Hi-Rez Studios recently announced that Realm Royale now features full cross-play support with PlayStation 4.

With that addition, all Hi-Rez Studios titles offer cross-play between players on all consoles and PC, and Rogue Company, the studio's upcoming 2020 title, will feature the same support from launch.

It's a notable turn of events after Sony seemed to be playing hard to get with Realm Royale cross-play earlier this year.

Regardless of the impressions Sony's pick-and-choose method left on consumers and developers — and Fortnite players — implementing cross-platform play in more titles is a move the company started opening up to several months back.

Realm Royale Bokops beta introduces corss-play and chickens.

PS4 cross-play isn't the only new thing coming to Realm Royale. Hi-Rez is introducing the special BokOps battle pass, which offers over 50 levels of cosmetic rewards all themed around the military of the future — and the chickens who fight in it.

Some of the themed outfits include the Infiltrator Assassin, One Man Army Warrior, and, of course, the deadliest of all, the Cluckmando.

On top of everything else, Realm Royale is adding a third ability slot, letting players mix and match offense, movement, and support abilities even more than before.

While all this is going on in Realm Royale, Hi-Rez's mobile SMITE spinoff title, SMITE Blitz, celebrated a soft launch earlier this week, offering lots of registration bonuses for newcomers to check out.

Realm Royale Gets Cross-Progression in New Update, But PS4 Players Left in the Cold https://www.gameskinny.com/am05j/realm-royale-gets-cross-progression-in-new-update-but-ps4-players-left-in-the-cold https://www.gameskinny.com/am05j/realm-royale-gets-cross-progression-in-new-update-but-ps4-players-left-in-the-cold Thu, 07 Mar 2019 10:03:34 -0500 Josh Broadwell

Hi-Rez Studio's Realm Royale, a free-to-play battle royale spinoff of Paladins, received its new Shadowfall update recently, which implements a wide variety of changes in the game.

The Poison Pistol gets a name change, a brand-new weapon is introduced, and there's a set of new skins. The biggest change introduced, though, is the inclusion of cross-progression for Xbox, Steam, and Discord versions of the game.

Cross-progression is when a player's progress in the game on one platform carries over to the player's linked accounts on other available platforms. In other words, progress in the Xbox version of Realm Royale will carry over to the same player's Steam or Discord version of the game with no hiccups.

Cross-progression in Realm Royale uses the player's Hi-Rez account, so those with multiple copies of the game should ensure they are all linked to the same Hi-Rez account in order for cross-progress to work.

Hi-Rez also provided information about what data will merge from accounts, saying Class Experience, Battle Pass experience, and Armory items will all merge.

The update brings a couple of other new changes as well. One of them is the Pistol, a weapon with a fast fire rate that acts like a semi-automatic gun and is well-suited for close and mid-range combat. It's available in different rarity forms as a random item in chests found across the Realm.

The Assassin-friendly Venom Pistol also received a rename in the update and is now the Shredder.

Careful reading will show that the cross-progress update does not include Sony. Those who have followed the Sony cross-platform and cross-progress controversy closely will likely not be surprised by this, though.

Many studios have expressed frustration with what they view as Sony's stubborn stance on the subject, while Nintendo and Microsoft have developed a potentially closer working relationship that started with allowing cross-platform play.

Hi-Rez's CEO and President even went so far as to say Sony was playing favorites with developers by choosing which games would receive support and which wouldn't.

Only time will tell if Sony will bring PlayStation on board.

Sony Is 'Open For Business' On Cross-Play, Devs Feel Otherwise https://www.gameskinny.com/ig98i/sony-is-open-for-business-on-cross-play-devs-feel-otherwise https://www.gameskinny.com/ig98i/sony-is-open-for-business-on-cross-play-devs-feel-otherwise Wed, 13 Feb 2019 10:34:17 -0500 William R. Parks

Over the years, Sony Interactive Entertainment has shown a great deal of reluctance in allowing PlayStation 4 owners to play multi-platform titles with players on other consoles and PC. While a recent interview with SIE Chairman Shawn Layden suggests that the company is now open to facilitating cross-play, a number of developers have come forward indicating otherwise.

Speaking with Game Informer, Layden says that while some players may be questioning why Sony does not allow games other than Fortnite and Rocket League to support cross-play, the company is "open for business on this one." He continues by explaining how a title should go about pursuing cross-play as an option:

All it takes is for publishers and developers who wish to permission it. As ever, just work with your PlayStation account manager, and they will walk you through the steps that we’ve learned through our partnership with Epic on how this works.

While this seems to be a straightforward process, certain developers are suggesting that this is simply not the case. For instance, the CEO of Chucklefish took to ResetEra, the home of a popular forum for video game discussion, to elaborate on the company's experience trying to get cross-play support for its new turn-based tactics gameWargroove.

"We made many requests for cross-play (both through our account manager and directly with higher-ups) all the way up until release month," Chucklefish's CEO claims, but it seems that these asks were ineffective. "We were told in no uncertain terms that it was not going to happen."

Furthermore, it is indicated that Chucklefish could have cross-play working for PlayStation 4 players with the "toggle of a switch." This may leave some players wondering why Sony would simply not allow them to do so.

A recent tweet from Hi-Rez Studio CEO and President Stew Chisam suggests that the reason is that Sony is "playing favorites" with what titles are given cross-play support, despite Layden's statement that he doesn't believe there is "any gating factor." As with Wargroove, Chisam additionally indicates that his company has SmitePaladins, and Realm Royale ready for cross-play.

Regardless of the reasons for Sony's reluctance, some fans are certain to be disappointed to hear that the company is still withholding cross-play support from eager developers. Perhaps Layden's remarks mean that a change is indeed on its way to the company, but Chucklefish and Hi-Rez's statements do seem to suggest that it has not yet arrived.

The interview with Shawn Layden can be found on Game Informer. Chucklefish's CEO's statement can be found on ResetEra. Stew Chisam's statement can be found on Twitter.

Everything Announced During Today's Hi-Rez Expo Keynote https://www.gameskinny.com/ley14/everything-announced-during-todays-hi-rez-expo-keynote https://www.gameskinny.com/ley14/everything-announced-during-todays-hi-rez-expo-keynote Fri, 16 Nov 2018 22:49:36 -0500 William R. Parks

Today marks the beginning of Hi-Rez Expo at DreamHack Atlanta, and the studio is starting things off with a bang, sharing exciting news for fans of SMITE, Paladins, and Realm Royale.

First among these announcements is that cross-play and cross-progression will be coming to all three titles. Arriving in January 2019 for Paladins and SMITE, and at the official release of Realm Royale, Hi-Rez Studios has provided an extensive FAQ outlining all of the details about cross-play and progression.

Additionally, each of the developers have given details on some of the things fans can expect from these three properties in 2019. Here is a summary of everything that has been revealed thus far:

Paladins

  • Imani, the Last Warder, Paladins' 40th Champion, is coming with Update 2.01 in January. Imani is a damage Champion who can harness the powers of fire and ice and summon a massive dragon.

  • Evil Mojo is implementing The Hunt, a commitment to improving the overall quality of Paladins through expanded development teams, more time scheduled for polish, and longer testing phases for patches on the PTS. This will begin as Update 2.01 hits the PTS on December 17.

  • Fans can expect a slew of new content and features, including:
    • Major monthly content updates
    • In-game tournaments
    • Post-game commendations
    • Six new champions
    • Six new maps (including three siege maps)
    • A new battle pass every two months
    • The first ultimate skin
    • New game modes
    • A revamped in-game item store
  • A player advocacy group called the Assembly of Champions is coming to Paladins. With the Assembly of Champions, players will elect year-long representatives that will act as direct lines of communication to the developers. Registration is now open at Paladins' website.

  • In celebration of Hi-Rez Expo, current Steam and PC players have free access to the game's four newest Champions, as well as a skin and voice pack for each. This offer can be downloaded on Steam as The Paladins Starter Pack DLC, and it will automatically unlock for PC players that login from November 16 to December 15.

Realm Royale

  • Heroic Leap is continuing to invite players to the Xbox One closed beta, and a closed beta is coming to PlayStation 4 "soon."

  • Cross-play between Xbox One and PC will be active during the closed beta.

  • "World creatures" are set to come to the game. The first is the Loot Goblin, making its debut this weekend, which will appear randomly throughout the map and will drop treasure when it has been slain.

  • Players that log in over the next month will receive a free Cluckomorph skin and 100 crowns.

SMITE

  • Titan Forge revealed the game's 99th and 100th Gods: King Arthur and the wizard Merlin. Arthur is currently in the play-testing phase while Merlin is in the stage of early prototypes.

  • Season 6 will also feature several other new Gods, including Horus, Set, the World Dragon, and Gods of the underworld. It will conclude with "a being so powerful it will threaten the existence of all other Gods."

  • Quality of Life changes are coming. Titan Forge highlighted the ability to role queue for Conquest, which they indicate will let players have their favorite roles more often (further assisted by the introduction of cross-play).

  • A new arena is available now, and it features an updated art style, "improved gameplay clarity," and the Minotaur.

  • A limited-time free Arena Bundle is currently available, which unlocks seven Gods and eight skins.

  • A player advocacy group called the The Olympians is coming to SMITE. With The Olympians, players will elect year-long representatives that will act as direct lines of communication to the developers. Registration is now open at SMITE's website.

  • SMITE is launching on Nintendo Switch. It will run at 60 FPS and include cross-play multiplayer. Early access begins on January 24, and players can guarantee access to this closed beta by purchasing the Founder's Pack through the Nintendo eShop. The Founder's Pack can be pre-purchased beginning today.

Further, Skillshot Media, the esports division of Hi-Rez studios, had some news to share about competitive play. This includes the beginning of competitive SMITE at the high-school level (more details are available at the PlayVS website). Additionally, Skillshot announced that all SMITE and Paladin Pro Leagues will be played live on LAN in 2019.

Hi-Rez Expo will continue throughout this weekend, and, along with the SMITE and Paladins World Championships, we may get some more exciting reveals.

Stay tuned to GameSkinny for developing news as these communities come together to celebrate their favorite games, as well as coverage on the SMITE and Paladins PC finals.

Trove Geode: Bomber Royale

\n

Taking existing games and transforming them into battle royale brawlers has been a consistent theme so far, and that continues with the free-to-play MMO Trove.

\n

This time around, Trove gets a 20 player deathmatch remake with Geode: Bomber Royale, as your pixelated characters hurl bombs, launch grappling hooks, and seek out power ups in a fully destructible environment.

\n

That last part is the big selling point here, as of course Trove (with its clear Minecraft influences) is going to let you play with the landscape a lot more than in your typical BR game.

Battlefield V

\n

It should have been obvious when Call Of Duty announced a battle royale mode that Battlefield would have no choice but to jump on as well. Thankfully the story campaign isn't getting nixed though, as the franchise jumps to WWII to tell stories of human heroism in a dark time.

\n

We don't know much about the battle royale mode yet, other than there's reportedly no loot boxes or premium pass involved. We'll have to wait until later in the year for full info to arrive on how Battlefield will deliver on the battle royale style.

Egress

\n

The dirty, synthwave-influenced style on full blast with Egress is a thing of beauty, but sadly this one won't be for me at all.

\n

Battle royale games are already frustrating enough with the quick deaths, so adding in Dark Souls-style combat seems like pure masochism. I'm not into throwing my controller or breaking my keyboard, so this will be a solid pass for me.

\n

There are plenty of Souls fanatics out there who clearly disagree though, so if you need something more than just the multiplayer addition to the Dark Souls remastered version, you will want to keep a close eye on Egress.

Europa

\n

Tencent is a company that knows a little something about battle royale games, publishing the mobile edition of PUBG and also recently being tasked with take Fortnite to China.

\n

Now they are trying their hand at a brand new, custom made entry, and it looks incredibly slick. There's everything you'd expect from a BR game plus underwater areas, speed boats, and fully destructible cover!

\n

The only question is whether this one is going to stay in China or get a full U.S. release anytime soon.

Fractured Lands

\n

In retrospect, this twist on the style is super obvious as Mad Max and Death Race are perfect fits for the battle royale genre. I also can't help but think a bit of Borderlands in the apocalyptic battle insanity on display.

\n

While you will spend time on foot gunning down the opposition, the big focus here is on upgrading your car into the perfect, high-octane killing machine. Can't say I'm not a little excited at the prospect.

\n

A summer early access wide release is expected, with the closed beta up now for those lucky enough to get in.

Fear The Wolves

\n

The shift in tone is what sets Fear The Wolves apart from the competition, as this seems like a darker, more brutal take on a genre currently dominated by bubbly and bright games like Fortnite.

\n

This one takes place in an irradiated Chernobyl wasteland, adding in a new element of needing proper equipment to explore radiation zones, along with shifting weather that can change the map.

\n

There's no definitive release date yet (I'd expect 2019 at the earliest for the consoles) but you can sign up to get a shot at future PC beta tests over here.

Crazy Justice

\n

This nifty little entry is notable for being crowd funded on Fig -- an actual investment platform that pays investors back -- rather than the usual suspects like Kickstarter or IndieGogo.

\n

Crazy Justice offers a cel-shaded style with steampunk elements, and is one of the few battle royale titles that's being actively developed for the Switch with cross-play in mind, so Nintendo fans won't be left out of the fun.

\n

The big selling points here are no micro transactions, the addition of customizable vehicles, and the ability to choose different skill load outs, so every match won't play the same.

Mavericks Proving Grounds

\n

The appeal of battle royale has always been in quick match making with large groups of people so there's immediate action and tons of enemies.

\n

Sure, you can be a bush and crawl across the landscape at snail speed or hide in a corner and snipe until the closing circle forces you to move, but for most players, battle royale matches are quick and dirty.

\n

Things are about to get a whole lot crazier on that front if Mavericks manages to deliver on its core promise. 1,000 players duking it out at a time instead of 100? Well, we'll see.

\n

Throw in the allure of destructible buildings and the ability to spread fire across the map, and you can expect Mavericks to get very nuts, very quickly.

Islands Of Nyne

\n

A more sci-fi focused setting is a welcome change to the battle royale cluster, and Islands Of Nyne offers that up without deviating so far from the formula that you won't feel right at home dropping into a match.

\n

The lush jungle map and crazy futuristic buildings make for an entertaining backdrop, and the combat is more hardcore than you might expect from the genre.

Rapture Rejects

\n

Having played a whole lot of rounds of Joking Hazard with my family (think Cards Against Humanity, but even more offensive and with the Cyanide & Happiness art style) this has got to be the battle royale game I'm most looking forward to playing.

\n

Rapture Rejects goes for a different style altogether, and we're going to need twists like these if battle royale is going to thrive instead of hitting a rapidly-approaching bubble burst.

\n

This one will feature a top down, isometric style, and of course some very NSFW humor. You've goal us to impress god with a truly epic kill count if you want to be let into heaven after being left behind during the rapture. The only way this could be better is if Madness Combat made a battle royale entry!

Call Of Duty Black Ops 4

\n

You know Fortnite is getting big when a free-to-play game that's technically still in beta inspired one of the largest yearly franchises in the world to ditch its story campaign entirely and instead go for a battle royale mode.

\n

That's good and bad news. Personally I'm one of those (apparently rare) players who actually really enjoyed the Call Of Duty campaigns and I horribly miss hearing Captain Price order Soap to plant some claymores by the door, but times they are a-changing.

\n

At the same time, its a good bet Black Ops 4 is going to add a layer of polish to this crowded battle royale field that should inject some life in for those tired of the current reigning kings.

\n

This entry arrives a bit earlier than normal, showing up in October instead of the usual November / December COD release schedule. Check out our definitive pre-ordering guide here before it lands this fall!

There's no question that battle royale is the biggest trend in gaming right now, and the hype train is plowing full speed ahead with no signs of slowing down.

\n

There have already been a slew of recently release titles like Radical HeightsRealm Royale, and Totally Accurate Battlegrounds, which are well worth checking out if you are tired of playing the same matches of Fortnite and PUBG over and over.

\n

Those are just the opening salvo in the battle royale barrage, however, as dozens more are in early access, closed beta, or active development. Here we're rounding up some of the best and most exciting battle royale games due to land in 2018 and 2019!

Realm Royale Best Landing Locations Guide https://www.gameskinny.com/fgvy9/realm-royale-best-landing-locations-guide https://www.gameskinny.com/fgvy9/realm-royale-best-landing-locations-guide Wed, 20 Jun 2018 13:44:57 -0400 Ty Arthur

The genre may be getting a bit crowded, but Realm Royale offers a vastly different experience than your typical battle royale entry with five classes, abilities found randomly in chests, and an equipment forging mechanic.

As with any BR style game, you need to strategically pick your landing zone to maximize your loot and minimize danger when you land. If you're just getting started, we've got you covered with some of the best loot locations to land at in Realm Royale!

Landing near a chest immediately is crucial to surviving the match!

Best Realm Royale Landing Spots

The map is separated out into the Badlands, Everfrost, Greenscape, Sanctuary and Tropics sections, and each have some killer spots if you know where to look.

The outer edges of the map will get covered in fog quickly, but there's a twist here -- the fog rolls in a random direction in each match instead of just going towards the center every time, so you need multiple landing spots picked out ahead of time.

Here are all the best Realm Royale loot locations and landing spots at the moment:

Southwest Of Lost Forge

Area: Tropics

Between Lost Forge and Autumn Fields at the bottom of map grid C6 is a small collection of buildings that aren't usually heavily traveled. You can grab a ton of great gear here and then either hoof it east to Autumn Fields or west to Lost Forge for the forges to start crafting legendary gear. If the zeppelin and fog allow it, this is my personal favorite spot to land.

Lumberfall

Area: Greenscape

One of the best spots overall to land is the southeast edge of Lumberfall, near the middle of the map at the top of grid D5. The middle of the wood walkway here almost always has a chest for grabbing a weapon as soon as you land, and the buildings at either end of the walkway typically have chests as well, so you can be well equipped immediately.

This area tends to be heavily populated though, so if you don't get the chest first, prepare to run for your life. Since its so centrally located, you don't usually have to worry about outrunning the fog right away.

Gun Town Outskirts

Area: Badlands

You are near the border of the map here, so you usually can't stay in this location too long unless you luck out with the fog direction. If you land on the outskirts of Gun Town it isn't hard to find chests in all the buildings and then wait for other people to pop into view.

Jade Gardens

Area: Greenscape

This is a high traffic, high reward type area. Typically plenty of other people will land here, but there's lots of buildings for cover. If you land just off to the side of the forge, you can typically grab a chest in one of the buildings very quickly and then dodge inside to stay out of the line of fire and wait for everyone else to kill each other. When someone else goes for the forge, head in and take them out!

Icehaven

Area: Everfrost

Landing at the southern edge of the frozen lake near the forge virtually guarantees an easy chest, and once the smoke clears from killing any other players you can immediately forge your legendary item -- just be prepared to run quickly if the fog is moving southwest!

Underpass / West Of Underpass

Area: Everfrost/Greenscape Border

If you land on the right hand side of the mountain, a chest is found directly inside the tunnel, so you can be armed quickly and then run inside the cave to find cover and use a forge.

If you exit out the left side of the mountain, a bunch of buildings can also be found on the border to Greenscape. This can actually be a better landing spot than Underpass itself, since people tend to make a beeline for the chest in the tunnel. By hitting these buildings first you can let other players take each other out and then head into Underpass to mop up.

The weakest class weapon is the Mage's Stone Spear, which is still head-and-shoulders above any other common  weapon in the game. It allows you to shoot three consecutive projectiles in a span of a second and deal 675 damage.

\n

Other than that, mages usually mostly rely on their abilities rather than weapons, so no wonder that Stone Spear is weaker in comparison to other weapons from all other classes.

The best part about Slug Rifle is that no matter how close or far away you shoot from your target, you can be sure that it will deal exactly the amount of damage each of the rarities indicate.

\n

For example, if you have a legendary Slug Rifle, you can deal 700 points of damage even if you just barely touched your enemy. That's almost as much as any other exclusive class weapon. The only reason it's worse than the Heirloom Rifle is that it doesn't have a hitscan.

Plasma Launcher is another example of a powerful weapon with a downside. Just like Sniper Rifle being super effective at long range, but completely useless in the close range; Plasma launcher is great at close combat, but is highly inefficient at long range.

\n

Despite that it is still an incredibly powerful weapon, which can completely destroy any type of armor in just two shots. Since the firing rate is really high, you will easily deal with any type of enemy, but again only at close range.

Assassins benefit a lot from playing with their exclusive weapon. Sniper Rifle is the most accurate weapon in the game and probably has the highest damage as well, if you manage a headshot in a long range.

\n

However, it can be punishing to use the Sniper Rifle in mid to close range. That's why assassins should always have an Heirloom Rifle as an alternative to the Sniper Rifle for the close combat.

If you don't want to bother with class exclusive weapons that must be made in the Forge, you can always find one of the Heirloom Rifles and use it to your advantage in any class.

There are four types of this rifle, out of which the legendary one is the best, obviously. Also it's a hitscan weapon that can bring the accuracy of your shots up a notch, and the critical damage stacks pretty high as well.

The only other weapon that can seriously compete with the Hunter's Longbow is the Warrior's Throwing Axe. It complements the mobile Warrior class really well with its fast speed of throwing and high damage.

This Hunter class exclusive weapon is by far the best weapon in the game. If you don't play Hunter yet, then you need to switch as soon as possible. Reportedly Hi-Rez will nerf the bow very soon, although no exact dates have been announced yet.

Longbow is both very precise and deals a lot of damage. Fully charged bow can deal up to 1000 points of damage and the projectiles fly really fast. Overall, this is the best weapon Realm Royale has to offer at this moment.

Realm Royale Class Guide: Best Builds For Duos https://www.gameskinny.com/cmic6/realm-royale-class-guide-best-builds-for-duos https://www.gameskinny.com/cmic6/realm-royale-class-guide-best-builds-for-duos Tue, 12 Jun 2018 10:58:21 -0400 Zack Palm

Realm Royale stands out from other battle royale games with the introduction of classes. These classes vary from one another, not only from their passives, but how they play with their unique legendary weapons and abilities.

Before you land into the Realm with your partner, you should know what classes work best together and how to get the most from your abilities. While a good build in Realm Royale can make the world of difference, a pair of teammates communicating together can change the outcome of any fight. Here's a series of builds you and your partner can use to claim the Crown Royale!

Hunter and Warrior

Hunter
  • Weapons
    • Shotgun
    • Longbow
  • Abilities
    • Proximity Mine
    • Flare
Warrior
  • Weapons
    • Heirloom Rifle
    • Throwing Axe
  • Abilities
    • Charge
    • Shielding Potion

This build focuses on getting the Warrior as close to your enemies as possible to deliver devastating damage, quickly. The one problem about this strategy lies in the fact that the Warrior lacks a considerable amount of range. While their Throwing Axe does a great deal of damage, it doesn't have the best range and they need to switch to their other weapon in order to remain vital. But, because they're charging in immediately they won't have time.

To make up for it, the Hunter keeps the Warrior protected with their Longbow from a good distance away. As the Hunter highlights enemies using their flare, they can position their Proximity Mine close to the fighting. If you and your partner communicate fast enough, you two can use the Warrior's aggressive charge to lead enemies towards a well-placed mine to soften them up.

The Hunter's ranged barrage can keep them occupied, and the Warrior's shielding potion can keep them alive as they charge in to meet the enemy head on.

Warrior and Engineer

Warrior
  • Weapons
    • Rifle
    • Heirloom Rifle
  • Abilities
    • Flask of Healing
    • Net Shot
Engineer
  • Weapons
    • Plasma Launcher
    • Heirloom Rifle
  • Abilities
    • Barricade
    • Deploy Turret

If close range doesn't suit your needs, this build should allow you and your partner to stay a safe distance away from your enemies. When things start to go south the Engineer can place down use their Barricade ability to protect you. The great benefit of this ability is you're still capable of firing past the shield to pepper your enemies while their shots get absorbed by the shield. This ability also gives your team the opportunity to replenish your armor or health.

That's also a problem with this build: you don't want to remain in a single location for too long. You and your partner have to keep moving. To help with that, the Warrior can throw their Flask of Healing down behind the Barricade to give you both a rush of health. This means you can make recovering your armor a higher priority.

Both classes will need to have a long range rifle equipped to get the most of this build, preferably the Heirloom Rifle. If your enemies get too close, the Engineer can always spawn a turret to supply some extra firepower and the Warrior can pull out the traditional rifle for some medium range engagements.

Assassin and Hunter

Assassin
  • Weapons
    • Crossbow
    • Sniper Rifle
  • Abilities
    • Concussion Bomb
    • Smoke Screen
Hunter
  • Weapons
    • Hierloom Rifle
    • Long Bow
  • Abilities
    • Withdraw
    • Flare

When you trust your ally to have your back, you two can confidently dominant the competition from a safe distance.

This devastating combo features the Assassin's Sniper Rifle starting every engagement. Because this weapon features the only scope in the game, enemies won't know your location until its too late. The one downside is the Sniper Rifle takes a great deal of time to reload. As a result, the Hunter's Long Bow can keep up the consistent barrage while the Assassin reloads their rifle to deal crippling damage to anyone they hit with it. The Assassin better know how to aim!

And if your enemies do make their way over to you, both classes feature a great getaway ability, Withdraw and Smoke Screen. These abilities will confuse your adversaries for a time, but not for long. In order to make sure they don't sneak up on you, the Hunter's Flare ability will highlight anyone attempting to ambush you. Additionally, the Assassin's Concussion Bomb can push back any foe attempting to get in close.

Engineer and Mage

Engineer
  • Weapons
    • Shotgun
    • Hierloom Rifle
  • Abilities
    • Deploy Turret
    • Fire Bomb
Mage
  • Weapons
    • Stone Spear
    • Poison Pistol
  • Abilities
    • Ice Block
    • Explosive Flask

You may be surprised to learn the Engineer and Mage classes work well in close range engagements, especially when they use their abilities in sync with each other.

Any good engagement should start off with the Engineer throwing down a Fire Bomb to distract the enemy. The goal isn't to rely on this damage, but scare your foes enough to where they disperse and pull away from each other. Once they're separated, the Mage can use their Explosive Flask on a single target and slow them down. The Engineer can finish them off with some well-timed shotgun blasts, and their turret. Because the Explosive Flask slows down your enemies, the turret can make short work of them as they struggle to get away.

You'll have to be aggressive with this build. Because the Engineer can heal armor progressively out of combat, they can serve as the front line. If the Mage ever runs low on health, they can always pop their Ice Block ability and regain it back. But they're vulnerable once they pop out of this state. The Engineer will have to use their turret to compensate for the lost firepower during this time.

Assassin and Warrior

Assassin
  • Weapons
    • Sniper Rifle
    • Hierloom Rifle
  • Abilities
    • Smoke Screen
    • Sensor Drone
Warrior
  • Weapons
    • Shotgun
    • Throwing Axe
  • Abilities
    • Net Shot
    • Charge

This build works much like the Warrior and Hunter build, however the hard damage dealer in this build, the Assassin, needs a little bit more assistance with their long range weapon. Unlike the Hunter's unique weapon, the Sniper Rifle takes quite a bit time to reload. As a result the Assassin needs to make sure their shots count every time. The Warrior can make this less of a challenge.

During an engagement, the Warrior should rush into a fight using the ability Charge. When you've chosen a specific enemy to target, the Warrior hits them with their Net Shot ability, which slows them down by 50 percent for a short amount of time. This is where the Assassin takes advantage of that slow movement speed and hits them with their powerful Sniper Rifle. From there, the Assassin can switch to their Heirloom Rifle and continue to fire at anyone still alive.

The Assassin can use their Sensor Drone ability before entering a building to pinpoint all of the enemy locations. The Warrior can use this knowledge to plan their strategy before flushing them out. If things get hot, the Assassin can toss down their Smoke Screen to pull away. This ability always works great if you need to do a quickly reload any of your weapons.

These builds should serve you well as you work your way up the ranks in Realm Royale and continue to claim the precious crown!

Realm Royale Beginner's Guide: Becoming a Battle Royale Ninja https://www.gameskinny.com/9kzdd/realm-royale-beginners-guide-becoming-a-battle-royale-ninja https://www.gameskinny.com/9kzdd/realm-royale-beginners-guide-becoming-a-battle-royale-ninja Fri, 08 Jun 2018 10:57:45 -0400 Zack Palm

Realm Royale from Hi-Rez studios is the newest battle royale on the block. Currently in alpha, now's the perfect time to jump in and figure out the best winning tactics -- and how the game works -- before servers get overloaded (Ninja's playing it, so that probably won't be long).

The game does have several differences from PUBG and Fortnite. You're not building anything complex in which to defend yourself, and you're not taking bullet drop into account. You're playing a new, unique experience where you won't know every little detail as soon as you jump in.

Knowing that, here's some advice to consider the next time you find yourself making your next superhero landing into the Realm!

Always Have A Supportive Ability Equipped

The five classes in Realm Royale have four different abilities you can choose from, and you can have two abilities equipped at all times. While the classes have unique powers, many of them have supportive abilities designed to keep you and your team alive. Some classes have more than one supporting ability, so discuss with your team what you need to equip to optimize your team composition.

A warrior holds a pistol and kneels behind a shield in Realm Royale

Here's a class list of supportive items you'll want to keep your eye out for:

Warrior
  • Flask of Healing: Throw a healing flask on the ground and give health to your allies in a small area. This works great during an active firefight if someone needs heals, and they can't disengage to pop a potion. It also works for yourself, too!

Shielding Potion: Like the Flask of Healing, you throw a flask on the ground to grant your allies, or yourself, a shield for a brief period of time. Again, another optimal ability to have up your sleeve in the middle of an engagement. It doesn't last long, though, so keep that in mind.
Engineer
  • Barricade: You deploy a shield to block enemy fire. This is an excellent ability to cover a building's entrance and give your teammates a few seconds to recover their health or armor.

Healing Totem: This places a totem down and heals your allies for a few seconds in the immediate area. If you double this with the Barricade ability, your allies can focus on using armor potions and save their health potions for later.
Assassin
  • Sensor Drone: You toss a small drone that sticks to a surface and reveals any nearby enemies for five seconds. Every team will want an Assassin to have this equipped so they move against any well-positioned enemy squad.
Mage
  • Wall: This summons a protective wall up from the ground. It works similarly to the Engineer's Barricade ability, but it doesn't provide as much cover.
Hunter
  • Flare: You fire a flare and reveal enemies in a large area. This works just like the Assassin's Sensor Drone, though it covers a larger area.

Remember, while Realm Royale is a battle royale game, the developers want you to work with other classes in your squad! Communicate with your teammates and figure out what abilities you want to grab. Every ability provides an opportunity to tip fights in your favor.

Use The Forge And Craft Multiple Items

There are multiple forges all over the Realm Royale map, and you need to take advantage of them to get the edge on other players. You can carry up to 200 shards at a time.

The forge options menu shows choices, their forge times, and shard costs

When you get there, use as many shards as you have on you. However, make crafting your legendary weapon your top priority, because while armor helps a lot, you don't want to give your enemies the chance to fire back at you!

Once you get the first item going, don't stop there. How many shards do you have left? What else can you craft? A forge can have multiple items going at the same time at a single location. Craft your items within seconds of each other! But remember, you can only craft one of each item at a single forge - so don't stick around once you've finished everything!

It's important to note that potions take 30 seconds to make and the other items take a full 60 seconds. If you have to rush out of there, at least leave with a handful of potions.

You do not have to sit at the forge fire to craft your items, either. You can wander around the building as much as you'd like. Use this to your advantage, because your enemies may be drawing closer.

When you craft an item, smoke lights up from the top of the forge and gives away your position. Rally your teammates to cover the entire area -- and make sure you're ready to grab your items at a moment's notice!

Realm Royale Fake Out!

Use the smoke from the forge as a strategic call sign!

As the storm circle gets smaller and smaller, coordinate with your teammates to continually gather shards throughout your journey. This way, when you're all geared up and have the best items at your disposal, you can set a trap at the final forge by crafting a bogus item. This way you'll trick other players into revealing their positions.

When they run in to rush your position, ambush them -- they'll never expect it.

A Mage looks up at the smoke coming from a forge

This tactic won't always work since the circle remains a random mistress, but keep this in mind the next time the circle wraps around a small city and you see a forge somewhere inside it. However, be careful, your enemies might think of the same ploy.

Do your best to patiently approach any situation to ensure you're the last team standing.

Jump Down On Your Enemies and Damage Them

The superhero landing in Realm Royale not only looks cool, but it serves an excellent purpose in the game. You can use it as an attack and deal a lot of damage to your enemies.

You do this by optimizing your character's jump ability. Not every class can do this, though. Only the Warrior, the Engineer, and the Mage can.

So how do you pull off a superhero landing? Essentially, you'll want to perform a basic jump, and then at the full height of it, activate your jump ability. This sends you straight up into the air, and if you don't hit anything on the way down, you can land on enemies and do some damage.

A mage performs a superhero jump down

Keep in mind, however, that there are several disadvantages to performing this attack. When you land, you'll find it takes about a second to recover from the impact. A skilled enemy may use this opportunity to hit you with a melee weapon or an ability if you didn't turn them into a chicken first.

Another is the fact you're probably away from your allies.

Picking a time to execute this air assault is critical. The best moment to do this is likely when you've already hit your enemy several times from afar and they're now attempting to disengage from the fight. Definitely reserve this attack for a finishing move or an ambush where your allies can support you.

This attack is not a good idea when you're playing alone.

You Cannot Shoulder Swap

You'll find this as frustrating as you find it in FortniteRealm Royale does not have a shoulder swap button, and there's no way to perform one.

As a result, you need to plan your long distance engagements against other players. They'll have a different perspective of you, and you don't want to leave yourself exposed. If you suddenly get shot and you can't locate the shooter, it's better to pull away. You can find plenty of potions to patch yourself up and return later -- if you survive.

A hunter kneels in Realm Royale building as she aims a rifle toward mountains in the distance

There's no worse feeling than dying to someone who barely had you in their line of sight. Sometimes you can't see them because an obstacle obstructs your vision and they get the better of you.

Check your sights constantly and never give your enemy an advantage over you.

---

These tips should keep you and your squad alive longer in Realm Royale -- or better yet, secure a win. Because the game was just released, you can expect these tactics to change as the developers tweak weapons, abilities, and mechanics.

Another entry in the battle royale genre enters the fray, this time from Hi-Rez Studios, called Realm Royale, and is currently in Alpha.

Having played a number of other games from Hi-Rez Studios, such as Smite and Paladins, I found myself downloading this game with a level of skepticism and worry. What would these developers know about creating a battle royale game, in a world where Fortnite dominated everything on the topic?

Realm Royale may have a long way to go, but it felt like a pleasant surprise all the way from falling to the ground, to nearly earning my first victory.

Something's Already Different - You Get Classes!

The start of the game immediately feels familiar: you start the match on an island, outside of the main map, and you’re surrounded by the other players you’re about to fight. Though, you can’t think too much about this because this is where you choose your class.

No, you did not mistakenly find yourself in a RPG.

You pick to play as one of five different classes: Warrior, Engineer, Assassin, Mage, or Hunter. Each class looks different, comes with a unique set of passives, abilities, and have a single unique weapon. Everyone starts out with a basic knife and a jump ability; your starting jump ability is determined by your class.

If you do not pick a class before the a match starts, you automatically play as the Warrior.

Though, some things never change: the jump!

First Jump Into A Beautiful Setting

While the class choices felt like a unique trait to add to the game, the start of my first Realm Royale match rubbed me the wrong way. It all felt too familiar. It was everything you'd expect from a standard battle royale pitch: spawn on an island, jump off an air ship, fight against 99 other players, and be the last one standing.

This feeling of familiarity didn't last long.

There were two things that stood out to me upon closer inspection of my inaugural jump -- the first were these icons on the map. These anvils, which I later learned were forges, were scattered all across the map. I had no idea what of their purpose or how they worked, but I knew players were going to land all over them. I stayed far away from those anvils during my first few games.

The second intriguing detail I noticed was during my fall. I observed my character did not have a parachute attached to their back.

I kept expecting to hear the "Whoosh!" of a glider, or anything, to slow my descent so I could properly angle my fall closer to a building to start my looting frenzy, but it never arrived. It wasn't until my character landed hard on the ground in the most epic of superhero landings did I realize these characters were stronger than the average person from PUBG or the characters you played in Fortnite -- they were on a different level.

This was where it clicked for me that Hi-Rez had something different here, and they were going to have fun with it.

For those who have followed the game's development or have played Hi-Rez's, Paladins, you may notice a lot of the structures and graphics feel like they were pulled from the Paladins universe. It's because they were.

Initially, this game was intended to be an add-on to Paladins. At some point, the developers pulled away from this and decided to make it a separate entry. Realm Royale felt like a medieval fantasy world, not like Lord of the Rings, but more akin to World of Warcraft. It was different from Fortnite, too.

While I enjoyed the background, I didn't have time to appreciate everything. The fighting ensued almost immediately.

The Same Formula With Different Mechanics

When I got over how phenomenal my landing looked, I saw other players had already landed nearby! I firmly relied on my previous expertise gained from my other battle royale games and entered the first medieval, fantasy house I could find and started looting. I chose to play as the Engineer class because its passive was when I had missing armor, I would regain 5 armor points back every second  -- a useful tool for someone just starting out!

The first crate I opened had gauntlets and a revolver inside of it. I opened up the rest of the chests in the house and found a rifle, an exclusive Engineer ability, a turret, and a helmet.

The next house had fewer items, and many of them I couldn't use. Instead of leaving these items for someone else to pick up, I disenchanted them. Disenchanting broke the items down and turned them into shards. I didn't know what shards did, but I had plenty of them in every match!

It didn't take long to run into a number of other players equipped and ready to fight. Plenty of them had a partner at their side, which was bad for me because I did not party up with another person. I fought hard and did my best. During my battles I was able to take out a few, though many times I was completely outmatched. After learning a great deal and finding a weapon combo I liked, I nearly won one of my games!

Combat may feel a bit difficult during your first few games. You'll find its hard to hear when you've taken damage from an enemy during an engagement, since the weapon sounds are pretty load. Make sure you're watching your health and armor during your fights!

When I died, my character turned into a chicken with a white flag. The first time this happened, I was laughing too hard to notice this was the game's revive mechanic. On my second death I was more aware and prepared for it.

How it works is when you die, if you survive 30 seconds as the chicken you get to come back. While I never respawned from the chicken form, I enjoyed knowing this was not a party-exclusive feature. I could revive on my own!

The final thing I discovered was that every player comes with their own mount they can summon for increased mobility. While a great piece to add, it made the bite of the circle feel less fierce. I was never worried about dying to it, unless I wasn't paying attention or it was at the end of the game and I had nowhere to go.

The Gear, Weapons, and Abilities in Realm Royale

After several games, here's what I learned about the basics of Realm Royale's looting system.

You can loot from three different objects: a chest, a sleeker chest, and a crate. The standard chests contain random armor, weapons, and abilities. The sleeker chests only have weapons in them. And the crates only store potions, which you use to replenish your lost armor and health. There's a crate that air-drops from the sky, but its location is plainly displayed on the map, until someone loots it.

The weapons in Realm Royale are not elegant or fast. They're slow-paced and hold small amounts of ammunition at a time. For example, the "rifle" in the game fires off 8 shots before you need to reload it. The pistols in the game come with more ammo, but don't do as much damage. You can also loot a sword, and it does not have finite uses. Hack and slash to your heart's content!

You're limited to holding two weapons and two abilities at any time. The abilities are class exclusive, and if you loot something your class can't equip you turn it into shards.

Though, here's a great thing to note: there's no ammo in this game. You automatically have all the ammo you need. Additionally, there's no inventory management, only weapon and abilities management. What a relief!

Your character can equip four different armor pieces: a helmet, a breastplate, gloves, and boots. If a player shoots off your armor, you can replenish those lost points with the armor potion. You do not have to find new armor once its gone. They treat armor as if it were health.

None of the armor you equip changes the appearance of your character. While unfortunate, this leaves the door wide open for Hi-Rez to rake it in big by selling unique class skins and items later on.

All items have a rank: grey for common, green for rare, purple for epic, and orange for legendary. You can find the first three tiers throughout the entire map in chests. But you have to create legendary items at the forge, the anvil icons I mentioned earlier!

Hi-Rez included a great tool where any item you find on the ground displays an upwards pulsating arrow, if it's better than what you currently have equipped. This makes looting a lot faster!

The Forge

Here is where you use those shards you've been amassing since the start of the game. At the forge! There you can craft legendary items, such as your class' weapon, armor, class abilities, and potions.

These locations do not have limited uses. You can craft as much as you like, as long as you have enough shards. Additionally, you can craft multiple items at once.

Using the forge comes with a price: everyone nearby knows you're using it. They won't hear a sound, but there's smoke coming out from the top. If you see a smoke stack coming up from the tower of a forge, you know there's players inside working on crafting legendary items.

Party Up

So far, my biggest worry about the game is the fact that I have to choose between Duo or Squad matches. I have to choose between having a friend join me, or getting placed with a random person.

No solo queue is available, but if you're too eager to wait for your friends, you can join a Duo match and not have an ally drop with you. This makes the game more difficult as many players will have a partner with them.

This problem may get amended in the future, but there's no word on when, or if, to expect this. It's a bold move by the Hi-Rez team to not include this during their launch, but they may have other plans around this choice.

Though, if you take a closer look at the classes, you may notice there's a reason Hi-Rez did not make a solo mode available.

The abilities available to the classes feel like they were designed for players to create team dynamics.

For example, if you play as the Engineer, you have an ability where you can spawn a healing totem to heal yourself and an ally. If your buddy chose to play as the Warrior, they have an ability where they give you a protective shield to make you invulnerable to damage.

The two classes complement each other, and if you were to play either on your own, sure, you'd do fine. Though you're missing something when you don't play with a partner!

Hi-Rez knows what they've made. They've made a co-operative battle royale game where the players don't want to have the same class as their party members. They want you and your partner to think about your abilities and choose your play style wisely.

Get Ranked!

After a few matches you may notice you've received a ranking on the "Player Rating" icon on the main menu. I assume Hi-Rez added this to give players a higher quality matchmaking experience.

This may indicate future plans of making Realm Royale into a truly competitive Battle Royale game. How well this works out rests on how the quality of their matchmaking service and the intensity of player matches.

You Ready To Drop?

This certainly feels like the Hi-Rez team extensively played PUBG and Fortnite as they developed their own unique system. The graphics feel cartoonish like Fortnite, but the gear you find in chests all over the map make you want to check every house as the fog descends around you.

Because Realm Royale was just released, don't get too comfortable with how the game feels right now! Plenty will change during its development.

As of right now, Realm Royale sits as a unique entry in the battle royale genre. And if you want to figure out the nuts and bolts of the game while people figure things out, now's the best time.
