How to Get Around Mortal Kombat X PC’s Install Bug

Instead of a flawless victory, Steam's new install system needs a major overhaul.

Well, it seems that Steam’s new style of pre-loading and installing games has more than a few kinks to be worked out, as anyone who pre-ordered Mortal Kombat X on PC is now realizing. Currently, players can only get to the game’s menu screen and options menu, as the new Streaming Download style of installation just isn’t working right.

For those who don’t know, Steam’s new Streaming Download option is Valve’s new approach to combat long download and install times. It’s supposed to cut down on them by having a game’s content divided up into smaller packets that you download over time. Even if you have a lackluster internet connection, you can get started on playing a game much sooner; at least in theory.

In the case of Mortal Kombat X, players should have been able to access the game’s initial campaign missions and basic one versus one fighting and Practice Mode. Except instead of that, any attempt to play the game results in a crash. Packets are not going through properly, halting the download.

While there is currently no official word from Valve or NetherRealm Studios,  there is a work around, according to PC Gamer:

“The solution is to go to the MKX entry in Steam, where the packs are listed as DLC; click the checkbox next to each of them, and they’ll start downloading.” — PC Gamer

To clarify, when you have a Steam game with downloadable content, it will list that content below the game and let you include/exclude what content you want. Here is what you want to look for:

By cycling the various pieces of content, it will kickstart the download and at least the majority of the game’s content will install. Considering the troubled part of the download is related to the campaign, it may be best for PC players to hold off on the single-player until the developers patch it. At the very least, we’ve heard nothing about the multiplayer itself being impacted, other than that it is easy to say not a lot of players will be immediately online.
