How to Get Additional Characters

By default, only Leon Kennedy is available to start. However, you’ll unlock more characters once you’ve cleared a stage with at least an A-rank (100,000 points) with the previous character. Here’s how it breaks down:

  • How to Unlock Luis: Clear any stage with Leon (A-rank).
  • How to Unlock Krauser: Clear any stage with Luis (A-rank).
  • How to Unlock Hunk: Clear any stage with Krauser (A-rank).

The three stages in Mercenaries Mode are unlocked in order. The Village is available by default and, once you’ve finished one run, you can pick the Castle. After clearing the Castle, you’ll unlock the Island. We’ve got level-specific tips in our Mercenaries Mode map strategies guide.

How to Get the Mercenaries Mode Handcannon

Originally, the only way to obtain the Handcannon was through multiple campaign clears:

  • Beat the game once to unlock Professional difficulty.
  • Complete Professional difficulty on a fresh run (not New Game+) without using bonus weapons (i.e., Infinite Rocket Launcher, Primal Knife, or Chicago Sweeper).

That, in and of itself, is a tall ordeal, since Professional difficulty presents the toughest challenge yet. Though we have tips for beating Professional difficulty, there’s now an alternate method to unlock the Handcannon.

To get the Handcannon via RE4 Mercenaries Mode, all you need to do is get an S-rank in all three stages, which is at least a score of 200,000.

Once you do, the Handcannon will appear in the Bonuses -> Extra Content Shop menu, and you can purchase it for 1,000 completion points. Then, once you load your campaign, you should find it in the Typewriter’s storage tab, ready for use.

Those are all of the Resident Evil 4 remake Mercenaries unlocks you can get your hands on. Once fully upgraded, the Handcannon is the most powerful regular firearm in the game, and its exclusive perk grants the weapon infinite ammo.
