I highly recommend starting out by leveling up Health and Stamina and then increasing damage stats only to the point of weapon requirements. More specifically, here’s a priority list of stat increases from crucial to non-impactful for early gameplay and a detailed explanation for each one:

  • Health: Leveling Health early will allow you to make more mistakes, avoid one-shot ranges of certain bosses, and generally allow you to gain more benefit from armor. Early level-ups should put at least 1 or 2 points into Health.
  • Stamina: Everything you want to do in combat in No Rest for the Wicked, from attacking and dodging to blocking and sprinting, requires Stamina. Increasing it will allow you to have lengthier bursts of activity before you need to rest.
  • Damage Stats: I highly recommend only increasing damage stats like Strength, Dexterity, Faith, and Intelligence when you need them for a weapon prerequisite — at least in the early game. The weapon’s damage stat will benefit a lot more from upgrades than from scaling stat increases anyway. This way, you can level up universally useful stats like Health and Stamina early, allowing you to perform better in fights. Then, when you find a weapon type you really like, you can invest a bit more into damage stats.
  • Equip Load: This stat isn’t a priority in the early game, but it does help slightly to stick to the Medium weight threshold with decent armor and weapons. So, put a point here only when you need to keep yourself in the Medium range.
  • Focus: Focus is the last on the list for the early game. It gets much more useful later when you gain access to various Rune attacks though.

Lastly, don’t be afraid to save points for a while before you decide on what weapon to invest in. A single point or two won’t make much of a difference, so saving them is better.
