Baldur’s Gate 3: Investigate Last Light Inn Guide

Delve into the underground caverns beneath Baldur's Gate 3's Last Light Inn location.

The Investigate Last Light Inn quest in Baldur’s Gate 3 takes place as you learn about the Selunite Resistance and prepare to raid Moonrise. You can score some great loot and, more importantly, learn more about both Selune and Isobel. Here’s how to investigate Last Light Inn in BG3.

How to Complete the Investigate Last Light Inn Quest in Baldur’s Gate 3

The Investigate Last Light Inn BG3 quest is done in the underground cavern beneath the inn base of the Harpers. After talking to Mattis in Last Light and getting the Tower-shaped key from him, here’s a quick summary of the rest of the quest:

  • You can enter the caverns by way of the ruined house east of the Inn across the bridge or beneath the Inn via the Last Light Inn – Cellar door leading to the prison area with breakable walls.
  • This will get you into the sewers beneath Last Light where a dozen Meenlock creatures are lurking that you can fight or sneak past with Invisibility-based spells, potions, and class abilities (I just sent in an invisible Astarion).
  • Depending on the way you enter the sewers, there will be a Selune statue behind or in front of them holding a Halfred’s Note book-item that you need to read.
  • Now, you need to go to Reitwin Masons’ Guild south of Last Light, as on the map below.
  • Enter the Guild house, look for the Ornate Wooden Hatch, use the Tower-shaped key on the Keyholed Herald, defeat some Shadows with Light/Radiant spells in the dark hall, and read the Mason’s Log to complete the quest.

What to Do if Halfred’s Note Is Missing?

It might occur that you destroy Halfred’s Note with a stray Fireball spell or other destructive AOE ability. In such cases, simply go to the Mason’s Guild house in Reitwin and proceed as above to find the Mason’s Log, which completes the quest. You don’t actually need Halfred’s Note to finish this quest if you know the Mason’s Log location.

How to Reach the Cave Beneath Last Light Inn in BG3

For a specific walkthrough to investigate Last Light Inn and enter the cave beneath the inn, you can check out the ruined house just east of Last Light (X: 34; Y: 157). There are roots that emerge from a hatch, and you can use those to climb down.

Alternatively, the backyard of Last Light Inn has entrances to the prison. Pick up the key that’s on a table and unlock the cell. You can then move the crates and destroy the wall using melee attacks.

How to Defeat the Meenlocks in BG3

The next step in Investigate Last Light Inn is to take out the Meenlocks. These creatures are quite deadly since they have the Fear Aura, which can frighten your party. Moreover, they can teleport to any spot on the map, even areas behind you (i.e. if you’re barring a doorway). As such, it’s imperative to approach this battle tactically.

I would suggest bringing Gale, preferably as an Evocation Wizard or a Sorcerer. That’s because the subclass allows you to cast Evocation-type AOE spells without damaging allies within their radius. As such, that means Fireballs and Ice Storms won’t cause any accidental deaths. Bringing a different spellcaster class without this feature might cause hassles, given that Meenlocks will surround your team, and your AOE spells would just hit your own party members.

Likewise, I opted for a more “gamey” approach. I had my party stealthily climb on the rock formations just before the large chamber. Then, once the Meenlocks attacked, I was able to use Thunderwave and Shove to push them away several times. This also caused fall damage, helping deplete their HP and whittle down their numbers. After you’ve defeated the creatures, head to the chamber/altar. You can pick up a key, as well as read a book. It should tell you about the next objective, which is in the Masons’ Guild.

How to Find the Mason’s Log in BG3

Once you’ve reached the Reitwin Masons’ Guild house, look for the Ornate Wooden Hatch at the back of the house. Enter it and head to the dark sanctum at the end of the hall while being on the lookout for traps. The sanctum is full of invisible Shadows so I recommend grouping your party in one place with any Light spell or better yet a Spirit Guardians spell from Cleric/Shadowheart since they’re revealed by light and take double Radiant damage. Once you beat them, look for the Mason’s Log on the table to finish the quest.

In any case, that’s how to complete the Investigate Last Light Inn task in Baldur’s Gate 3. You’ve cleared the area of hostiles, so it’s time for more adventures. For more tips and tactics, like whether you should go to Moonrise or Shadowfell first, visit our BG3 guides hub.
