Final Fantasy 15: How to Manually Drive & Unlock Regalia Type D

How to regain manual control of the Regalia at the start of the game and how to unlock the Regalia Type D.

Not much is as cruel as a game giving you a feature and then snatching it from your hands like some sort of two-faced uncle.

That’s exactly what happens with Final Fantasy 15, specifically in the game allowing you to manually drive the Regalia for a time and then making you sit in the passenger seat for a while. Ignis is an all right driver, but it’s much more fun to take the wheel as Noctis yourself.

You get a brief taste of driving on your own, and once you have that taste, you’ve got to have it again. Forever. Luckily, it doesn’t take too long for Ignis to let you take the helm again.

You only have to let Ignis drive the Regalia until the end of Chapter 3. Even if you’re a hardcore sidequester like myself, it’s worth rushing to the end of Chapter 3 just to sit in the driver’s seat again.

This all may sound unnecessary, but being able to manually drive the Regalia at the end of Chapter 3 is a lot sooner than players could at launch.

How to unlock the Regalia Type D

Okay, you can take manual control of your car now. What about taking it off the road and into the wild? For that you need the Regalia Type D, a modification for the car that was added to Final Fantasy 15 in a patch post-launch.

You can change to Type D by going to Hammerhead and talking to Cindy, then choosing the ‘Change to Regalia Type D’ option.

It really is as simple as that. There are no prerequisites for unlocking the Type D, so you can do it as soon as you are free to talk to Cindy and modify the Regalia.

Switching to the Regalia Type D is almost mandatory, as it makes traveling easier, even if it’s not as pretty as the standard model. You still may find yourself using Chocobos more often off-road, though. Getting stuck on bushes is a real bummer.
