Rust Guide: How to find Food and Cook in Rust

Food is key to survival everywhere; learn how to find, cook, and survive in Rust.

How to find Food and Cook in RustYour next step is to find yourself some food. Your hunger counter, seen in the lower right hand of the screen, is probably getting dangerously low by now. var adunit_index = 4000; if ((adunit_index != 1000 & adunit_index != 1001) || (adunit_index == 1000 && device_category != 'MOBILE') || (adunit_index == 1001 && device_category == 'MOBILE')) { if (active_ad_units[adunit_index] != undefined) { console.log('Dyn Unit Legacy', active_ad_units[adunit_index], adunit_index); googletag.cmd.push(function () { var adunit_index = 4000; if (typeof(pubwise) != 'undefined' & pubwise.enabled === true) { console.log('Dyn PW'); pwpbjs.que.push(function() { pubwiseLazyLoad([gptadslots[adunit_index]], true); }); } else { console.log('Dyn Direct'); googletag.display('div-sjr-4000'); googletag.pubads().refresh([gptadslots[adunit_index]]); } //googletag.pubads().refresh([gptadslots[4000]]); }); } } First task:Where to Find FoodFind a Pig. Pigs will be your main source of sustenance until you can hunt bigger and better animals. Your hatchet will do the job just fine; pigs are slow and can easily be run alongside and smacked down. Pigs spawn at random and without a map finding your way around the Rust island is difficult. Look in wide open fields for pigs, they tend to roam here solo.Smack the pig like there is no tomorrow and get yourself some chicken meat (don't ask, that's just how this world works). But what’s this? The meat is raw, you say?How to Cook Food with FireYour next step is easier than the first two, trust me. If you’ve supplies left over from your wood and stone harvesting, this job is simple. Go into your crafting menu, with tab, and build yourself a campfire. Set it up and cook your meat over the open flame, ensuring all bacteria is gone and it is safe to eat. Food takes some time to cook, be patient. Hopefully you’ve got enough to last you for a little while, pigs aren’t quite easy to come by; bears are too strong and deer are too fast. Don’t bother chasing down a deer with a melee weapon, you’ll only run for miles and end up with nothing but a lower hunger meter.Up Next: How to deal with other Players in Rust >>Learn how to survive your first day/night in Rust.
