Whether you are planning to make a villager trading hall or just want some company in your world, knowing how to breed villagers is a valuable Minecraft skill. We’ll walk you through the basics of making baby villagers in this Minecraft villager breeding guide.
How to Breed Minecraft Villagers
How to Make Baby Villagers in Minecraft
Breeding new villagers requires players to meet a specific set of conditions. If you do not meet all of the following conditions, the villagers will either not attempt to breed or fail to produce a new villager.
- You must have at least two adult villagers.
- The villagers must be in an enclosed space, either with or without a door.
- The space must contain at least three beds: one for each adult and one for the new child. If you’re planning on breeding multiple pairs of villagers, you’ll need one bed for each adult and one bed for each potential child.
- Players must throw one of the following food items into the enclosed space for the villagers. I recommend throwing extra to ensure a new baby villager is created.
- Beetroots
- Bread
- Carrots
- Potatoes
The space for breeding villagers can be as simple or as complicated as you want. For our example, all we did was build a two-block-high wall of oak planks around three beds.

Once the villagers and their beds have been contained, toss in the food of your choice. The villagers will pick it up. Once they both are holding food, the villagers will come together, causing hearts to appear.
Unlike other mobs, there is a chance for the breeding process to fail. That is why it is very important to give the villagers enough food to breed until they succeed. Once they do succeed, a baby villager will appear next to its parents.

What to do with Minecraft Villagers
All Minecraft Villager Job Blocks
Once you have plenty of villagers, it’s time to decide what to do with them. The best way to utilize villagers is by giving them jobs. Granting a villager a profession will allow you to trade with them for special items.
To give a villager a job, you’ll need to give them a specific job block. The following table contains all possible villager jobs and the blocks required for them.
| Profession | Job Block |
|---|---|
| Armorer | Blast Furnace |
| Butcher | Smoker |
| Cartographer | Cartography Table |
| Cleric | Brewing Stand |
| Farmer | Composter |
| Fisherman | Barrel |
| Fletcher | Fletcher’s Table |
| Leatherworker | Cauldron |
| Librarian | Lectern |
| Mason/Stone Mason | Stonecutter |
| Shepherd | Loom |
| Toolsmith | Smithing Table |
| Weaponsmith | Grindstone |
