GTA 5 PC: How to Link Steam and Social Club

How do you link Steam and Social Club? Easy. Using this GTA 5 guide, we'll show you exactly how to connect the two services in no time.

You just got your copy of GTA V on PC, and you're anxious to explore Los Santos and wreak havoc! However, Steam and Rockstar's version of Uplay, Social Club, are barring the way. Fear not! You are not alone. With the quick tips in this guide, you'll soon be on your way to causing mass mayhem yourself.

Getting (Un)Stuck on Steam Overlay

Many GTA 5 PC players report being stuck in a loop where they're unsure if their accounts actually linked to Social Club or note (there isn't really any feedback letting you know if you're successful or not).

Social Club actually opens the Steam overlay in some cases, covering an "OK" button on the bottom right-hand side. If you close the Steam overlay with the SHIFT+TAB combination, you should be able to see the button and link the accounts!

After Linking Your Accounts to Social Club

Main Screen for Grand Theft Auto 5 Social Club

After you successfully link your Steam and Social Club accounts, you may receive an error because Social Club fails to boot. In this case, Rockstar suggests uninstalling the Social Club program and manually reinstalling it from this support page

Always ensure your Steam cache is verified as well. Right-click the game in your Steam library and click "Properties". Then you'll want to click the "Local" files tab. And then you'll click "Verify integrity of Game Cache". If you need to manually add GTA 5 to Steam, click here

Another possible fix suggested by Rockstar is to run Social Club as an administrator (simply right-click the Social Club program and then select Run as Administrator.)

So if I buy the case of Gta 5 where is located the code, can't I put it in steam?or If I put it it says that is a non steam game?

By case are you referring to the physical copy of the game? Only a game purchased through Steam is a Steam game. All other games must be added manually by the instructions I listed. Adding a game only allows you to access it from your Steam library and use the Steam overlay in-game.

    You're totally misleading..
Launching the game by adding GTAV to library as "non-steam game" (and no.. You dont tell how to do it in your article) doesnt LINK account by any means! it just allows you to use steam overlay in game.. and thats just stupid imo since you can already play game with borderless-windowed mode. Linking means that I should get the in-game achievments in steam (Which I dont with ur version of linking).. So there's that :/

    I don't see how I am misleading.
A fellow inquired how to add a game to Steam, so the instructions are below.

I never said running GTA 5 through Steam via a manual add was linking anything. This article was a quick fix for many players who had issues with their copy they purchased through Steam and linking their Steam and Social Club accounts.

If you are playing the game without it being a Steam copy, you don't get achievements, trading cards, or other Steam bonuses. You should still be able to track playtime and take screenshots and use the overlay.

I'm sorry you are confused, but I never posted anything misleading here. If you would read the other comments, you have seen information about playing a non-Steam copy and the inability to link it to Steam.

I got GTA V but apparently i bought a non-steam version which just plays it via the Rockstar Social Club app. Is there a way to link it to steam anyway, or even better - to exchange my rockstar key for a Steam key?
  • The Soapbox Lord
    Featured Contributor
No exchanges can be made for keys.
You can use Steam to run a game not in Steam (instructions in the article), but you cannot link it to Steam in the way I imagine you want.

when I start up the game, rockstar social starts and displays loading..but the game doesn't start. Help please.

    Is it a firewall issue?

Have you tried closing the Steam overlay with SHIFT+TAB?

I bought my version of GTA V from Amazon rather than Steam due to the price differential. Is there a way of linking this copy to Steam that you know of? Normally I just drop the activation code into Steam and job's a good 'un, but for some strange reason I could only activate it via Rockstar's hub.

Most keys bought outside Steam are Rockstar codes used to redeem games in their proprietary Social Club program. As such, it has to be be added to your Steam library manually, not sure about linking Steam and Social Club with non-Steam copy.

To add a game manually, you have to click "Add Non-Steam Game to my Library" under the "Games" tab at the top of Steam. From there, just navigate to the directory where the game is installed.
It isn't linked, but this allows you to access the overlay, friends list, and such from the game.

    Did I answer your question?
  • Si_W
Sadly, not really, but thanks anyway. I know how to manually add games to Steam but that's not the same thing as linking them for achievements, etc.

I have this same exact problem. I got it from Amazon since I already had $10 on my gift card balance, and I am having trouble linking it. I read somewhere that it is rumored that there is no way of linking it to Steam, and we have to stick to Rockstar's social club. How do you manually add games to Steam?
  • Pierre Fouquet

Rockstar don't allow redeeming via Steam, you have to redeem via the Social Club.
As Soapbox Lord said. They also posted the instructions on how to add a non-steam game.
  • Pierre Fouquet

Well Rockstar don't let ya. As with Social Club you can't technically activate via Steam in the first place. It's like Ubisoft's Uplay, you buy the game on Steam, but then have to activate in the other client. The only way to get the game on Steam is to buy it through Steam.
It sucks but... well at least Social Club works... ohh... wait... nope.
  • The Soapbox Lord

I listed some instructions in the article for linking to Steam.
After further research, Pierre speaks the truth. Non-Steam copies cannot be linked to Steam.

Oh look! Another proprietary form of DRM which does not work and keeps players from playing the game they purchased!
