How to Romance Characters in Palia

If you're excited to smooch some of the NPCs in Palia, here's how to romance, as well as befriend, them.

We now know how to romance characters in Palia. The cozy simulation MMO has yet to be released on PC, but new information from Singularity 6 sheds light on the game’s relationship system. Like other games in the genre, some of the NPCs are dateable, with specific storylines associated with wooing them.

How to Romance Characters in Palia

Here’s how to romance characters in Palia:

  • Reach Level 3 Friendship.
  • Give the person a Box of Chocolates or Heartdrop Lily.
  • Select the Romance dialogue option.
  • Start dating.
  • Complete Romance quests.
  • Obtain a Romance Pin at Level 3 Romance.

To romance characters in Palia, you must first become friends with them. Once you reach a certain level of friendship by giving gifts, you can unlock their romance option. But just because you start dating an NPC doesn’t mean you can’t start seeing someone else.

Since dating is just the beginning of things in Palia, you can have romantic conversations with any of the romanceable characters. Each has their own charming storyline, similar to their friendship storyline, filled with quests and activities to do.

Once you reach Romance Level 3, however, the person(s) you’re dating will give you a Romance Pin. Should you choose to wear it on your character, it signifies that you’re in a “serious relationship. You can have two of these Pins, meaning you can fully date up to two NPCs.

As the game is still in the early stages of development, nothing has been noted about marriage, moving in together, or raising a family. Those are sure to come with more developer streams.

How to Become Friends with Characters in Palia

Since a solid friendship is the foundation of any long-lasting romance, you’ll need to know how to become friends with the people of Palia. Here’s how:

  • Talk to characters every Palian day.
  • Give a gift every real life day.
  • Fulfill Weekly Wants.
  • Complete Friendship quests.

Each day that you talk to an NPC increases their Friendship Meter. A Palian day refreshes every hour, so you can talk to characters fairly often during a longer play session. In addition to talking to them, you’ll be able to give them a gift every day. This isn’t a Palian day, however, but a real life day, with the counter resetting at 9 p.m. PST. Even if you play for eight hours, you can only give each character one gift until it’s reset.

Just like other cozy simulation games, each character will have items they favor above the other. For example, Einar will accept any kind of fish, but loves Mottled Gobi. Giving these items grants a little more friendship than a normal item, but less than giving a Weekly Want.

Even if a character loves an item, they won’t accept the same thing more than once during a week. They’ll often state they have a stockpile of it, or flatly turn it down. This applies to Weekly Wants, as well, meaning you’ll have to think of different items to gift for the other three days a week.

Character Weekly Wants Explained

Weekly Wants are gifts given to characters to increase their Friendship Meter — but they’re very specific. Each NPC can have up to four wants, and you’ll need to speak to them or their friends to find out what they want that week. Fulfilling a Weekly Want moves the needle on your friendship more than an ordinary present, especially the last two items which are loved by the person.

In addition to talking to characters and giving them presents, completing their friendship or other related quests will earn you a boost. The type of quest, as well as the outcome, will determine how much is added to the friendship meter, but some gain will occur.

You can check your friendship and romance levels in your menu under the Heart tab. Characters with two bars are romanceable, with the top bar for friendship and the bottom for romance. When you click on an NPC, it will also show you a quick blurb about the character, any discovered Weekly Wants, and more details on your friendship.

That’s how to romance characters in Palia. For more on the game, like how to refer friends, check out our growing guides library.
