Today’s the day all PlayStation 4 owners can hop into the Monster Hunter: World Iceborne beta, and there’s something new that wasn’t present in the original PlayStation Plus subscriber-only beta: the flying wyvern Nargacuga!

Nargacuga is classic monster, initially from Monster Hunter Portable 3rd way back when on the PSP (Shout out to the weapon trees on GameFAQs for that, by the way. Saved my life.) and a staple in Generations. Don’t be fooled by its cuter-than-average appearance, Nargacuga is a killing machine and worthy adversary for any hunter.

Finding Nargacuga in the Iceborne beta isn’t really all that hard. It has a chance to spawn in the quest ‘Great Devourer, Great Jagras’, which may or may not be ironically labelled as a beginner quest.

How to Find Nargacuga

Nargacuga seems to have a chance to spawn in ‘Great Devourer, Great Jagras’ normally, but for a sure thing:

  • Repeat the quest ‘Great Devourer, Great Jagras’ until the quest text changes to say “we’ve received reports of another mysterious monster!”
  • Head to area 9, Nargacuga is always in area 8 or 9

How to Grind on Nargacuga

Because why not.

If you want to try your hand at hunting this monster over and over, you can do the following:

  1. Accept and enter the quest when it states there’s another mysterious monster
  2. Load in and avoid the Great Jagras completely
  3. Seek out Nargacuga in area 8 or 9
  4. Slay Nargacuga
  5. Leave the quest via the menu
  6. Enter and do it all again

The “mysterious monster” modifier will not disappear as long as you do not finish the quest, meaning you can keep leaving and re-entering to find Nargacuga as long as you do not kill the Great Jagras. Killing the Great Jagras will reset the quest, most likely to its normal state until you get lucky again.

Are there more secrets to be found in this round of the Monster Hunter: World Iceborne beta? We’ll have to see, but for now, take the time to hunt down this new addition to the game while you still have the chance before the beta closes on June 30.
