How to Take Out 3 Thwomps in Mario Kart Tour

With the right item combos, taking out 3 Thwomps in Mario Kart Tour is a breeze.

Thwomps are normally giant unstoppable obstacles in Mario Kart Tour, but the New Year challenge lists are now somehow expecting players to take out 3 during a race!

While it seems like the classic "irresistible force meets an immovable object" conundrum, in this case we can finally resolve that classic thought experiment. Thwomps will go down if you know how to hit them right.

This challenge doesn't need to be completed in one single race, so take your time figuring out where the Thwomps reside and hit them at your leisure as you get the right items over time.

Take Out 3 Thwomps Mario Kart Tour Challenge

Not sure where to find three Thwomps in Mario Kart Tour? In the New Year tour, these are the most reliable courses to find Thwomps and work towards completing the challenge:

  • Tokyo Blur 2
  • Bowser's Castle
  • Rainbow Road

Take note of the Thwomp's movement pattern as you complete the course's two laps, because they rise and fall on opposite schedules.

Learning when one or the other will be on the ground is key to actually hitting one with the correct item.

Now that you know where to find them, the next step is to actually take them out. Simply running into Thwomps or hitting them with green shells isn't enough to knock them over.

To take down a Thwomp, you need to use one of these options:

  • Mega Mushroom
  • Bowser's Shell
  • Lightning
  • Bullet Bill

With the exception of the Bowser's Shell special ability (only available to a small number of drivers), all of those items are more likely to drop if you are in seventh or eighth place, so this is a challenge where you don't actually want to win the race.

Lightning is by far the hardest item to get, although it has the most options for gliders to increase your item drop chances. While there are fewer glider options for the other item choices, they tend to be easier to acquire overall.

When hitting a Thwomp in big mode after using a Mega Mushroom, you move so fast it seems like you just went through the object.

You'll know you hit it right and are working towards the challenge if "Thwomp" appears in the bonus point text notification area on the right side.

For Bullet Bill, make sure to wait to use the item until you are just in front of the Thwomp since you can't steer while in Bullet Bill mode.

Finally, don't forget you can only use Bowser's Shell with specific drivers, and there are no gliders to increase the chances of pulling that item (so far anyway; they may be added in a future update).

Here are the combos to use to increase your chances on pulling each item type to finish the take out 3 Thwomps Mario Kart Tour challenge:

Item Glider/Driver
Mega Mushroom Piranha Plant Parafoil
Full Flight
Bowser's Shell Bowser
Bowser Jr.
Dry Bowser
Bullet Bill Wario Wing
Waluigi Wing
Bullet Bill Parachute
Lightning Lightning Oilpaper
Glitter Glider
Cloud Glider
Rainy Balloons

Note that finishing this challenge after completing the Kadomatsu Challenge and earning a score of 5,000 or higher using a driver wearing gloves gets a bingo on the challenge card.
