How to Get to the TotK Snow Mountain Shrine

The TotK snow mountain shrine (called the Gutanbac Shrine) is located in the southeastern portion of the map. Before you venture there, it’s important to get some cold resistance to traverse the Tears of the Kingdom snow mountain area.

At this point in TotK, that means harvesting Spicy Peppers found throughout the areas leading up to the TotK snow mountain Shrine. Eating these spicy peppers without cooking only grants health, so be sure to put them in a pot first.

Each cooked Spicy Pepper cooked gives you 2:30 of cold resistance.

  • 1 pepper = 2 minutes
  • 2 peppers = 5 min
  • 3 peppers = 7 min
  • 4 peppers= 10 min
  • 5 hot peppers = 12min+

Though it’s possible to reach the snow mountain Shrine after the Ukouh puzzle area, you’ll find ice walls blocking your path. There is a hidden path through the ice, but it’s best to follow the story path instead. To reach the snow shrine, it’s best to first complete the In-Isa Shrine.

Starting from the In-Isa Shrine, head down the large stairs and go to the right, fighting your way through enemy constructs. You’ll eventually come to a hole in the rock wall that leads to Pondside Cave. This is a fairly lit cave that is a straight path forward.

When you leave the cave, you’ll be met with a large expanse of water. To get across, combine the nearby logs and Zonai Fan to make a boat.

On the other side, take the stairs to the left up to reach the Mining Cave. This cave is dark, so make use of the nearby Brightbloom Seeds to light the way. At the end, you’ll see a rail that goes outside and to the clouds. To ride that rail, combine the nearby minecart with the fan Zonai device you receive from the construct and head up.

At the end of the rail ride, head to the left until you reach Pit Cave. At the entrance, there is a mound of cracked rocks to the right. Hitting these a few times with a rock hammer will break them to open a shortcut through the cave.

After reaching the golden mineral rock, climb to the top left and reach the ledge. Then climb up the second ledge, and head to the right until you make it out of the cave. You’re halfway to the Totk snow mountain Shrine.

When exiting the cave, follow the stone path that isn’t covered in snow, and battle the enemies along the way. Eventually, there will be another cave entrance. Proceed through that one by following the path up. Be wary of the Like Likes there, as they do some mean damage.

At the exit of the second cave, there will be roots of an old tree hanging down. Climb these roots to find the TotK snow Shrine at the top. Go inside the Gutanbac Shrine to get the Ascend ability.

That’s how to reach the snow mountain Shrine in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. After getting the Ascend ability from the third shrine, be sure to get the Archaic Warm Greaves, which provide good cold resistance this early in the game.
