Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader — How to Heal and Treat Injuries

Here's how to heal and treat Injuries and Traumas in Warhammer 40K Rogue Trader.

You’ll already know the game’s unique HP system called Wounds, and know that they can inflict injuries. In turn, these can eventually turn into Traumas and negative effects, so it’s better to heal sooner than later. Here’s how to heal and treat Injuries in Warhammer 40K Rogue Trader.

Warhammer 40K Rogue Trader: HP, Wounds, and Injuries

While slightly confusing, your HP in Warhammer 40K Rogue Trader is referred to as wounds. The more you lose, the more wounds you gain. Either way, it pretty much works the same way as in any other CRPG. However, the unique system in this game involves the Injuries and Traumas you can be inflicted with.

Rogue Trader Injuries and Traumas Explained

  • On the Core difficulty, Injuries occur whenever your character loses 50% of their non-temporary maximum wounds in a single combat round.
    • For the first three rounds or 18 seconds out of combat, the Injury is Fresh and can be treated easily. After that, it becomes an Old Injury, which will require a skill check to heal.
  • Traumas happen after receiving three Injuries. You also automatically receive a Trauma if your character drops to 0.

Injuries and, to a greater degree, Traumas impose negative effects on your character in addition to reducing their Resolve for Momentum gain. I found that stat penalties are the most common, especially for Agility, Strength, and Weapon and Ballistic Skill. The nature of your Trauma depends on the circumstances.

How to Heal: Auto-Heal, Medikits, and Resting

You can heal Wounds, Injuries, and Traumas in the following ways:

  • Wounds & Auto-Heal: Once combat is over, your party will regain all of their wounds but Injuries and Traumas must be treated.
  • Injuries & Medikits: Using a Medikit (see below for how) restores “6+(Medicae Skill/5)” wounds. Furthermore, this consumable also removes one Fresh Injury automatically and the Bleeding status. If no Fresh Injuries are present, you’ll roll a Medicae skill check to remove an Old Injury, which you can fail, consuming the Medikit to no effect.
  • Trauma & Resting: Traumas are automatically removed once your character enters a resting area, such as the Bridge of your ship. Alternatively, if you cannot access your ship and are out exploring, I recommend finding Medicae stations or healers, which will grant a similar effect.

Injuries and Traumas can also be healed by using rare and expensive consumable items you’ll find throughout Footfall and while exploring. Though, I would use my tips guide to combat to ensure you don’t have to rely on any of these methods.

How to Use Medkits

To use a Medikit in Warhammer 40,000 Rogue Trader:

  • Equip it in the Inventory screen on a character who can use them.
  • Leave the inventory screen.
  • Select the character who has the Medikit equipped.
  • In the quick-swap menu in the lower-left, press up to select a Medikit.
  • Use it and then click on a character you would like to heal.

This will automatically use the Medikit. Note that characters must be adjacent to each other to perform this interaction.

And that’s how to heal and treat Injuries in Warhammer 40K Rogue Trader, as well as how Wounds and Traumas play into the mechanics. Remember to treat Fresh Injuries right after combat or, if you judge that the combat will last more than three rounds, during it. If you’re healing Fresh Injuries a high Medicae skill isn’t required.
