With a new season in Destiny 2 comes a new iteration of Iron Banner. Things are a little different this time. If you want to collect the Iron Banner armor sets, you have to complete the Scour the Rust questline. Also, because the quest is character-bound, you have to complete it on every character you want to have access to the armor.

Thankfully, the quest isn’t nearly as large a grind as Year 2’s. Instead, the six-part questline is made up of simple steps you can complete in about 10 hours of gameplay.

Your primary objectives will be to complete a total of 15 matches while capturing 50 zones and getting kills using various weapons and abilities. Also, each quest step builds on the one previous, so if a step requires a certain number of matches, it will count those you’ve already played.

Here are the quest steps and some quick tips on how you can complete each of them.

Note: Per a recent tweet from Bungie Help, the third, bottom-most portion of the Conviction section of Scour the Rust quest will auto-complete. Previously, that part of the quest step was glitched to say you needed super kills but showed Grenade Launcher kills and accepted SMG kills. You will still need to finish the other two parts of the quest.

Scour the Rust Part 1: Spectacle

For the introductory portion of Scour the Rust, you need to:

  • Defeat 30 opponents.
  • Capture 10 zones
  • Achieve 3 Super kills

The first two steps are easy enough. For opponents defeated, stick with your teammates and nab whatever kills they can’t land. If you’re having trouble capturing zones, wait until you respawn and walk toward the nearest one. The game will attempt to place you close to a safe area near a zone, and with a little patience, you’ll be done before you know it.

For super kills, your best bet is to equip one of the following supers:

  • Bottom tree Dawnblade (the Solar super) for Warlock,
  • Bottom tree Striker (the Arc super) for Titan
  • Spectral Blades (middle tree Void super) for Hunter

Any of these roaming supers grant impressive armor and plenty of killing power, making three kills a breeze. Be smart, and you won’t have any issues.

Scour the Rust Step 2: Intent

For the second step of Scour the Rust, you must:

  • Complete 6 Iron Banner matches
  • Capture 20 zones
  • Achieve 25 pulse rifle final blows

Completing matches is, well, completing matches. Play any match to the score or time limit, and you’ll progress that step. Zones are zones, too. No tricks here or at any other point.

Pulse rifle kills are straightforward, as well. The same advice stands here: stick with your team and keep your distance from the enemy. Pulse rifles are strong in the current meta, so pick up the one you like best and shoot. One or two matches should be all you’ll need.

Scour the Rust Step 3: Timing

For step three of Scour the Rust, you’ll need to:

  • Defeat 100 opponents
  • Capture 30 zones
  • Achieve 20 kills with fusion rifles

The first two parts here are as always. Fusion rifle kills will require a little more finesse, and you’ll need to be in your enemy’s face a lot more. My best advice is to learn to pre-charge your fusion when you expect an engagement, so you’re ready to shoot the instant an opponent comes into your sights. Sticking with your team is, again, worthwhile.

Scour the Rust Step 4: Execution

For the fourth part of Scour the Rust, you must:

  • Kill 15 enemies with an SMG
  • Kill 15 enemies with your super
  • Capture 40 zones

SMG kills are all about intelligent aggression. You won’t be able to take distant fights at all, and medium-range engagements are out of the question as well. Stick with your team as they move on a flag and pay attention to your radar. When you see a teammate push, push with them. Stick to close quarters and be careful. Shotgun rushers are everywhere.

Super kills and zone captures are as ever.

Scour the Rust Step 5: Conviction

For the fifth — and last in-match — portion of the Scour the Rust quest, you’ll need to:

  • Complete 15 Iron Banner matches
  • Capture 50 zones

As noted, right now, that’s everything. The third part of this quest auto-completes due to a glitch in Scour the Rust.

Scour the Rust Step 6: Forgeborne

No more Iron Banner matches required for you in Scour the Rust. All that’s left is to visit Lord Saladin and claim your ability to grind for armor. By this point, all armor pieces will be available out of Iron Banner Token engrams from Saladin, costing 20 tokens per engram.

Remember, you’ll need to do this all over again on your other characters to unlock their armor. Hopefully, the grind wasn’t too terrible.
