Baldur’s Gate 3: How to Get the Mourning Frost in the Underdark

Craft a very rare weapon during Baldur's Gate 3's first act.

You should go out of your way to get the Mourning Frost in Baldur’s Gate 3. This is a very rare weapon, one of a select few that you can acquire during the game’s first act. However, you also need to obtain three specific materials just so you can craft it. Our guide discusses how to get the Mourning Frost so you can freeze your foes via ice spells.

How to Get the Mourning Frost in Baldur’s Gate 3

The components for the Mourning Frost are found in the Underdark. You need three items to craft it:

  • Icy Metal
  • Icy Crystal
  • Icy Helve

Before you start searching for these, I would advise you to avoid progressing too far into the story. At a certain point in the Shadow-Cursed Lands (Act 2), certain areas of the game will become inaccessible. As such, it’s imperative that you grab the materials when you can in the Underdark.

Where to Find Icy Metal

To get this material, you need to go to the Myconid Colony in the Underdark (X: 105; Y:-125). Talk to the Myconid leader, Spaw, and agree to eliminate the Duergar invaders. You’ll find them in the beach area in the center of the region.

If you want, you can also request aid from Glut, a Myconid who wants revenge on the Duergar. Just watch out since there’s a dilemma where Glut wants to usurp Spaw’s rule over the Myconids. Feel free to ignore that for now to avoid further hostilities in the colony.

In any case, once you’ve dealt with the Duergar, return to Spaw and tell him of the good news. This unlocks a small chamber near Derryth and Baelen (i.e. the NPCs from the Mushroom Picker quest). Inside this room, you’ll find a pale corpse that has the Icy Metal.

Where to Find Icy Crystal

The Icy Crystal is held by a character named Filro the Forgotten. You’ll find him in the Dread Hollow in the western edge of the Underdark map (X:-29; Y:-142). Filro is guarded by several Hooked Horrors. As such, I advise you to stay on higher group and just lure the hostiles one by one. In my case, I had a Monk handle the luring, since the class has high mobility. Once the Hooked Horrors were below my party, I peppered them with arrows and flashy spells.

After beating the Hooked Horrors, you can go ahead and look for Filro the Forgotten, who’s likely perched up a branch. Defeat him and loot the Icy Crystal from his corpse. Likewise, this particular area is important, as it’s where you can find the Sussur Bark to finish the Masterwork Weapon.

Where to Find Icy Helve

For the Icy Helve, we need to go to the eastern part of the map (X:118; Y:-252). Specifically, this is a section with several ledges leading to the top, where you’ll end up battling an Observer. This creature can remove the petrification of nearby soldiers, so you’d end up fighting more mobs than necessary. You can learn more in our Observer Beholder guide. Once all the enemies have been defeated, you can pick up the Icy Helve from Dhourn, one of the creature’s previous victims.

How to Craft Mourning Frost

Now that you have all three items, it’s time to craft the Mourning Frost in Baldur’s Gate 3. Simply open your inventory and right-click on one of the items. Then, drag the other two into the slots in the combination menu. When you click on the Combine button, the weapon will be automatically created.

The Mourning Frost has the following stats and perks:

  • Damage: 1d8 (1d6) bludgeoning; +1d4 cold.
  • Type: Quarterstaff
  • Heart of Ice: When dealing cold damage, the wielder deals an additional 1 cold damage.
  • Insidious Cold: Dealing cold damage has a chance to inflict the chilled status on a target.
  • +1 weapon enchantment
  • Ray of Frost cantrip

As you can see, this weapon is great for your spellcasters, or anyone who often uses a quarterstaff. By casting Ray of Frost or other cold elemental spells (i.e. Ice Storm), you can cause more damage and apply a status effect that makes them vulnerable to said element.

That’s how to get the Mourning Frost in Baldur’s Gate 3. Make the most out of it while you take on numerous foes. For more tips and tactics, visit our BG3 guides hub.
