It’s been a while, but Spotlight Pokémon for Pokémon XY is back. I can’t promise a new one every week, but it will happen more often. Look forward to videos showcasing the Spotlight Pokémon in the future. I love Scizor so much that I decided to make a fellow Technician, Breloom, for this week’s Spotlight Pokémon.
Breloom is a Grass/Fighting type that packs a punch, literally. It takes four times the normal damage from Flying type moves, and double damage from Fairy, Psychic, Poison, Ice, and Fire type moves. It takes half the normal damage from Dark, Rock, Ground, Grass, Electric, and Water type moves. All other types do normal damage to Breloom.
Beat Pokémon with pure strength
Breloom’s stats aren’t too impressive other than his high Attack. That high Attack stat mixed with the Technician ability and the right moveset, makes Breloom a real threat in a battle. It is definitely a Physical Sweeper, don’t expect Breloom to take many hits. The base stats are:
- HP: 60
- Attack: 130
- Defense: 80
- Special Attack: 60
- Special Defense: 60
- Speed: 70
These are the stats of my level 65 Breloom.
Breloom evolves from Shroomish at level 23. It has two normal abilities and one hidden ability. The normal abilities are Effect Spore and Poison Heal. The hidden ability is Technician.
Effect Spore has a 10% chance to cause Paralyze, Poison, or Sleep status to the opponent when Breloom is hit by a move that makes physical contact. This the least important of his abilities because the chance is so low. Also, Breloom is not able to take many hits anyway.
Poison Heal restores Breloom’s HP every turn that it has the Poison status. This is better than Effect Spore, but does not compare with the hidden ability, Technician.
Technician is the ability that makes Breloom shine. This ability multiplies the power of all moves, with a base power of 60 or lower, by 1.5. This is great because of the moves that Breloom can learn, especially Mach Punch.
Using Technician to its full potential
If you see a Breloom online, it will have Technician and you can count on a Mach Punch coming up. Mach Punch is a priority move, which means it will attack first, as long as the opponent doesn’t also use a priority move. It has a base power of 40, so it gets boosted by 1.5 times to 60 because of Technician. Mach Punch is also a Fighting move so it gets another 1.5 times boost for being the same type as Breloom (STAB). That makes the final base power of Breloom’s Mach Punch 90, which is amazing, especially for a priority move.
Two other moves that benefit from Technician that are good for Breloom, are Bullet Seed and Rock Tomb.
Bullet Seed has to be bred onto Breloom from another Pokemon; I used Exeggcute. It has a base power of 25 and is a Grass move, so it gets the same boosts as Mach Punch. The final base power is 56.25, but it hits 2-5 times, so that is a minimum of 112.5 base power and a max of 281.25. AS you can see, Bullet Seed is a very useful move. It isn’t priority though, so Breloom must live to get it off.
Rock Tomb is great because it has a base power of 60 and gets the Technician boost. This gives it a base power of 90 and it also lowers the Speed stat of the opponent. It is great for taking out Flying, Fire, and Ice Pokémon, three of Breloom’s weaknesses.
All the right moves
From experience, I highly recommend Spore as the last move. Only Shroomish can learn this and at level 45. You will need to keep Shroomish from evolving until it learns Spore. Breloom learns Mach Punch at 23, so you will need to use a Heart Scale to learn Mach Punch after it evolves.
Spore has a 100% chance to cause the Sleep condition on an opponent, so it really comes in handy.
You want to max it’s Attack stat for sure, the rest is personal preference. I split the remaining points between Defense and HP to give it more survivability. Another option is Speed so that you can go first and use Spore and/or Rock Tomb.
Adamant is the only nature you should get for Breloom because it raises Attack and lowers Special Attack.
