9 Ways to Prepare for Destiny 2: Lightfall

Lightfall will be here before you know it, so follow this guide to get the most out of your preparation.

The Lightfall expansion for Destiny 2 will be here before you know it, and while there is still some time before Guardians make their way to Neptune and Neomuna, there’s plenty you can do now to prepare for the expansion’s release.

Taking some time in the next month to finish out all the tasks we list here will not only ensure you’re ready to hit the ground running when Lightfall releases, but you’ll have both an experience and gear advantage going into the campaign and the World First Raid Race, should you be participating.

The nine tips we list here are the optimal strategies; doing even half of them will put you ahead of much of the player base. There are dozens of smaller tasks you can complete, but we’re covering the most valuable, and that will take you the most time. You’ll want to jump on these as soon as possible, as waiting much longer will push you into crunch time.

Destiny 2: Lightfall Prep Guide

Finish Seasonal and Previous Expansion Content

Image via Bungie

Come February 28 and Lightfall‘s release, all seasonal content from Seasons 16-19 (barring Dungeons and Raids) will disappear. That includes all H.E.L.M. vendors, activities, and reward systems. If you want to be up on the whole story going into Lightfall, you’ll want to complete the main story quests from all four Seasons to prep. Completing specific steps will also unlock the ability to earn Exotic weapons like the Revision Zero.

If you’re a Triumph and Title collector, you’ll also want to complete all of the Season 16-19 Seals. For a full rundown of what you need to do, visit bray.tech and link your Bungie account. You’ll be able to view all the Triumphs you need for the various Seasonal titles and the other Triumphs from Year 5.

Previous expansions (Shadowkeep, Beyond Light, The Witch Queen) will not be sunset, but completing their campaigns gives important narrative context and access to additional content.

Craft Seasonal Weapons

As an extension of the above point, you’ll want to craft as many Seasonal weapons as possible. There are many amazing options, some of which we’ve covered here, including Bump in the Night, Calus Mini-Tool, and Austringer — all from Season of the Haunted. Getting your hands on the following from Seasons of the Risen, Plunder, and Seraph is also worthwhile:

Season of the Risen Weapons to Craft

  • Explosive Personality Grenade Launcher
  • Piece of Mind Pulse Rifle
  • Thoughtless Sniper Rifle

Season of Plunder Weapons to Craft

  • Sailspy Pitchglass Linear Fusion Rifle
  • Tarnished Mettle Scout Rifle
  • No Reprieve Shotgun

Season of the Seraph Weapons to Craft

  • Fire and Forget Linear Fusion Rifle
  • Disparity Pulse Rifle
  • Judgment of Keogorath
  • Retrofit Escapade LMG
  • IKELOS_SMG_V1.0.3.

Complete Ada-1 Transmog Bounties

Each class can complete 15 of Ada-1’s Transmog bounties per Season, and if you want to add some new Lightfall fashion to your Universal Ornament collection, you’ll want as much Synth material as you can get.

Unlock the Armor You Want to Transmog

Every Season and expansion comes with a slew of activities that reward new armor pieces and sets. Like all other content, Seasonal armor will disappear at the end of the year, and there will be plenty of new options with the expansion. Take the time to unlock everything for every class, should you eventually want to find a use for it.

Grab Weapons, Armor, and Ornaments from the Season Pass

There are both Universal Ornaments and high-stat armor pieces on all of the Season Passes that you’ll want to grab if you haven’t already. You can also access previous Season Passes on Bungie.net.

You’ll also want to get the Seasonal Exotic from the various Passes, as some, like the Grand Overture, get major buffs that make them viable endgame DPS options. Grab their Catalysts while you’re at it as an extra preparation method.

Collect Exotic Engrams

Though Exotic engrams don’t drop often, we don’t recommend immediately picking them up. Instead, let them transfer to your Postmaster, as opening them during Lightfall has a small, but non-zero, chance of awarding a new Exotic from the expansion.

Collect Upgrade Materials

There is bound to be new equipment you’ll want to upgrade come Lightfall, and you’ll need plenty of upgrade materials to get them to max level. You can hold 40 Ascendant Shards and Ascendant Alloys across all your characters and their respective Postmasters. You’ll use these for Masterworking both standard Exotics and crafted weapons, respectively. Enhancement Prisms should also be on your list to collect, as you can hold a whopping 200.

Farm Exotics from Legend Lost Sectors

If you don’t have every Exotic armor piece currently available in Destiny 2, farming Legend and Master difficulty Lost Sectors is your best path to completing your Collections. Having everything unlocked will give you a clearer path to the new loot come the new expansion.

Hoard Weekly Bounties

For maximum experience gains, you’ll want to collect every Weekly and Daily non-repeatable Bounty your inventory will hold. The NPCs with them include:

  • Variks on Europa
  • Petra Venj in the Dreaming City
  • Shaw Han in the Cosmodrome
  • Eris Morn on the Moon
  • Starhorse in Eternity
  • Any Clan bounties you can complete from Saraya Hawthorn at the Tower

Vendors like Banshee, Zavala, Xur, and all the Destination NPCs also have Daily Bounties that are easy to do and will give you a good boost as well. They’re also more numerous. Prioritize Weeklies whenever you can, as the XP gains are well worth the time investment.

There are plenty of smaller tasks you can complete to prep for Lightfall and the ever-present need for Vault cleaning, but the nine tips presented here are by far the most valuable. We’ve covered plenty of other Destiny 2 content from expansions passed, and you’ll find all of it in our guides hub to the game.
