If future Call of Duty games follow the example set by Modern Warfare 3, we could be seeing the popular Zombies mode in many more future titles. This year’s offering, Modern Warfare Zombies, brings the fan-favorite mode into the modern day, in an open-world setting, on the brand-new Urzikstan Warzone map. But with Zombies taking place on the Warzone map does that mean it’ll also be free like the battle royale mode? The answer is fairly clear.
Will Modern Warfare Zombies Be Free to Play
Activision hasn’t made a firm statement on the matter, but if the recent blog post on Zombies lore is any indication, no, Modern Warfare Zombies will not be free to play. You’ll need to purchase at least the base version of Modern Warfare 3 to play it. I’m a bit worried about the disconnect, as the fate of last year’s DMZ mode is still up in the air, and it was a free part of Warzone.
Honestly, it’s almost certainly a monetary decision. Zombies has always been one of the flagship modes and features in any game where it appears, and tying it to this year’s game makes sense from a business perspective.
On the flip side, opening up Zombies to the masses would likely bring tons of new fans to the mode who’ve never played it. With Call of Duty focused as much as it is on microtransactions (which aren’t so micro, in some cases), and with Zombies customization always being really out there, there’s a lot of money to be made.
On the other flip side, buying Modern Warfare 3 now offers a better value. You get three modes for what you paid for two last year. Plus, Warzone and DMZ remain free to play, and MW3 launches with twenty maps, with twelve more coming later in its title year. There’s a lot to love if you want to get the most Call of Duty for your buck.
That answers the question: will Modern Warfare Zombies be free? Stay tuned for more as we get closer to the release of MW3 on November 10 for PC, PlayStation, and Xbox platforms.
