SteamWorld Build: How to Get More Tools

Start amassing more resources in SteamWorld Build.

Before you can create advanced machines and really start taking your burg in new directions, you’ll have to get back to the basics. Finding the resources needed to do so can be a little confusing, though. Here’s how to get more Tools in SteamWorld Build.

How to Get More Tools in SteamWorld Build

You can get more Tools in SteamWorld Build by finding them randomly in the underground mines, as well as by amassing them from the Toolmaker. It’s worth noting that there are only a select few Tools that you’ll find in the mines, so don’t expect to have the full catalog at your disposal that way.

I personally think that this is a way for the game to give you what you need at any particular moment; it’s sort of an RNG item drop. When I was just starting, I saw enough Tools for some basic construction projects, but I knew I had to gather more of the resource for later use. So, I struck out to find how to get more.

The Best Way Get Tools in SteamWorld Build

SteamWorld Build Tools are obtained primarily from the Toolmaker, which requires 3,000x Money and 10x Boards. That might sound straightforward, but it does imply that you need to advance further in your playthrough’s milestones. You can refer to our money-making guide to learn about increasing your cash inflows from residential, which includes dealing with citizen needs and finding chests in the Mines (there’s a lot to do in the Mines).

Around the same time, you should also have access to the Scrap Extractor, which you’ll need to take advantage of in the Mines. You can check our Scrap farming guide to know more about this particular material.

Once you have a steady inflow of Scrap, your Toolmaker building should convert each material into a Tool every 15 seconds. You can just sit back and relax until you’ve earned more of these.

Tools themselves don’t generate citizen happiness directly. Instead, the resource is used to construct additional buildings, such as the Spare Parts Maker, Water Purifier, Water Service Shop, Burger Meister, Polymerization Plant, and Waxing Shop. In turn, these satisfy the needs of your Engineers and Aristobots, increasing their efficiency.

That’s how to get more Tools in SteamWorld Build. If you’re keen on learning more about resources, you can read our Gold farming guide. For more tips and strategies, you can check out our SWBuild guides hub.
