Baldur’s Gate 3: How to Find the Fourth Umbral Gem

Three gems are rewarded for completing trials, but where's the fourth Umbral Gem in Baldur's Gate 3?

Umbral Gems are required to progress through the Gauntlet of Shar in Act 2, but finding the fourth one can be a little tricky. Three of them are picked up from the trials you complete as you work towards Shadowheart’s goal of becoming a Dark Justiciar. In this guide we’ll go over how to find the fourth Umbral Gem in Baldur’s Gate 3.

How to Find the Fourth Umbral Gem in Baldur’s Gate 3

You can progress through most of the Gauntlet of Shar with three gems, but you need the fourth Umbral Gem to reach the last portion.

Before you can grab this Umbral Gem, you need to deal with Yurgir the Orthon. You might remember him as the object of Raphael’s request that he makes before you enter the mausoleum. Raphael wants him dead, but when you come face-to-face with Yurgir, you can choose to try finding a way to help him out of his contract with Raphael instead of killing him.

Find Yurgir and Kill or Help Him

You’ll find Yurgir’s room by going to the Gauntlet of Shar Waypoint, then turning right to head up the stairs. When you arrive, you might notice there’s an Umbral Gem sitting on the steps in Yurgir’s room below the large pile of bones. However, if you talked to him and agreed to help, but haven’t completed his quest yet, picking up the gem will trigger combat.

As such, you need to either kill Yurgir or dig into another way to break his contract with Raphael before you’re able to take the Umbral Gem. I found it easier to just kill him, and doing so makes Astarion happy since Raphael will then help you progress to the next objective for “The Pale Elf.”

It can take time depending on the method you use, but that’s how to find the fourth Umbral Gem in Baldur’s Gate 3. Because of the location, you could get it before you enter the rest of the gauntlet and continue to the end in one stretch.
