How to Get Married in Skyrim

Wondering how to get married in Skyrim? Here's everything you need to know about marriage.

Getting married in Skyrim is a great way to delve into the game’s deeper role-playing elements. From Khajiit to Argonian to Nord, there are many romance options and marriage candidates available across the 10 races. But if you’re here, you may be wondering exactly how to get married in Skyrim. This guide will tell you how to do that, as well as where to find an important item that you’ll need to get married: the Amulet of Mara.

Skyrim: How to Get Married

  • There are a total of 66 NPCs across Skyrim you can marry, and obviously more with mods.
  • You’ll need the Amulet of Mara, which can be obtained in a few ways, to take part in the Bonds of Matrimony.

Before you seek out any romance options or marriage candidates, you’ll need a nice piece of jewelry for your companion. The jewelry in question is the Amulet of Mara, and it is a requirement to win over any of the available NPCs in the game.

To get the Amulet of Mara, travel to Riften and find Maramal.  He’s first found at the Bee and Bard, but after that will be at the Temple of Mara.

Speak to Maramal about weddings, and he’ll tell you how marriages work in the Old Kingdom. This starts the Bonds of Matrimony quest, where your goal is to tie the knot.

How to Get an Amulet of Mara

You can purchase an Amulet of Mara from Maramal for 200 gold. The amulet can also be found randomly in loot, purchased from other merchants, or you may already have it if you’ve already done the Book of Love quest.

You can’t just marry anyone, however. There are 66 NPCs in Skyrim that you can marry, each with special requirements to win them over. You may have to retrieve something for them, complete a questline, or even beat them up to win their love. I personally marry Ysolda every time to access her merchant inventory, plus you meet her early on in the game if you follow the main story line.

With the Amulet of Mara equipped, and after you’ve completed a task for them, interact with NPCs to access a special dialogue option. Pop the question, and they will agree to get married. It’s that easy. All that’s left to do is go through the wedding ceremony.

How to Do a Marriage Ceremony

Return to Maramal and inform him that you would like to proceed with a wedding. He will need 24 hours to get everything set up, so return after that time to undergo the marriage proceedings. During the ceremony, make sure to confirm your marriage, otherwise things may get a bit awkward.

If for whatever reason you miss your own ceremony or fail to confirm your marriage, you can simply re-prepose to the same marriage candidate, and they will accept. NPCs are apparently very forgiving when it comes to standing them up at their wedding. The only way you can never marry that NPC is if you choose the option “I never loved you anyway,” which ends all romantic possibilities.

How to Divorce in Skyrim

With your newfound love, you can now enjoy the married life in Skyrim. If you find yourself not enjoying your marriage, well, divorce isn’t an option. Murder is, however. In fact, it’s your only choice if you’re desperate to be without your spouse. Want a divorce? Kill them.

You can only marry once without using mods. We’ll leave that decision to you, though. We’re just here to tell you how to get married in Skyrim. If you’re interested in more tips and tricks, check out our Skyrim guides page.
