Onion Ocean in Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe proves that water levels in platformers don't have to be the worst. And if you find yourself motivated to go back and get all Onion Ocean Energy Spheres, you can consult this guide to grab them all up.
All Onion Ocean Energy Sphere Locations
There are 16 Energy Spheres across the four stages of Onion Ocean. Here's where to find each sphere, broken down by stage.
Level 3-1 Energy Spheres
There are three Energy Spheres you can find in the first stage of Onion Ocean.
3-1 Sphere 1
There will be a place early in this stage where you need hit a switch to start a raft moving. To get this sphere, have the Tornado copy ability. Once on the raft, break the bomb block once it appears above you. This will uncover a secret red star door.
Inside, there will be a key. Grab it and drop down to where there will be two switches. Be quick! Hit them and run up the platforms they spawn before the timer runs out. Use the key at the top ledge to unlock the door where the sphere is now yours to claim.
3-1 Spheres 2 and 3
The second two spheres in 3-1 are a reward for beating a Sphere Doomer miniboss. At the end of the Snow Ball special ability section, make sure to destroy the sandcastle with your snowball. This will open up the portal to the last two spheres.
Level 3-2 Energy Spheres
There are four Energy Spheres to track down in the second stage of Onion Ocean.
3-2 Sphere 1
After you defeat the Sir Kibble miniboss, pick up his Cutter ability. You will see the sphere below you, unreachable, on the next screen over. Keep walking until you find a platform tied to a rope you can cut. Drop this into the water and you can now swim back to the first sphere of the level.
3-2 Sphere 2
Grab the Spear ability from the bee warriors in the next underwater section. When you see a hidden switch in a gap, you will realize you can only hit it with the Spear. Doing so will reveal a hidden door and a room filled bomb blocks. Destroy them to gain access to the next Energy Sphere.
3-2 Sphere 3
This sphere can be found the section where you are stomping on enemies with a spiked boot. Near the end of this section you will see three red enemies all lined up in the air like a staircase, leading to a ledge.
Bounce off all three of them to reach the higher platform, where a golden block you can break with the boot will await you. Breaking it open, unlocks a red star door that will bring you right to the third sphere of 3-2.
3-2 Sphere 4
The final sphere is the hardest to miss. While dodging the eels in the next underwater section, you will see it hidden above some blocks. Break the blocks underneath the sphere to get in, but just don't get eaten by the eel below.
Level 3-3 Energy Spheres
There are four Energy Spheres to nab in the third stage of Onion Ocean.
3-3 Sphere 1
Take the Stone ability after defeating Moundo in a miniboss fight. To the right there is a hunk of meat floating above three floating star blocks. Get on top of them and down attack with the Stone to sink to the bottom of the area and find the sphere's hiding place.
3-3 Sphere 2
In the next area of the level, you will reach a part where you are at the top of the screen. You then have to choose between three paths to take downwards, but only one of them will lead you to the Energy Sphere. You only get one guess here or you will have to start the whole level over to get the sphere, so make it count!
Pick the switch on the far right and take that path down. This will lead you to the second sphere.
3-3 Spheres 3 and 4
During Monster Flame section at the end of the stage, stay on the lookout for a large ship with an octopus peeking out from under it. Watch for the octopus to poke its head out and when it does use your Monster Flame.
This will spawn a portal that will lead you to a Sphere Doomer. Defeating this sub-boss will reward you with the final two spheres of the stage.
Level 3-4 Energy Spheres
There are five Energy Spheres to collect in the fourth and final non-boss stage of Onion Ocean.
3-4 Sphere 1
Near the end of the section with the spinning spiky obstacles, you will see a red star door. Navigate around one of the spinning spikes to be able to bomb the entrance to the door. You can pick up a Sword ability here if you like.
Inside the door, the sphere is behind a locked door and there is a puzzle to get the key. You will first want to hit the red switch on the floor to make the enemies fall. Then, you will want to pull the blue ceiling switch to get the key and fruit to fall. Make sure to jump over the red switch on your way to pick up the key, or it will fall into the water and you will have to start this room over.
3-4 Sphere 2
At one point you will see a red star door. Inside it there will be a healing candy. You can get that if you like, but make sure to also check out the suspicious looking seaweed covered rock on the opposite side of a pillar from the door. You can enter a secret door here that will lead you to a room where the Energy Sphere is waiting at the top.
3-4 Sphere 3
Next, you will be running from a spiked ball. Look for an unbreakable (by Kirby) wall of steel blocks. Wait for the spike ball to roll through the blocks and it will reveal the next Energy Sphere.
3-4 Sphere 4
The next platforming section gives you bombs to carry through sections, avoiding enemies so the bombs can explode a golden block. If you can carry the second bomb through the second half of this area, you will be able to reach a wall of gold blocks and blow them up. Behind them are a 1up and the sphere.
3-4 Sphere 5
During the eel section at the end of the stage, you'll need a Spear power up.There is a point where you can branch off and go up instead of forward. Up here you will find the sphere behind a block with a bomb block on the inside that you can only hit with a Spear. Make sure to avoid the eels and get your reward.
