Tips to Get More Star Fragments in New Horizons

Getting Star Fragments is pretty simple. All you need to do is wish on a star. To do that, just tilt the right stick up, wait for a star to come loose from the firmament, and press “A” as it races across the sky.  When doing this action, it’s important to make sure you’re not holding anything. Additionally, it’s much easier to tell if a star is coming with your volume turned up, as you’ll hear a little twinkling sound.

The following in-game day, head out and walk up and down the beaches, where you’ll find a number of scattered star fragments.

There’s also a chance to get a meteor shower, but its appearance isn’t completely certain. It only happens on clear nights but isn’t guaranteed on every clear night. Sometimes, your island neighbors will give you a clue by mentioning how the weather is perfect for shooting stars, and Isabelle will occasionally make an announcement.

If Celeste is in your town, it doesn’t always guarantee a meteor shower, but it always is a pleasure to see her.

Star Fragment Island

Luckily, due to the 2.0 update, you now have a higher possibility of gaining star fragments. You’ll be able to go on Kapp’n’s boat tours, where he’ll take you to a random mystery island. This gives you the opportunity to visit a Star Fragment Island, which will give you a plethora of star fragments. Don’t get too carried away, though, as you only have a maximum of 20 star fragments. If you keep wishing after that, there won’t be any effects.

It can be hard to find a Star Fragment Island (3.14% chance!), but don’t feel too deterred, as Katrina can be a massive help when trying to find this elusive island. When testing your everyday luck, it can lead to a stroke of luck with belongings. This will increase the likelihood of you being able to find this island.

The Star Fragment Island is very beneficial as you don’t only find Star Fragments by wishes, but you can also find them dispersed on the beach, as well as breaking them from rocks. Star Fragment spawn rate on rocks are:

  • Star Fragment: 14%
  • Large Star Fragment: 2%
  • Zodiac Star Fragment: 7% for each Zodiac Star Fragment

When you’re on the Star Fragment Island, the type of Zodiac Star Fragment you may find is not impacted by the time of year, unlike your regular island.

Types of Animal Crossing Star Fragments in New Horizons

As mentioned, there are three different kinds of fragments:

  • Star Fragments (85% chance of spawning)
  • Large Star Fragments (5% chance of spawning)
  • Zodiac Star Fragments (10% chance of spawning)

The Zodiac Star Fragments on your regular island are determined by the astrological calendar, meaning you’ll only be able to get them depending on the time of year:

  • Capricorn: December 22-January 19
  • Aquarius: January 20-February 18
  • Pisces: February 19-March 20
  • Aries: March 21-April 19
  • Taurus: April 20-May 20
  • Gemini: May 21-June 20
  • Cancer: June 21-July 22
  • Leo: July 23-August 22
  • Virgo: August 23-September 22
  • Libra: September 23-October 22
  • Scorpio: October 23-November 21
  • Sagittarius: November 22-December 21

What are Star Fragments? Answered

Star Fragments are star-shaped objects that can be found when wishing on a shooting star. They’re used in various DIY Recipes, such as the Magic Wand. This, along with the many other variations (Bunny Day Wand, Bamboo Wand, etc.), lets you store outfits and change into them on the fly as costumes.

There’s a range of actual star-themed items as well, and you’ll need Star Fragments and Large Star Fragments for the space furniture set this time around. Though if you don’t like the furniture, I personally like using the star fragments as decorations themselves!

Finally is the Zodiac set Celeste gives you a recipe for every month. So far, we’ve got the Aries Rocking Chair and Taurus Bath. If you don’t want to wait to finish the set, there’s always an option to time travel.

Additional Star Fragment Tips

If you’re still struggling to find Star Fragments, it may be worth visiting a friend, where you can have the opportunity to find shooting stars together. I always ask fellow players if they have a shooting star night so I’m able to travel and catch as many as possible.

Your friends can always visit you too, as it increases the amount of stars you’ll be able to gain the following day. As star fragments are limited to 20 per person, if another player is wishing alongside you, you’ll have the opportunity to get even more.

And that’s all you need to know about how to get star fragments in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. For more, be sure to check out our comprehensive collection of Animal Crossing: New Horizons guides.
