Elden Ring: How to Get the Spirit Calling Bell

Wondering where to find the Spirit Calling Bell in Elden Ring? Here's how to get it so that you can start summoning spirit ashes.

Elden Ring is full of Key Items. These objects are usually passive in nature and do everything from providing new crafting recipes to revealing new portions of the map. The Spirit Calling Bell is one such item, and it allows you to call NPC allies to your aid, provided you have Ashes in your inventory.

The quirky thing about Elden Ring is that you’ll likely come across spirit ashes well before you can actually summon them; finding the Spirit Calling Bell follows a quirky path. It’s understandable if you find yourself wondering how to summon spirits in the early going.

Though the game tells you that you can summon these ethereal allies, it doesn’t tell you there’s an item for that. And though you can get the Spirit Calling Bell very early on in Elden Ring (within the first 30 minutes), the process to do so isn’t straightforward, either.

How to Get the Spirit Calling Bell in Elden Ring

Once you enter the open world of Limgrave itself, go straight ahead. Interact with the NPC by the Site of Grace at The First Step. Once you do, a Guidance of Grace will lead you to the Church of Elleh just to the north. Rest at the Site of Grace here, and then follow the best starting path: heading east/northeast toward Agheel Lake.

You can click the link above to learn more about the best starting path for Elden Ring, but the short of it is this. From the Church of Elleh, follow the road located east of the holy site until you reach the Gatefront Ruins. From the Ruins, follow the eastern road just a bit until you see another Site of Grace. Rest here. u

When you do, you’ll meet Melina. Speak with her and agree when she asks you about the Erdtree. Here, she’ll give you the Spectral Steed Whistle to summon Torrent. Finish the dialogue, then use the Site of Grace to fast travel back to the Church of Elleh.

When you arrive, the ground of the church should be covered in fog, and Merchant Kale should be in some sort of trance. Look to the eastern side of the church to find a new NPC bathed in spectral blue light sitting on a wall.

This is the Witch Renna. Speak with her to obtain the Spirit Calling Bell, which she will give to you as long as you agree with her. If Renna doesn’t show up when you fast travel back to the Church of Elleh, try passing time to nighttime or fast travel to another Site of Grace and back again.

How to Use the Spirit Calling Bell in Elden Ring

The Spirit Calling Bell works automatically. It doesn’t need to be equipped. You can find it in your inventory under the Key Items section, alongside other objects like map fragments, cookbooks, and the Whetstone Knife.

We go over how to summon spirits in more depth here, but the gist is that you need both Spirits Ashes and the Spirit Calling Bell. Assign ashes to an equipment slot, then press the appropriate consumable input to use them, using FP in the process.
