Darkest Dungeon 2 Encounter Types Guide

There's a variety of locations to stop at while traveling Redemption Road in Darkest Dungeon 2.

There are a variety of locations you can stop at in Darkest Dungeon 2. From combat encounters to nodes bearing supplies for purchase, Redemption Road is littered with different places that you can interact with. Here’s a list of all the location nodes for each region in Darkest Dungeon 2.

In general, regions spawn with different location node modifiers depending on which region it is and how long the map is going to be for that region. Watchtowers are not guaranteed to spawn in any short region map. Creature Dens and Oasis spawns are not guaranteed at all, unless they are the target of the region goal. Each region also has its own modifiers.

The Tangle

The forest region, now overgrown and wild. The Tangle has less Watchtower, Hoarder, Field Hospital spawns but it does have a higher chance of an Oasis spawn as well as a guaranteed Creature Den.

  • Lair: The General’s Keep — Where you can encounter The Dreaming General.
  • Assistance Encounter — Decide whether to help for a reward or leave the peasants to fend for themselves. Only way to repair Stagecoach Wheels or Shields while in a region.
  • Resistance Encounter: The Forgotten Outpost — Combat against the Lost Battalion.
  • The Academic’s Study — Gain special items at the risk of new Quirks, Flame reduction or combat.
  • Oblivion’s Rampart — Final combat of a region against Cultists.
  • Road Hazard — Arrows rain down on the Stagecoach reducing 1 Shield.
  • Rough Patch — Uneven cobblestones and rocks jut into your wagon reducing 1 Wheel.
  • Road Encounter — Unavoidable combat encounter against Pillagers or Gaunt.
  • Flame Extinguished Ambush — Cultists ambush when your Flame is fully extinguished.
  • Urgent Repairs! — When you hit a Rough Patch without any Wheels or a Road Hazard without any Armor you’ll be launched into an Urgent Repairs! combat encounter.
  • The Field Hospital — Restore characters’ health, cure diseases, remove or lock Quirks, or purchase healing items.
  • The Hoarder — Buy a variety of items here.
  • Watchtower — Visit to discover all unknown locations on the map.
  • Hero Shrine — Uncover a Hero’s background and unlock more of their skills.
  • Oblivion’s Ingress — Combat encounter against Cultists.

The Shroud

The new home of the Fisherfolk built along the coast. It has guaranteed Watchtower and Oasis spawns.

  • Lair: The Sacred Pier — Battle against the Leviathan.
  • Assistance Encounter — Decide whether to help for a reward or leave the peasants to fend for themselves. Only way to repair Stagecoach Wheels or Shields while in a region.
  • Resistance Encounter: The Sunken Monolith — Combat with the Fisherfolk.
  • Watchtower — Visit to discover all unknown locations on the map.
  • Academic’s Cache — Supplies for the taking.
  • Oblivion’s Rampart — Final combat of a region against Cultists.
  • The Field Hospital — Restore characters’ health, cure diseases, remove or lock Quirks, or purchase healing items.
  • The Hoarder — Buy a variety of items here.
  • Creature Den — Face off against creatures, including spiders, in a two part battle.
  • Hero Shrine — Uncover a Hero’s background and unlock more of their skills.
  • Road Hazard — Tentacles from the deep attack your Stagecoach reducing 1 Shield.
  • Rough Patch — Uneven cobblestones and rocks jut into your wagon reducing 1 Wheel.
  • Road Encounter — Unavoidable combat encounter against Pillagers or Gaunt.
  • Flame Extinguished Ambush — Cultists ambush when your Flame is fully extinguished.
  • Urgent Repairs! — When you hit a Rough Patch without any Wheels or a Road Hazard without any Shields you’ll be launched into an Urgent Repairs! combat encounter.
  • Oblivion’s Ingress — Combat encounter against Cultists.

The Sprawl

A ruined city set on fire in response to the Cultists coming down from the Mountain. The Sprawl has no Oasis or Creature Den spawns, along with less Academic’s Cache nodes. It does have increased Hoarder and Field Hospital locations, but also more Resistance Encounters.

  • Lair: The Great Library — You’ll find the Librarian in this blazing building.
  • Assistance Encounter — Decide whether to help for a reward or leave the peasants to fend for themselves. Only way to repair Stagecoach Wheels or Shields while in a region.
  • Resistance Encounter: The Burning Pile — Battle against Fanatics at this node.
  • Oblivion’s Rampart — Final combat of a region against Cultists.
  • The Hoarder — Buy a variety of items here.
  • The Field Hospital — Restore characters’ health, cure diseases, remove or lock Quirks, or purchase healing items.
  • The Academic’s Cache — Supplies for the taking.
  • The Academic’s Study — Gain special items at the risk of new Quirks, Flame reduction or combat.
  • Hero Shrine — Uncover a Hero’s background and unlock more of their skills.
  • Oblivion’s Ingress — Combat encounter against Cultists.
  • Road Hazard — Flames assault the Stagecoach reducing 1 Armor.
  • Rough Patch — Uneven cobblestones and rocks jut into your wagon reducing 1 Wheel.
  • Road Encounter — Unavoidable combat encounter against Pillagers or Gaunt.
  • Flame Extinguished Ambush — Cultists ambush when your Flame is fully extinguished.

The Foetor

Cannibalism has taken a mutated turn here. This region does have a guaranteed Creature Den as well as more Academic’s Cache and Assistance Encounters. There are less Field Hospital and Oasis spawns, however.

  • Lair: The Harvest House — Defeat the Harvest Child to obtain its trophy.
  • Assistance Encounter — Decide whether to help for a reward or leave the peasants to fend for themselves. Only way to repair Stagecoach Wheels or Shields while in a region.
  • Resistance Encounter: The Towering Feast — Where you can battle against Plague Eaters.
  • Oblivion’s Rampart — Final combat of a region against Cultists.
  • Creature Den — Face off against creatures, including spiders, in a two part battle.
  • The Hoarder — Buy a variety of items here.
  • The Academic’s Cache — Supplies for the taking.
  • Oblivion’s Ingress — Combat encounter against Cultists.
  • Hero Shrine — Uncover a Hero’s background and unlock more of their skills.
  • Oasis — Heal a Hero’s Stress by five or obtain Mineral-Rich Spring Water Combat Item.
  • Road Hazard — A swarm of flies assaults the Stagecoach reducing 1 Shield.
  • Rough Patch — Uneven cobblestones and rocks jut into your wagon reducing 1 Wheel.
  • Road Encounter — Unavoidable combat encounter against Pillagers or Gaunt.
  • Flame Extinguished Ambush — Cultists ambush when your Flame is fully extinguished.
  • Urgent Repairs! — When you hit a Rough Patch without any Wheels or a Road Hazard without any Shields you’ll be launched into an Urgent Repairs! combat encounter.
  • The Field Hospital — Restore characters’ health, cure diseases, remove or lock Quirks, or purchase healing items.

The Sluice

While the Sluice is unmapped, there are still encounter nodes throughout its maze of roadways.

  • Resistance Encounter: The Warren — Face off against Swine in the throwback location of The Warren.
  • The Academic’s Study — Gain special items at the risk of new Quirks, Flame reduction or combat.
  • Creature Den — Face off against creatures, including spiders, in a two part battle.
  • The Swine’s Cache — Reclaim stolen items from the Swine.
  • Road Hazard — A swarm of flies assaults the Stagecoach reducing 1 Shield.
  • Rough Patch — Uneven cobblestones and rocks jut into your wagon reducing 1 Wheel.
  • Road Encounter — Unescapable encounter against the Swine.
  • Urgent Repairs! — When you hit a Rough Patch without any Wheels or a Road Hazard without any Shields you’ll be launched into an Urgent Repairs! combat encounter.
  • Flame Extinguished Ambush — Cultists ambush when your Flame is fully extinguished.

Those are all the encounter types in each region in Darkest Dungeon 2. Each region has many of the same types of nodes, but are specialized for the region you’re in.
