No matter how iconic a character might be, they simply can’t go at it alone. It’s always better when they’ve got friends to back them up. Our guide discusses all available party members and companions in Super Mario RPG.

All Recruitable Party Members and Companions in Super Mario RPG

The Super Mario RPG party members are Mario, Mallow, Geno, Bowser, and Peach. By the time you’ve progressed through the campaign, you’ll be able to recruit all of them as part of the story. I personally found the Mario, Mallow, and Geno trio quite dependable during the course of my playthrough. I did swap Bowser and Peach whenever I wanted to make use of their abilities, too.

You Start the Game as Mario

Naturally, everyone’s favorite plumber is the star of a game titled Super Mario RPG. Not only do you begin the game as Mario, but he’s also a mandatory requirement for your entire three-person squad. That means Mario is always part of the team, and you can only swap out the remaining two companions.

How to Get Mallow as a Companion

Mallow is the first companion you’ll meet in the campaign. Originally professing that he’s a tadpole, you soon learn there’s more to his origin once you visit Tadpole Pond. Mario encounters Mallow after talking to the chancellor of the Mushroom Kingdom.

How to Get Geno as a Companion

Geno is a toy doll brought to life, and he’s also one of the best companions in Super Mario RPG, thanks to his devastating abilities. You’ll see how he turns into a humanoid being upon reaching Rose Town. Later, you’ll have to follow him as you go through the Forest Maze.

How to Get Bowser as a Companion

Although Mario battles Bowser early on, the two form an unlikely partnership a few hours into the campaign. This occurs just before you tackle the Booster Tower Portrait Puzzle, whereupon the usual baddie has our heroes join his posse. (Or is it the other way around?)

How to Get Peach as a Companion

Rounding out the group is Princess Peach. A quintessential damsel in distress, Peach is first kidnapped by Bowser, before being taken by another fella named Booster. Once you spoil Booster’s plans and return to the Mushroom Kingdom, Peach will happily join your squad.
