Skyrim is a popular RPG developed by Bethesda Softworks and published by Zenimax Studios. This fifth entry in the critically acclaimed Elder Scrolls series was released for PC, Xbox 360, and PS3 in 2011. Centered around a quest to save the snowiest realm of Tamriel from the threat of an evil dragon, Skyrim encourages players to explore its vast world and join a number of factions -- even taking sides in a civil war that rages across the home of the Nords. Players may customize their characters to suit any adventuring style using a variety of skill trees, weapon types, and armor options. Since its original release on last generation's consoles, Skyrim and its 3 expansions have been remastered for both the Xbox and PS4, and recently received ports to the Nintendo Switch and VR devices as well. The game also has a dedicated modding community that creates thousands of mods on a near-daily basis. These mods can vary from simple enhancements like bug fixes and textural updates to major changes like graphical overhauls and fan-made expansions. Some mods even tackle NSFW and other adult content for people who want a more explicit Skyrim experience. While mods were previously only compatible with PC versions of Skyrim, Bethesda recently made select mods available for Xbox One and PS4 as well.
