You’ve built your first house in Animal Crossing: New Horizons — hooray! Except you realize you picked the completely wrong roof color, and you hate your mailbox color.
Fortunately, you can change the roof color in New Horizons, though you can’t do it freely until you reach a certain point. Here’s how changing your roof color works.
Changing Your Roof Color and Mailbox in Animal Crossing: New Horizons
Like earlier Animal Crossing games, you get the chance to pick a new roof color every time you upgrade your house in New Horizons. You’ll also have the option to customize your mailbox.
To unlock roof color customization at any time, you’ll need to expand your house so it has two additional rooms. And that’s going to take a while. Here’s the order of house expansions in New Horizons:
- Upgrade from tent to house — 5,000 Nook Miles
- Build your first home — 98,000 Bells
- Expand your main room — 198,000 Bells
- Add one new room — 368,000 Bells
- Add a second new room — 548,000 Bells
Fortunately, you don’t have to pay off that second room to change your roof color. Speak to Tom Nook at Resident Services after the upgrade that adds a second room, and he’ll make home customization a new option for you.
As you’d expect, changing your roof and mailbox color in New Horizons isn’t free. You’ll shell out 5,000 Bells each time. It’s a flat fee, though, meaning you can change both your roof color and mailbox color for just 5,000 Bells total.
On the bright side, you can choose from a huge variety of mailbox designs. It’s not just color; you can change the whole look and style if you want.
