Fixing Initialization Failed in Age Of Mythology: Retold

First of all, you might want to double check if your PC is within the minimum, or even better the recommended system requirements. An old CPU seems to be the common culprit for many players stuck on the loading screen, but any of those components could be the problem. Make sure to update your drivers, too.

For your convenience, here are the official minimum requirements for Age Of Mythology: Retold.

  • CPU: Intel i3-4130 or AMD FX 4350 at 2.4GHZ+ and AVX support
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 645 or AMD Radeon Vega 8 or Intel Iris Graphics 550
  • RAM: 8 GB
  • OS: Windows 10 version 18362.0
  • DirectX: Version 12

Reinstalling Visual C++ Redistributable

This wouldn’t be the first game to be fixed by reinstalling Visual C++ and it won’t be the last. Of course, this only applies to Windows machines. Your mileage might vary, but this seems to be the most common solution to the problem.

If you’re unsure which version of Visual C++ to install, chances are you need the x64 version. Make sure to restart your PC once the setup is complete.

Fixing Double Gameinput host service App

Gameinput is a process common to all Windows machines that processes the inputs of gamepads and other peripherals. In certain circumstances, for example when performing a less-than-ideal upgrade to a new version of Windows, your machine could be stuck with two of the same Gameinput process.

You can check for this issue by opening Task Manager by right clicking on the taskbar and pressing the “Task Manager” button. Then move to the Processes tab, sort by Name, and look for “Gameinput host service App”.

If you find more than one Gameinput process, open their respective folders by right clicking on the processes and pressing Open File Location. One should be in Program Files (X86) and the other in Windows/System32.

As is the norm with Windows, you should not mess with the System32 folder. Instead, check the date of both Gameinput executable files. The one in Program Files (X86) should be the older file. Use the Windows uninstall utility to delete this older version of the program.
