How does Terraria just keep getting better? I don’t get it.
After Redigit’s hiatus and the massive 1.2 update in 2013, the game has just gotten waves of new content. Here we are three years later and the game is up to version 1.3.4.
As with most of Terraria‘s updates, this one is packed with new content. You can check out the full patch notes on the forums. As usual, they’re fairly hefty but aren’t massive this time around.
Some notable additions to the game in 1.3.4 are a new ability for players going the summoner route, letting them specify minion attacks. That’s alongside new enemies, two new mini-bosses and boss, and the addition of the Dungeon Defenders 2 cross-over invasion.
That last one is the meat of the update as it brings in a brand new invasion, new mechanics, and new gear to earn via a special vendor tied to the event: the Tavernkeep.
How to Find the Tavernkeep
Some players are having trouble finding the Tavernkeep NPC, and that’s understandable. After all, he can be anywhere! Luckily, there aren’t many restrictions on finding him, but here are some notes to keep in mind:
- The Tavernkeep NPC will spawn in a random location either above or below ground somewhere in your world as an “Unconscious Man.”
- The Unconscious Man will spawn in both new and old worlds.
- The Unconscious Man will spawn both during Hardmode and pre-Hardmode.
- The Lifeform Analyzer can show where he is like with other NPCs
- At the time of writing (November 15, patch day) the Unconscious Man has been spawning in oceans for many players, which is a bug. If you haven’t found him, check your oceans.
Once you set him free and have a free room for him, he will move in just like any other NPC.
The Tavernkeep sells some items for standard currency but most of his wares have to be bought with Defender Medals, which only drop during the cross-over invasions. He gives you a few Defender Medals to start, but you’re going to need a lot more to buy the high-end gear he’s got for sale.
The new Dungeon Defenders 2 cross-over content is by far the biggest chunk of new stuff in 1.3.4 and based on the gear the Tavernkeep has for sale, it’s well worth the effort.
Enabling World Seeds in 1.3.4
One new feature in the update that some may ignore is the new experimental seed feature. This spawns worlds off of seeds, much like some other sandbox games. This new addition should be great news for all PC, Mac, and Linux-based Terraria players and hopefully, it will grace other platforms in the near future.
Windows
Here’s how Windows users enable using seeds in Terraria 1.3.4:
- Make sure the game is not running
- Go to your Documents folder, then My Games, then the Terraria folder
- Right-click the “config.json” file and choose to open it in Notepad
- Look for “UseExperimentalFeatures”: false, not far down the list
- Change the “false” to “true” (no quotation marks, leave the comma after “true” as it was originally)
- Save the file
- Launch the game
Mac
- Make sure the game is not running
- Open your Finder by clicking “Go” at the top of your screen
- Hold “Option,” click “Library,” then open “Application Support”
- Open “Terraria” folder and double click “config.json”
- Look for “UseExperimentalFeatures”: false, not far down the list
- Change the “false” to “true” (no quotation marks, leave the comma after “true” as it was originally)
- Save the file
- Launch the game
Linux
- Make sure the game is not running
- Go to your Documents folder, then My Games, then the Terraria folder
- Right-click the “config.json” file and choose to open it in Notepad
- Look for “UseExperimentalFeatures”: false, not far down the list
- Change the “false” to “true” (no quotation marks, leave the comma after “true” as it was originally)
- Save the file
- Launch the game
Now, when you go to make a new world after you’ve chosen your world name the game will ask for a seed, you can choose to use one or leave it random.
It’s a relatively simple process that finally brings a relatively common feature in the genre to its most popular 2D entry.
While the world seed feature is currently experimental, which may cause crashing or other issues, it should be stabilized in upcoming updates to be a standard feature.
