Where?.. that keeps the player on the edge of their bean bag chair. (By the way, in the intro scene where Joker is being cremated, let the song finish before you hit the button. Trust me, do it.)

The gameplay is just like the previous games, and it evens incorporates the previous key combos, as well all of the old gadgets. This creates seamless experience for new and old players alike. A lot of these gadgets and tactics truly enhance the gameplay and the challenge.

Along with bringing back the old gadgets, all the old villains are back in town, too. Even the Riddler had time to set up all of his riddles and trophies all over Gotham, along with some unsavory bombs inside of rioters.

In Batman Arkham Knight, all of the Bat family is together and working alongside each other. In Gotham, you get to have assisted take-downs and team-ups with Robin, Nightwing, Batgirl/Oracle and even the Batmobile. This takes ass-kicking to a whole new level without having to buy all of those pesky DLCs (even though they are kinda worth it). Not only do you get to join the Batfamily in missions, you can also change the appearance of Batman and all of the others (Including the Batmobile) through DLCs and awards.

A lot happens in one night in Gotham. If you have the previous games, look out for Calendar Man and other side villains, because they give a bit of insight into the story-line. And most importantly, be the Batman.

Marvel has plans for high-quality console games https://www.gameskinny.com/bd1aa/marvel-has-plans-for-high-quality-console-games https://www.gameskinny.com/bd1aa/marvel-has-plans-for-high-quality-console-games Wed, 15 Jul 2015 05:36:48 -0400 Curtis Dillon

At a San Diego Comic Con panel, Marvel Games Producer Mike Jones said more Marvel console games are coming, eventually.

A fan asked Jones about any new details on the console gaming front. The fan asked if Marvel are searching for new development partners, considering the company's licensing deal with Activision expired January last year. The two companies had been making games together since 1986, with Howard the Duck on the Commodore 64Jones confirmed that gears are turning on the console front:

"We are very much focused on what our console strategy will be for the future. Obviously console games take a lot longer to incubate, so that will be a slower process for us."

The latest Marvel console games have been with LEGO and Disney Infinity, which are not the AAA experiences fans desire. Marvel fans are clamoring for something akin to Batman: Arkham Knight. The last dedicated superhero game from Activision was The Amazing Spider-Man 2, a movie tie-in, and a poorly received one at that. Before that was Deadpool in 2013, which got fairly positive reviews but didn't blow anyone away.

Marvel, of course, is being quite prolific with mobile gaming these days, releasing 8 dedicated Android and iOS games in the past 2 years. Fans have been disappointed at the lack of development time given to studios working on console games, especially with the Amazing Spider-Man movie tie-ins that were rushed to coincide with the movie release. Activision also had a tendency to focus of Spidey more than any other hero - Thor, Iron Man, and Captain America all got little more than one-off awful movie tie-ins.

After years of mediocre Batman games, DC took a different approach to its most popular hero and gave the property to Rocksteady. They spent 3-4 years making Arkham Asylum. which spawned an iconic series and redefined superhero games. Thankfully it seems like Marvel are taking the same approach going forward:

"We are very much taking a controlled, less-is-more, quality-focused, developer-focused strategy, but it is very top of mind, and we'll have a lot more announcements probably next year."

The possibility of a truly great game featuring one (or more) of Marvel's heroes is an exciting one indeed. The good news is, we already know of one upcoming Marvel game that is being made by a very talented studio. We still don't know which character that game will be about, but expect more news in 2016. Until then, check out our list of Marvel heroes that deserve a great game!

Red Bull Brings Starcraft 2 Legacy Of The Void To The Main Stage https://www.gameskinny.com/fs295/red-bull-brings-starcraft-2-legacy-of-the-void-to-the-main-stage https://www.gameskinny.com/fs295/red-bull-brings-starcraft-2-legacy-of-the-void-to-the-main-stage Thu, 25 Jun 2015 19:20:38 -0400 Ryan Mayle

I didn't think it would happen, but Red Bull found a way to bring Starcraft 2 back to the main stage - and on top of that, they're doing it in a 2v2 style tournament.  Red Bull Media House has officially announced that the Red Bull Battle Grounds Grand Finals will be returning to Washington D.C. on September 19th. At this event, the top players from the Battle Grounds qualifiers will play for a $30,000 prize.

From past experience, the production quality of the Starcraft 2 Battle Grounds series has been top-notch, creating an excellent experience both live and on stream. However, this is only half the excitement I am harboring for this event. I have been waiting years to see competitive 2v2 matches for Starcraft 2, but even better - they will be competing with Blizzard's new Archon Mode.

Archon Mode is a new game mode added specifically for Legacy of the Void where two players control one base. So balance for 2v2 matches won't be more difficult, as it will still be balanced as normal. For a quick explanation check out this handy video.

Will the Arkham Series Continue Past Arkham Knight? https://www.gameskinny.com/gyofy/will-the-arkham-series-continue-past-arkham-knight https://www.gameskinny.com/gyofy/will-the-arkham-series-continue-past-arkham-knight Tue, 17 Mar 2015 08:51:17 -0400 Casey Bowker

We're all eagerly anticipating the 'end' of the Arkham Series. Well, I suppose I can't say that we're excited to see it go, but I for one, can't wait for Arkham Knight to be finally released this June after its delay from last October. The game is reported to be the finale of the series.

I have to ask, "Is this really the end?"

The games are wildly popular and have spawned comics, toys, and a DC Animated Movie that pays serious homages to the games. Given that the franchise it making DC and Warner Bros. a ton of money, I feel that they won't really let the series die.

So, what exactly will happen with The Dark Knight? I believe that we will see more Arkham games, but we will see them in the period after Origins and before Asylum. I felt that Roger Craig Smith did a great job in voicing the role of Bats, albeit, it's a far cry from Kevin Conroy. Nothing against Smith at all; but when I hear the voice of Batman, I hear Conroy.

There are more stories that could be told in the early stages of the Caped Crusader, and I think the fans would love to see those. Maybe we could even go before Origins for a Year One story? We could even go way into the future and see a game that's based on Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns. I know that I'd love to see older Bruce Wayne on a horse, leading his team of vigilantes into the streets of Gotham.

With such a rich history for the character and countless stories to draw off from, do YOU really think this is the end for Batman?

Warner Bros Interactive released the third in their three-part installment of Batman: Arkham Knight videos that showcase a series of fight scenes involving one-on-one action and the Batmobile against an attack helicopter.

This latest video also looks at the PlayStation 4 exclusive DLC pack Scarecrow Nightmare Mission, wherein Gotham City falls victim to the nightmarish serum from supervillian Scarecrow.

The game will be the conclusion to a trilogy by Rocksteady games, who made the games Batman: Arkham City and Batman: Arkham Asylum. The Origins game was made by a separate developer.

Batman: Arkham Knight is set for release on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

Interview with Scarlett at Red Bull Battle Grounds Grand Finals https://www.gameskinny.com/c7fki/interview-with-scarlett-at-red-bull-battle-grounds-grand-finals https://www.gameskinny.com/c7fki/interview-with-scarlett-at-red-bull-battle-grounds-grand-finals Mon, 22 Sep 2014 18:46:31 -0400 Ryan Mayle

Canadian player Scarlett took Red Bull Battle Grounds by surprise, by demonstrating strong performance being the only native North American player in the top 8. She won over the crowd with unique and entertaining strategies. It was easy to see why she was a crowd favorite, with her non-traditional matches. In some cases risking it all, rushing a proxy hatchery in PartinG's base, forcing a quick victory. An interesting strategy considering she has never won a match against PartinG in the past. However, her plays got Scarlett a victory over PartinG 2-0. Though Cure went to play in the finals against Bomber, even he was shaken up and relieved to have won 2-1 against Scarlett. Scarlett was a force throughout the event, but it was Polt who knocked her out of the tournament earning her 5th/6th place overall.

Here's what Scarlett had to say after the event:

What's been your favorite part of Battle Grounds DC?

Red Bull takes really good care of the players. It's probably the best event for that. We get to see the city a little bit. We got to see the Washington Monument, that area and they give us food and everything and we get a very nice practice area back here. I really like how they take care of the players and the crowd has been great here. they've been cheering so loud, the crowd is completely full, they've been cheering the whole time.

What is it like to be a big crowd favorite?

It's very exciting, but it adds a little bit of pressure because, I'm the only non-Korean player, I'm the only North American here. So I feel a little more pressure to win, like if I lose a lot of people will be dissapointed in me.

How does this years Battle Grounds compare to last year's for you?

Well obviously I did a little better last year, but overall the events, they were both very very good. I don't know if I could say one was better than the other, the crowd were great both years, the production was great, they took care of the players amazingly. So both years were very great. I don't know if I could pick one to be better.

What's next for you?

I don't have too much planned this fall, this winter. I have WCS round of 8 in a few weeks in Los Angeles, but other than that I have nothing planned for awhile, just relaxing in Canada at home for awhile.

If you want to follow Scarlett, be sure to check out the schedule for the StarCraft World Championship Series here and if you missed the results of the Red Bull Battle Grounds Grand Finals, you can see those here.

Red Bull Battle Grounds DC has finally finished. After months of online games and stops in three cities, there could be only one winner. The journey was long, there were many upsets, and close matches abounded. All players did their best and put on great shows. Bomber was able to snag first place in Atlanta, Polt was able to take first in Detroit. But it was Bomber who won it all this weekend in the nation's capital.

The results for the weekend are as follows:

  • 1st Place: Bomber
  • 2nd Place: Cure
  • 3rd Place: Polt
  • 4th Place: Trap
  • 5th-6th Place: sOs
  • 5th-6th Place: Scarlett
  • 7th-8th Place: DongRaeGu
  • 7th-8th Place: PartinG

For how well Bomber played, there was no doubt about him siezing the victory. Throughout the entire weekend he only lost two matches, both of these against Polt in a best of 5. One of these losses was due to some forgetful play, having medivacs full of units sitting unattended, and Bomber losing his entire army in a second. However, in the final series against Cure, Bomber was sure to send everyone home early. He took the victory in a 4-0 series.

Day 1 of Red Bull Battle Grounds Grand Finals has finished. There have been wild upsets, cheers, and crazy plays made by all. However, only four get to continue to compete tomorrow to be crowned champion.

Group AGroup B
Bomber Polt
Trap Cure
sOs Scarlett
DongRaeGu PartinG

The final scores in group A and B are as follows:

Group A:
  • Bomber (4-0)
  • Trap (4-2)
  • sOs (2-3)
  • DonRaeGu (0-4)
Group B:
  • Cure (4-2)
  • Polt (5-4)
  • Scarlett (4-4)
  • PartinG (1-4)

This leaves Bomber, Polt, Trap, and Cure to battle it out on championship Sunday. There's been an electrifying crowd at this event, with people cheering for everyone. It is difficult to say who will take the title of Red Bull Battle Grounds Grand Champion, but I sadly must say, it won't be a Zerg player.

The current fan favorite is Polt, victor at Battle Grounds Detroit. You can feel the excitement in the air everytime he makes a play. However, Bomber proves to be the greatest threat this late in the game. Bomber has yet to know defeat in DC and I am sure he is looking to keep it that way as tomorrow draws near.

Don't forget to keep up on the action live from Red Bull's Twitch stream.

Red Bull Battle Grounds their grand finals tournament in Washington, DC today. This is the final event that everyone has been working for, and everything is on the line. The 8 competitors for this weekend are:

Group AGroup B
Bomber Polt
Trap Cure
sOs Scarlett
DongRaeGu PartinG

Group A finished with the following results:

  • Bomber (4-0)
  • Trap (4-2)
  • sOs (2-4)
  • DonRaeGu (0-4)

Bomber and Trap will move foward in the competition to take on the top two challengers from Group B (competing this afternoon).

One common theme with Group A is that there have been no tie-matches yet. Every game has been decided with a 2-0 victory (or 2-0 loss).

The wins and losses may appear one-sided, but the many of the games themselves have been neck and neck. It's difficult to predict who will take home the championship win this weekend, but stick around and be sure to check out the action live.

Injustice: Gods Among Us Review https://www.gameskinny.com/tpqxt/injustice-gods-among-us-review https://www.gameskinny.com/tpqxt/injustice-gods-among-us-review Tue, 02 Sep 2014 14:36:50 -0400 Jay Prodigious

The DC Universe has always had the notion of multiple dimensions for all our favorite Heroes and Villains. Be it a separate universe where Superman didn't land in Smallville but rather Soviet Russia (Red Son) or Batman's Origin is slightly eschewed or even possibly the one Universe that Aquaman is important and interesting.

Injustice: Gods Among us toys with that theory and plugs heroes from one universe into another in order to change the results of one horrific event that all began with Joker and Superman. For all of the DC fans reading, you might see parallels from the movie "Crisis on Infinite Earths" in a lot of what goes on this campaign.

The concept is simple, as it is in every fighting game: your favorite characters are pitted against each other in what looks like a battle to the death (granted it's always just a knock. You live for now Aquaman, just wait until Blackest Night). The fights are all dictated by time as well as the basic health bars, pummel your opponent till his health is gone or just have more health than him/her for the time given. Nothing new about that what soever, so if you have played any fighting games before then you're a natural.

Each character has their own set of combos as well as a particular special finisher move. These moves range from being ran over by the Batmobile after Batman sticks you with a explosive bat-a-rang to The Flash circling the globe to deliver a devastatingly powerful jaw jacking followed by some follow up blows. They are only accessible after doing either of the following: beating your opponent a certain amount of time or, being beaten up severely by them. Sadly the easiest way to get it is to have the crap beaten out of you, as infuriating as it is to be dominated by a computer , the damage these Super moves delivers is worth a huge chunk of health. It works as a semi valid strategy, but gets rather tedious and can be a pain in the spandex when the second health bar doesn't get affected because of the programming, leaving you to deal with the remaining 0% of bar one. Yes it looks completely drained but if any damage is done past that point, it is null and void.

Along with these super moves each character gets a unique secondary as well. These can be accessed by using the Circle button and include anything from Wonder Woman switching from Lasso to Sword to Cyborg's healing ability. These secondaries bring a sense of skill to the linear battles (well kind of). Some moves don't act fast enough, and become hinderences to the main focus of the melee. These secondaries have cooldowns, except the weapon swaps, so it's recommended to use them sparingly and wisely. With a roster of 29 (that's including the DLC characters) you have plenty of options to test out who works best with you.

The campaign, which I touched upon lightly before, has an interesting story, pulling characters from what I assume is Universe Prime to one of the many alternates. Playing 12 chapters in total, each a different character, we get a broad idea of what is going on in both universes. We see cut scenes that show us what happens between the action, such as how those not pulled to the alt universe are handling the situation of the missing members of the JLA. Not to give anything away to the story I'll just summarize; in short this story feels like a trip I can only describe as "what would happen to a time traveler got stuck in an alternate time line"

Sure it seems like a stretch but it is more to the point than I could describe. The pulled heroes affect the new universe and have to deal with the changes with no real affect to the original universe. It's a brilliant idea and certainly I can respect it but the story could have been told so much better, maybe a better structure to the scenes of more in depth exploration to the trials the Prime Heroes had in the new universe, which was vaguely touched upon but never really fleshed out. Add to that the short 4 hour story time, it makes it rather disappointing.

As is the norm with any fighting game, AI is important, so it's safe to say I did my best to run the compute through its paces. Unfortunately the testing didn't have to take long for me to find faults. In most regards on a normal run, the computer tends to react like a basic player, intermediate but still skilled. What I mean by this is the computer has the idea to use environments to hurt you, does basic hitting and blocking, but if pressed ( and sometimes not) they will push you in the corner and spam the punch over and over again till you force yourself out of there. What's worse is the difficulty will ramp up at random intervals, either becoming a hardened veteran making it near impossible to win or becoming so weak that its no challenge at all. To comment on the latter, I had a fight where Catwoman just sat crouched for so long until I basically beat her into submission, I think I took all of two hits that fight. Not a great example of well functioning AI at all in this game.

Injustice looks beautiful in the costume designs and darker/grittier environments.

Graphics and sound were well done, graphics were gorgeous in some lights while in others it was left lackluster and weak, while the musical score and game sounds were constantly a breath of fresh air. Graphically, Injustice looks beautiful in the costume designs and darker/grittier environments. The fights, the cinematics, while not as well done as their counterparts were, still impressed to a point. The fighters copious amounts of alternate costumes were so well worked they stole the show and made all the fighters pop on the battlefield.

One thing I gushed over was just the design and metallic styling of Flash's suit, it stole the show for me in the end. Cinematics left a lot to be desired, sure some things looked brilliant in action scenes but when Superman used his heat vision, it ruined it. The styling looked like something from an old 80's game graphic and just made me laugh more than enjoy what was on the screen. I liked the cinematics for the most part, while decently stylized it became apparent that the battles looked better than the cut scenes. Blocky movements, cheesy illustrations of powers ( heat vision), and generic backgrounds, just made me realized the cincematics needed work.

While the environments in battle looks great on the surface, clean and polished, they were sadly empty in terms of anything not in the foreground. It was nice fighting in the dark back alley as Joker but when I noticed how little I saw of world there I was let down. Sure other levels picked it up, Church, Fortress of Solitude, JLA Hall outside and Watchtower had a few things in the background to distract but it felt like it was an add on just for background filler. The voice actors were well fit (while a non Mark Hamil was weird), they suit each character well, sounding heroic while at the same time sounding human on a good level. The voices weren't cheesy in the slightest and neither was the musical score, which was deep and emotional when it needed to be and kept he battles feeling fast paced and fierce.

The game has more outside the campaign, such as multiplayer or online battles, as well as challenges in a special fight mode. I didn't do too much outside of the campaign and some fights with a partner but I did notice they have a level system to your profile that gives you points to spend on bonuses such as concept art, new outfits, and music unlocked. The level system ran through the campaign so you should have been at level 33 by the end which gives you plenty of points to spend on cool extras, if you're not already tired of playing after the campaign.

Now here's a quick recap:

  • Story had potential but was bland at best
  • AI has split personalities (too difficult to brain dead) and was very buggy
  • Combat was basic and unique special moves proved entertaining for a little bit
  • Graphics and sound steal the show but still lacked some depth in graphics that was unforgivable (heat vision uck!)
  • Replay able easily with extra modes and online play (but not entertaining enough for me to come back)

I'm not much for fighting games and Injustice didn't overly impress me during my play time. It makes me think that fighting games just get away in the gaming universe by repeating the same formula. Did I enjoy the game? Sure, but will I go back and buy it or recommend it? Not a chance, unless you like fighting games, then I suggest at least trying it. Now if you could kill off Aquaman or Daimen Wayne version of Nightwing, then we'll talk.

Infinite Crisis - Closed Beta Impression https://www.gameskinny.com/vtir2/infinite-crisis-closed-beta-impression https://www.gameskinny.com/vtir2/infinite-crisis-closed-beta-impression Mon, 10 Mar 2014 13:38:25 -0400 Danielle Marie

For most gamers, hearing MOBA instantly invokes thoughts of League of Legends and Dota 2. However, there's a new MOBA being introduced to the scene, and it's ready to play with the big dogs.

Inspired by DC comic book characters, Infinite Crisis is a great mix of strategy, skill, and excitement. Rapidly approaching open beta on March 14th, IC is taking a rightful place in the esports community with emerging teams under Curse, compLexity, and more.

This is my impression of the game as of March 10th, 2014 which is the February 12th, 2014 patch.

Client Layout

After logging in, you are brought the to client's homepage (pictured above). Navigation is incredibly easy and Warner Bros. seems to have used most of the space wisely.

Players can use the "shop" button to buy champions, skins, and other player-specific goodies. There is a collapsable friends and notification list, featured purchasable deals, and a general chat for players to ask questions, join groups, or make friends.

Since most games are better with friends, the general chat poses as a great feature to the game. IC also keeps track of your personal profile where it logs your stats, acheivements, champions, and other personal goals you may have.

Infinite Crisis operates with 3D graphics and an overhead camera display. It currently features 3 playable game modes: Gotham Divided, Coast City Marina, and Gotham Heights.

Gotham Divided is a map with a jungle. top, mid and bottom lanes, very similar to Summoner's Rift in League of Legends. The object of this map is to push lanes, capture enemy turrets, and eventually to push to defeat the enemy's base.

Coast City Marina is very similar to Gotham Divided, except there is only a top and bottom lane with a lot of jungle to play around with in the middle.

Gotham Heights is equivalent to League of Legends' The Crystal Scar, or "Dominion." This map is essentially a game of king of the hill.

The question on my mind going into the game was this: "If this game is so much like League, and every other MOBA, why should I play it?" Well, there are actually really cool aspects of the game that are different from MOBA giant, League of Legends.

For example: if you miss a last hit on a minion, the gold has a chance to drop, which gives you a chance to pick up part of the lost gold you missed out on. You can also level up your champion's passive ability, and get buffs that freeze the entire enemy team in place.

Once I got the hang of the game, I loved the versatility of the 24 available champions. Being able to pick up and throw cars at your childhood hero is also pretty cool.

Playing the game about 5 months ago, I can honestly say the improvements to the overall performance are pretty significant.

Everything is much smoother, skill shots are much more accurate, and unit collision makes much more sense. The aesthetic details are also incredible. There's no doubt that Infinite Crisis' graphics are one of the best out right now, even in closed beta.

The maps are set in a grungy, urban, abandoned city-like atmosphere, which sounds very unappealing, but in actuality is pretty awesome. It appeals to the rebellious, comic-loving side in all of us.

If there's one thing League of Legends is infamous for, it's being a rage fest for worst tempers in gaming history. However, I found this community to be very helpful and compassionate. I asked a lot of questions. Normally I would expect be met with opposition, but my teammates answered generously from champ select through to the end screen.

Infinite Crisis gets a thumbs up from me. I got very addicted very quickly, and it's easy to see why. The game is beautifully designed, has a decent amount of champion depth, and has just enough differences to seperate it from the current MOBAs that are circulating today.

The only improvement I could see in IC's future is making the in-game store easier to use. All the icons are very busy and look exactly the same, and reading the descriptions is an eye-sore with such tiny text. If the shop was improved, however, the game would be close to perfect.

Plus, how cool is it beat up on Batman as The Joker?

Atomic Poison Ivy Roots Way Into Infinite Crisis https://www.gameskinny.com/2qlpt/atomic-poison-ivy-roots-way-into-infinite-crisis https://www.gameskinny.com/2qlpt/atomic-poison-ivy-roots-way-into-infinite-crisis Wed, 08 Jan 2014 11:58:54 -0500 Lauren Puga

As if upcoming DC Universe MOBA, Infinite Crisis, didn’t look awesome enough already, today it was announced that Atomic Poison Ivy would be added to the game’s ever-expanding Champion roster.

This definitely isn't the Poison Ivy we're familiar with. Atomic Poison Ivy exists in Infinite Crisis’s Atomic Universe, a post-apocalyptic world that features DC characters who endured a brutal nuclear war. Once the war ended, Pamela Isley woke up to find herself transformed into a terrifying human-plant hybrid and vowed to protect the earth from the humans that nearly destroyed it.

Equipped with roots and razor-sharp thorns, Atomic Poison Ivy will be joining the likes of Wonder Woman, Shazaam and Gaslight Joker as the role of Enforcer. Her skills include a number of AOE abilities and several moves that employ her passive: Toxic Growth.

Check out Atomic Poison Ivy in action in the video below.

Infinite Crisis is currently in closed beta, but expected to be released later this year.

News Flash: DC Comic's Barry Allen Gets a Standalone Pilot https://www.gameskinny.com/cw8rc/news-flash-dc-comics-barry-allen-gets-a-standalone-pilot https://www.gameskinny.com/cw8rc/news-flash-dc-comics-barry-allen-gets-a-standalone-pilot Mon, 18 Nov 2013 18:44:16 -0500 J Nicole Miller

Barry Allen, perhaps the most well-known of all speedsters who have called themselves the Flash, will be getting his own, standalone pilot on  the CW. As I mentioned in a previous article, superheroes are in the spotlight right now. Be it in movies, television, mini-series, merchandise, video games, or controversy superheroes are everywhere we turn. The CW capitalized on this with their show Arrow, featuring the DC Comics vigilante Green Arrow.

With its success in mind, the network decided to expand their superhero repertoire, likely to compete with ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D based on the government agency in Marvel Comics and its portrayal in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The hero selected for this expansion was DC’s Flash.

The Flash has long-since been a staple of DC as a member of the Justice Society of America in his original incarnation as Jay Garrick and later a founding member of the Justice League of America once the cowl was handed over to Barry Allen.

Originally, a three-episode arc of Arrow was slated to act as a backdoor pilot for a series about Barry Allen. However, once footage of these episodes was seen by network executives, the Flash was given his own standalone pilot. Barry will still appear in Arrow, but that arc will be focusing on his origin story with his costume making its first appearance in his own pilot, rather than in Arrow like the CW had originally planned.

Barry Allen will appear in episodes eight and nine of the second season of Arrow. These episodes will air on December 4 and December 11 of this year. He will be portrayed by Grant Gustin. The Flash series will be developed by the co-creators of Arrow (Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg), the Arrow pilot director (David Nutter), and the Chief Creative Officer of DC Comics (Geoff Johns).

While Barry Allen's appearances on Arrow have been filmed, Flash's pilot is still in the works.
