Smelting Black Metal scraps in a blast furnace will give you black metal bars, which can be used for crafting top-tier swords and shields. Follow our steps below for acquiring all the skills necessary to use black metal in Valheim.

How to Find Black Metal in Valheim

Black metal scraps can be only obtained only one way in Early Acces: by killing Fulings, a tribe of goblin creatures that roam the Plains biome. There are three types of Fulings in Valheim that drop black metal:

  • Fuling (coins, black metal scrap, Fuling trophy)
  • Fuling Berserker (coins, black metal scrap)
  • Fuling Shaman (coins, black metal scrap, Fuling totem)

Even the smallest Fulings are very dangerous and can kill you in 1-2 hits if you’re not wearing at least iron armor.

If you stumble upon a camp of them, it’s even more dangerous, and it’s better to take a stealthy approach and kill them one by one.

How to Smelt Black Metal in Valheim

Black metal can only be smelted in blast furnace, which can be crafted using the following recipe:

  • 20x Stone
  • 5x Surtling Core
  • 10x Iron
  • 20x Fine Wood
  • 1x Artisan Table

Stone can be found almost anywhere on the ground. Iron can be found in Sunken Crypts and in the Swamp biome with Wishbone.

Surtling Cores drop from Surtlings, small fiery creatures that can be found in the Swamp biome, around fire geysers and rune stones. If you’re lucky, you can find them inside various dungeons, such as Burial Chambers.

Fine Wood comes from cutting down birch and oak trees located in the Meadows and Black Forest biomes. These types of trees can only be chopped down with a bronze axe, which can be acquired after beating Eikthyr, the very first boss in the game.

The Artisan Table can be crafted using a Dragon Tear, which drops from the fourth boss of the game, Moder. This black dragon can be summoned on the Mountain biome.

Once the blast furnace is ready, you can use it for smelting black metal bars and crafting the following items:
