Monster Hunter Stories 2: How to Play Multiplayer

The multiplayer function is unlocked after completing the Stranger in Black story mission. You will also need Expedition Tickets, which can be bought at Melynx Inc. or found in co-op quest treasure chests. Using a Rare Expedition Ticket will allow you to explore a Rare Den. Then head over to the Quest Board at any village and you should see the option for Multiplayer at the bottom.

There are two options which are Local Play and Online Play. Choose either one of them and you can decide to go on a Co-Op Quest with your buddies or fight them in a battle.

A list will pop up of available quests you can partake in and each quest has a star ranking that corresponds to how far you are in the main story. As you increase your Kinship level throughout the game, you’ll be able to take on higher ranked quests.

If you create a lobby, you will see a Match ID at the top right of your screen. You can give your Match ID to who you would like to play with to have them join your lobby with minimal fuss.

If you see a quest you’d like to join that says “Seeking”, you can just click “Confirm” and you’ll be on your merry way. You can only bring along three Monsties with you at a time, as your buddy will have the other three for a total of six together.

Monster Hunter Stories 2: How Multiplayer Works

During an Expedition Quest, you and your buddy can fight separately. You’ll see them covered in a cloud of dust if they enter a battle. You can then join in by touching it.

When fighting, both of you have to wait until you’ve selected your next action in order for the fight to move forward. Also note that you can only use items on your partner if you’re currently in the same fight as them.

In these Expedition Quests, your goal is to defeat the quest’s boss monster and they poach one of the eggs. After that, the quest is over!

In versus mode, you can face off against one other person, or do a tag team 4vs4 battle. You won’t be able to use any items that you’ve found in-game for these battles, but you can choose between four different item sets to help you out: Balanced, Assault, Strategist, and Fortitude.

Each item set has its uses. For example, the Strategist Set has plenty of traps to utilize while the Assault Set has things like Whetstones to sharpen weapons with or bombs to throw.

Versus battles are pretty simple. Just like in the main game, you and your Monstie share three hearts between both of you. When one of you reaches 0 HP, then you lose a heart, but then whoever fell gets back up at full health. Whoever loses all three hearts loses the battle.

That’s all of the basic information you’ll need for multiplayer in Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin! Co-Op multiplayer can be pretty fun, whether with friends or strangers online. Multiplayer is the heart of Monster Hunter, even here in Stories 2. Check out some of our other Monster Hunter Stories 2 guides here on GameSkinny.
