Baldur’s Gate 3: How to Open the Selune’s Seal Gilded Chest in the Owlbear Cave

Opening the Gilded Chest with Selune's Seal in the Owlbear Cave in Baldur's Gate 3 takes a little problem solving.

I left behind the Gilded Chest branded with Selune’s Seal in the Owlbear Cave the first time around just because I couldn’t figure out how to open it. You take damage when you try to open or lockpick the chest. Without a keen eye and a healthy curiosity, you may just wander off and forget about it. In this guide we’ll go over how to unlock the Gilded Chest in the Owlbear Cave in Baldur’s Gate 3.

How to Open the Gilded Chest in the Owlbear Cave in Baldur’s Gate 3

This is the first time you’ll run into Selune’s Seal in the game, and you’ll have to get a little creative to remove it. The unorthodox approach to opening this Gilded Chest should be a lesson to keep your eyes open as you explore your way through all three of the game’s acts.

After you come to the Gilded Chest with Selune’s Seal and your companions comment on it (along with skill checks), jump across the water to the small alcove with the statue. Walk behind the statue and your character and companions may comment on an item of note, a Selunite Prayer Sheet, depending on their skill checks. Doing so will reveal the Selunite Prayer Sheet, which you’ll need to read and win a Religion check to notice the seal is the same as the nearby Gilded Chest.

Jump back over the water and interact with the chest. If you’ve read the Selunite Prayer Sheet, Selune’s Seal will disappear from the chest and allow you to open it. Inside, you’ll find a few things:

  • Selunite Rite
  • Silver Necklace
  • Bloodstone
  • Idol of Selune
  • Moondrop Pendant — Writhing Dance: When the wearer has 50% hit points or less, they don’t provoke Opportunity Attacks.

I can’t comment on how this all goes if you fail every check. Just to be safe, save before you come close to the chest. But with that, you now know how to open the Gilded Chest protected by Selune’s Seal in the Owlbear Cave in Baldur’s Gate 3. You can also slay the Owlbear in here to get an egg worth 750 gold, and potentially invite a baby Owlbear to your camp at a later time.
